You can download an internet video to an iPhone as a file only when the site provides a downloadable video link. In Safari, touch and hold that link and choose Download Linked File; then find the result in Files > Browse > Downloads. If the video is available only as a stream, use the service’s official offline-viewing feature instead. That usually keeps the download inside the service’s app rather than saving a video file to Files or Photos.
Choose the download method that matches what you want

These methods do different things: a Safari download saves a linked file, while an app’s offline feature may cache a video for playback only within that app. Safari is not a universal tool for extracting files from embedded video players.
Download a video file from a website in Safari
This route works when the website offers a direct video-file link or its own download control. Apple documents downloading linked files; it does not say that Safari can turn every embedded stream into a file.

- Touch and hold the video link. If Safari offers Download Linked File, tap it. If that option is not offered, the page may not provide a downloadable link; a video playing on the page is not by itself evidence that Safari can save it.
- Check the download. Tap Safari’s Downloads button to view its status or open the downloaded item.
- Find the file in Files. Open Files, tap Browse, then tap Downloads to see internet downloads.
Expect the file in Files unless the site explicitly provides another destination. Apple’s guidance does not say a Safari download is automatically added to Photos.

Watch YouTube videos offline in the YouTube app
For a YouTube video offered only for streaming, use YouTube’s in-app Download option when it is available. Sign in to the YouTube app, open an eligible video, and choose Download. Find downloaded videos under the You tab. These are for offline playback in YouTube, not a general-purpose MP4 saved in Files.
Eligibility depends on the video and location. YouTube says Premium members can watch videos they previously downloaded in the app, and that certain videos can also be downloaded in select locations without that Premium route. Offline access is not permanent in every case: YouTube says some downloads need a reconnection check after up to 48 hours, while non-music content in some regions can remain available for up to 29 days. Treat those as examples of YouTube’s rules, not universal time limits; check the option and availability shown in your app and region.

Downloading your own YouTube upload is different
If you uploaded the video to YouTube, YouTube documents saving your own upload to an iPhone or iPad as an MP4 through the YouTube or YouTube Studio app. That creator-download feature does not provide MP4 downloads of other users’ videos; YouTube states, “You can’t download other user’s YouTube videos.” For another creator’s video, use the in-app offline option if YouTube makes it available to you.
Export a video already stored in iCloud Photos
If the video is already in your iCloud Photos library, you can export it to Files. This is an export of your own library, not a way to download an arbitrary video from a website.

- In Photos, select the items you want to export.
- Tap Share, then choose Export Unmodified Originals.
- Choose a destination in Files, including an external storage device if one is available, and tap Save.
Apple also describes downloading selected items from iCloud.com on iPhone or iPad. Available download choices include unmodified originals, highest resolution, or a more compatible format such as MP4/H.264. Follow Apple’s iCloud Photos download and export guidance for the available choices.

- The video is embedded in a webpage: Check whether the site offers its own download control or a link to the file. Safari’s documented Download Linked File action applies to a linked file, not every player.
- The video is on a streaming service: Look for that service’s official offline option. Availability may depend on your account, location, and the individual video, and playback may stay within the app.
- You expect to find it in Photos: Check Files > Browse > Downloads first. A Safari download is not necessarily saved to Photos.
Use downloads authorized by the site or service and follow its rules. Whether a particular copy is permitted can depend on the content, service terms, and applicable law.
