First check how the photo appears in the message: as a file attachment, inside the message body, or as an image loaded from the internet. Attachments use Outlook’s download or save controls; inline pictures may have a separate “Save as Picture” option; blocked web images must be loaded from a sender you trust.
Identify what kind of photo is in the email
- Attachment: A file listed near the message header or subject, often marked with a paperclip. Use the attachment menu to download or save it.
- Inline image: A picture displayed within the message text. It may not appear as a separate file attachment.
- External image: A picture loaded from a website. Outlook may block it, leaving a banner or blank area where the image would appear. It is not a downloadable attachment.
These types need different steps. If you cannot find an attachment menu, check whether the picture is simply part of the message body or blocked external content.
Download an attachment in new Outlook or Outlook on the web
These instructions apply to new Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, and Outlook.com. Microsoft notes that features may roll out gradually, so labels can vary. Microsoft’s attachment instructions show the current download options.

- Choose Download to save one photo. For multiple files in the same message, choose Download all.
- Choose a destination folder if prompted, then select Save. Outlook may offer the last folder you used by default.
If you want the file in OneDrive rather than a local folder, choose Save to OneDrive where that option appears. In new Outlook for Windows, dragging an attachment to the desktop is also an option.

Save an attachment in classic Outlook for Windows
Classic Outlook uses Save As rather than the newer Download menu. Select the attachment in the reading pane or open the message, then use one of these routes:
- Open the Attachments tab and choose Save As.
- Right-click the attachment and choose Save As.
Choose where to save the file. Microsoft’s basic Outlook task instructions cover saving attachments individually or as a group. If the menus described above do not match your screen, you may be using classic Outlook rather than new Outlook.

Save a picture embedded in the message
On desktop, right-click the picture in the message body and choose Save as Picture. Enter a filename and select a destination. This saves the displayed image; it may not preserve a useful original filename or the sender’s original file format.

Save attachments on a phone
Android
Microsoft documents this attachment workflow in its accessibility guide: open the message, select the attachment, choose Save to device, and grant file access if prompted. The saved file should be available in Downloads in the Files app. This documented workflow does not establish that every standard app screen uses the same labels.
iPhone and other mobile screens
Mobile attachment controls can vary by app version, and the reviewed Microsoft instructions do not establish one identical save menu for every current iOS and Android screen. Open the message, select the attachment, and follow the available save or share controls; then check the location your device offers, such as Files, Downloads, or Photos.

When Outlook does not display the picture
If the message contains an external image, it may be blocked rather than missing. In classic Outlook for Windows, select Download Pictures in the information bar at the top of a trusted message. Microsoft explains that blocking can limit potentially harmful content, tracking pixels, and bandwidth use. A tracking pixel is not the same as a read receipt. See Microsoft’s guidance on automatic picture downloads.
In Outlook for iOS or Android, external images download automatically unless you or your administrator enabled Block external images. If images are blocked, tap the banner at the top of the email to display them. This loads linked content; it does not save an attachment file. Microsoft describes the mobile setting in its mobile external-image instructions.
Only load external images from a sender and message you trust. If the email contains a OneDrive link instead of an attached file, open the link and sign in or request access if needed. A shared link and a downloaded copy are different options, and organization access settings can affect whether you can open the file.

Keep attachment safety in mind
Outlook blocks some potentially unsafe attachment types, including certain executable and script files. Do not try to bypass a warning for a file you were not expecting. If an attachment seems suspicious, confirm with the sender through a separate, trusted channel. For a regular photo, use the message’s attachment controls rather than relying on a web image displayed in the email.
