Buying groceries in bulk saves money only when the larger quantity costs less for the food you actually use—and you can store and finish it before it spoils. Plan meals, compare unit prices and usable servings, then count preparation, storage, and waste before choosing the bigger pack.
Is buying groceries in bulk actually cheaper?
Sometimes. A lower shelf price per pound or ounce is not automatically a lower cost per meal: the package may include peel, bones, or liquid, take extra preparation, or contain more than your household can use. USDA Economic Research Service research finds that bulk buying can lower purchasing costs, but refrigeration, storage, and spoilage can eventually erase those savings. Its report examines institutional purchasing and earlier research, so it is a cost principle—not a forecast of what a particular household will save.
Use the price of the edible food you expect to eat as your test. If the larger package costs less after accounting for yield and likely waste, and you have a safe place to store it, bulk buying may make sense. If not, a smaller package—or another trip later—is the better value.

- Set the amount you will use. Plan meals and note how much of each ingredient you expect to use before the next shopping trip. Treat that amount as a ceiling for perishables, rather than buying extra just because a package is discounted.
- Compare the same units. Check the shelf-label unit price for both packages, such as price per ounce or pound. If it is missing or uses a different unit, convert package sizes to a common unit and divide each total price by that amount.
- Adjust for what is edible. For items sold in different forms, account for trimming, peel, bones, drained weight, or servings. A lower price per pound may not mean a lower cost per portion. The USDA Food Buying Guide explains yield-based comparisons and shows fresh, canned, and frozen green beans as a worked example. Its prices are illustrative, not current retail prices.
- Include the costs the shelf label leaves out. Consider preparation time, pantry or refrigerator space, and the chance that some food will go unused. USDA’s Food Buying Guide notes that labor and storage costs are outside its raw-food-price calculations.
- Choose the size that passes the test. Buy more when you have a clear use plan, the cost remains lower after these adjustments, and you can store it safely. Otherwise, buy a smaller amount and get more when you need it.
USDA MyPlate recommends planning meals around a budget, making a grocery list that includes staples and perishables, checking sales, and comparing unit prices. Its advice is straightforward: “Don’t overbuy foods that you will throw out later.” USDA MyPlate: Eat Healthy on a Budget.

What groceries are worth buying in bulk?
Start with foods your household already eats and that can be stored appropriately. USDA MyPlate identifies whole grains, canned or dried beans, and frozen vegetables as examples that may work well in larger quantities because they store well. That is category guidance, not a guarantee that every large package is cheaper or right for your pantry.
Fresh produce, meat, and other perishables can also be worthwhile in larger amounts if you have a plan to use or preserve them. Before buying, check the amount your recipes need, available storage space, and how long the food is likely to remain usable. A sale is not a saving if the excess ends up discarded.

Compare package forms and storage needs
When a recipe allows more than one form—such as fresh, canned, or frozen vegetables—compare the amount you will actually serve, not just the package sizes or price per pound. Account for edible yield and drained weight, as well as any extra preparation and the package’s fit with your recipe. The USDA Food Buying Guide’s green-bean example demonstrates this method; it is intended for Child Nutrition Programs, and its sample prices should not be treated as today’s consumer prices.
Storage can change the result. A large fresh package may require refrigerator space and quick use; frozen food needs freezer capacity; pantry staples need suitable dry storage. USDA ERS explains that storage, refrigeration, and spoilage costs can overtake bulk savings. The practical question is whether your household can store and use the amount—not whether the unit-price label looks attractive by itself.

Keep bulk purchases safe on the way home
For perishables, plan for refrigerator and freezer capacity before shopping. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service advises shoppers to separate raw meat, poultry, and seafood from other groceries, pick up cold foods near the end of the trip, and go straight home. It says to refrigerate perishables within two hours, or within one hour when the temperature is above 90°F (32.3°C). USDA FSIS: How do you shop for food for large groups? - Do I have meals or recipes that use this amount?
- Is the unit price lower for the same unit—and is the edible cost still lower after yield and preparation?
- Can I store the full amount safely, and will I use it before it spoils or loses quality?
- Would a smaller package, or a canned or frozen alternative, fit my needs better?
If you cannot answer yes to a clear use plan and safe storage, choose the smaller amount. USDA MyPlate’s budget guidance also points shoppers to Shop Simple with MyPlate for savings in their area.
