To save a photo or video someone sent in Messenger, long-press the item in the conversation and choose the available save option. For media in a shared album, open the group chat, tap its name, select Media, and use the download control on the item. The exact controls and where a saved file appears can vary by device and app version.
Save a photo or video from a Messenger conversation
- Open the Messenger conversation containing the photo or video.
- Long-press the image or video. Meta described this action for received media in an announcement about end-to-end encrypted chats in January 2022: “You’ll be able to save a video or image by long-pressing on any media you receive.” Meta’s announcement describes the feature, but it is not a current, device-by-device walkthrough.
- Choose the save option shown in your app. If the menu or wording differs, check the controls in your current Messenger version; availability and labels may change by device, app version, or rollout.
Meta’s announcement establishes the long-press action, but does not specify a universal destination such as the phone’s camera roll. Check the photo or video locations available on your own device to find the saved file.
Download media from a Messenger shared album
- Open the group conversation that contains the shared album.
- Tap the group chat name, then tap Media.
- Open the shared album and use the download control for the photo or video you want.
Meta’s April 2024 Messenger feature announcement says participants can view, add, delete, and download pictures and videos in a shared album. The album route applies to media in that album; it is separate from saving an individual received item in the chat.
Use Meta’s account tools for a broader copy
If you want a broader copy of information associated with your Facebook account, Meta provides tools to download a copy of Facebook information and select categories and a date range. Meta also describes transferring copies of photos, videos, posts, or other information to another service. These are account-level download or transfer options, not a confirmed way to retrieve every Messenger attachment or a replacement for saving a particular item from its chat or album.
