To read a QR code on a supported Samsung Galaxy phone, open Camera, point it at the code, then tap the notification that appears. You do not need to take a picture. If you want to review the detected code before opening it, use the Scan QR code tile in Quick Settings instead.
Scan a physical QR code with Camera
- Open the Camera app and use the photo viewfinder.
- Hold your phone so the whole QR code is visible in the frame. Wait for a notification or pop-up.
- Tap the notification and review the action offered, such as opening a website or connecting to Wi-Fi. Continue only if you trust the destination.
There is no need to take a photo first. The exact appearance of the notification and available actions can vary by phone, software version, and region. Samsung’s Canadian instructions apply to devices sold in Canada and note that screens and settings may differ elsewhere.
Use the dedicated Quick Settings scanner
- Open the Quick Settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen. Depending on your phone, you may need to swipe down again to see the full panel.
- Tap Scan QR code. If you do not see the tile, look for an option to reveal or edit the Quick Settings buttons; the controls vary by device and software version.
- Align the QR code in the scanner’s frame and wait for it to be detected.
- Review the notification or destination before choosing what to do. The scanner also provides quick access to a flashlight if the code is poorly lit.
Samsung Canada identifies this as a useful way to review a detected code before opening it. Samsung’s US support instructions also describe Camera and Quick Settings scanning.

Scan a QR code that is saved on your phone
- Save the QR code as an image in Gallery. If you cannot save it directly, take a screenshot showing the code.
- Open the image in Gallery and press and hold the QR code.
- Review the notification or action that appears, then choose whether to proceed.
This method may not work if the image is blurry, low-resolution, or partly covered. For setup-specific use, Samsung also documents scanning a QR code in Smart Switch when connecting a new Galaxy phone to an older one; that is a separate device-transfer flow, not the usual way to read a code.

If your Samsung camera will not scan the code
Try these checks in order. They can improve recognition, but cannot restore a QR code that is too damaged or obscured to read.
- Turn on QR scanning in Camera settings. Open Camera, open its settings, and look for Scan QR codes; switch it on if it is off. The settings icon and the control’s location differ across models and software versions. Samsung’s US support guide gives this setting as a check when Camera scanning fails.
- Show the full code clearly. Make sure it is sharp, undamaged, and not covered. If using Camera, tap the code on screen to help the phone focus.
- Adjust focus and distance. Move the phone slightly closer or farther away until the code comes into focus. If it is displayed on another phone or tablet, raising that screen’s brightness may help.
- Improve the lighting. Avoid shadows and reflections. If you are using Quick Settings, try its flashlight control.
- Clean the camera lens gently. Wipe fingerprints or dust with a soft, dry cloth.
- Separate scanning from loading. If the code is recognized but a website or online action does not load, check your internet connection.
- Restart the phone. If the code remains unrecognized after the other checks, restart your device and try again.
Check a QR code before opening it
A successful scan only shows that the phone read the code; it does not prove the destination is safe. Samsung advises: “Only scan QR codes from sources you trust.” Check the website address or other information shown before continuing, especially for an unexpected code sent through email, text, social media, or a messaging app.

Samsung Canada’s QR scanning guide was last updated July 2, 2026. Its steps are regional guidance, not an exhaustive compatibility list for every Galaxy model or market; use the labels available on your phone if its layout differs.
