Recipe imports from Facebook and Instagram depend on where the instructions live: in a caption or comment, on a linked food blog, or inside a video’s narration or on-screen text. Use the recipe app’s documented social-sharing route rather than assuming its website importer accepts social links. Even a successful import may need a quick check for missing ingredients or steps.
First, find where the recipe is stored
Before importing, check the post itself. A social recipe may be written directly in the caption or a comment, linked to a food blog, or presented only in a Reel or video. These are different sources of information, and an app that can read a recipe webpage may not be able to extract instructions from a social video.
- Caption or comment: Look for the ingredient list and directions in the post text, including the first comment.
- Linked recipe page: Open the link and see whether it leads to a page containing the full recipe.
- Video: Check whether the instructions are spoken, shown as text, or both. Support for extracting recipe details from video varies by app.
Import an Instagram recipe with CookBook
CookBook’s help article, dated July 17, 2025, documents this workflow for Instagram. These are CookBook-specific instructions, not a universal Instagram import method. CookBook says it checks the caption first and follows a post link if the caption is empty; it says imports work best when the complete recipe is in the caption or first comment. - Open the Instagram post or Reel containing the recipe and tap Share.
- Choose Share to on iOS or Share on Android.
- Select CookBook from the available apps and follow its prompts to save the recipe.
Use CookBook’s copy-link fallback
If CookBook is not available in Instagram’s share options, copy the video URL, open CookBook, and paste the link on the app’s dashboard. This fallback is also documented by CookBook; whether it succeeds can depend on the post and what recipe details are accessible.

Import Facebook and Instagram posts with Our Meals
Our Meals documents a social-import route that starts inside the relevant social app: share the Facebook or Instagram recipe to Our Meals. Its ordinary website-and-blog paste workflow is for webpages, not the social-post route. Follow the app’s current in-app prompts after choosing it from the social app’s share options. Our Meals help.
What video-capable import claims mean
Snap and Simmer says it supports public Facebook posts and videos. The company says it checks captions and linked blogs and can process recipes that appear only in video by listening to spoken content and reading on-screen text. The App Store listing for Recipe Social says version 1.0.1 adds Facebook-link import and describes importing recipes from social links and screenshots. The listing gives an August 11 release date without a year, so the year cannot be inferred from that listing. Recipe Social on the App Store.

Why a social recipe import can be incomplete
Importers may be working from different material: caption text, a comment, a linked recipe webpage, or instructions embedded in video. App support differs. For example, Our Meals distinguishes sharing social posts from pasting websites, while CookBook recommends a complete caption or first comment and provides a copy-link fallback. Snap and Simmer describes video extraction, but that is a product claim rather than a guarantee.

The available product documentation does not establish a universal success rate or show that any importer works for every post, account, device, or privacy setting. If an import is incomplete, use this check in order:
- Read the caption and comments for recipe details that may not have been included.
- Open any recipe-site link in the post and use the recipe app’s website import route if its instructions support that.
- For a social post, use the app’s documented share workflow from Facebook or Instagram.
- If that route is unavailable, try the app’s copy-link fallback if it provides one.
- Review the saved ingredients and steps against the original post or linked recipe, then correct omissions or transcription errors.
Importing a recipe is not permission to repost it
Saving a recipe into a personal collection does not grant permission to republish the original photo, video, or recipe text. Meta says Instagram content must not violate another person’s intellectual-property rights, and finding content online or giving credit does not by itself resolve copyright concerns.
