There is no single free, official method established for downloading other people’s videos from YouTube, TikTok, and X. The platform-supported options differ: YouTube offers app-only offline viewing for some videos, TikTok lets viewers save videos when creators allow it, and X offers downloads to Premium subscribers for eligible posts. For videos you uploaded yourself, each service has a separate backup route.
First, decide what “save” means
Saving a video can mean bookmarking its link, downloading a portable video file, watching it offline inside an app, or exporting media from your own account. Those are different outcomes. The options below cover platform-provided offline playback, permitted downloads, and creator backups—not a way to bypass a creator’s settings or platform restrictions.
Save YouTube videos
For someone else’s video: offline playback in the YouTube app
YouTube Premium members can download certain videos for offline playback in select areas. These downloads are encrypted and can only be watched in the YouTube app; they are not portable MP4 files. Availability depends on the video and area. See YouTube’s offline-viewing help for the current details.

For your own uploads: download through Studio or Takeout
YouTube says, “You can’t download other users’ YouTube videos” through its creator-download route. For your own uploads, download an individual video in YouTube Studio or export all uploaded videos through Google Takeout. YouTube Help says the available MP4 is 720p or 360p depending on video size. An individual video can be downloaded up to five times per day; removal, certain strikes, pre-approved audio, or reaching that daily limit can prevent a download. Instructions are in YouTube Help on downloading your videos.

Save TikTok videos
For a video you’re watching: use the creator-enabled save option
- Open the TikTok video.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Save video if the option appears.
If Save video is missing, TikTok says the creator has not allowed downloads. Respect that setting rather than trying to work around it. The viewer steps and creator controls are described in the TikTok Help Center’s video-download guidance.
For your own video: save a copy before posting
On the Post screen, enable Save to device before publishing. While editing, you can also tap Save. TikTok says downloads are off by default for private accounts and accounts belonging to users under 16, and those users cannot turn the setting on. A copy already downloaded by someone else remains on that person’s device even if you later disable downloads, so choose your setting before posting; see TikTok’s download-settings help.

Download X videos
For an eligible post: Premium download
X says Premium subscribers can download videos from certain posts. Open the video, tap the three-dot menu, then tap Download video. The uploader can turn off Allow video to be downloaded while composing a post. X says this feature applies to eligible videos posted from July 25, 2023; videos posted earlier are not downloadable through it. Feature access and eligibility can change, so check X Help’s video-download instructions.
For your own posts: request an account archive
X’s archive can include your posts, direct messages, and attached media such as videos, images, and GIFs. Request it through your X account’s data/archive settings; X says preparation may take a few days. This is an export of your own account data, not a way to download another person’s post. Offline access and permission to repost, remix, monetize, or distribute are separate issues. YouTube’s terms limit downloading or using content to cases permitted by the service, authorized by the rights holder where applicable, or allowed by law. The linked YouTube terms are dated December 15, 2023, so consult the live terms for current wording. TikTok’s US terms limit use of TikTok content and address downloading or other exploitation without required consent; that is the US terms, not a universal statement for every jurisdiction. X says US fair use depends on the facts and is assessed case by case by courts using purpose and character, nature of the work, amount used, and market effect. X also says it cannot determine whether a particular use qualifies; see X’s fair-use guidance. Rights exceptions vary by jurisdiction and circumstances, so obtain permission where required.
Be cautious about account access
A service that asks you to connect a social account may receive permissions to read account information or act on your behalf, depending on the authorization. X advises reviewing a third-party app’s terms and privacy policy before granting access; see X’s guidance on third-party app access. That is a reason to inspect requested permissions and avoid granting credentials or broad access unnecessarily—not evidence that every downloader site is malicious.
