You can transfer DVR recordings to an external drive only if your DVR or provider supports an export method. Some devices copy selected recordings as files; others use an external drive only as DVR-controlled storage, while cloud services may let you download eligible recordings to a phone or tablet. Identify the provider, exact model, and recording location before buying a drive or disconnecting the DVR.

First determine what kind of recording you have

“External hard drive” can mean either a portable archive you can play elsewhere or extra storage that remains tied to the DVR. Those are different outcomes. A USB or eSATA port does not, by itself, mean the DVR can export computer-readable video files.

  • Local recording: The video is stored on the DVR. The device may support USB export, network transfer, or only DVR-formatted storage.
  • Cloud recording: The provider stores the video and may offer downloads through an app. Download eligibility and device limits apply, and an app download is not necessarily an exportable file for an external drive.
  • Security-camera recording: Some security DVRs provide a direct export workflow to USB storage. The steps and compatible file systems depend on the model.

Look up the provider and model number on the DVR’s label or in its settings, then consult that model’s manual or support page for the words “export,” “transfer,” “download,” or “external storage.”

Which transfer method fits your DVR?

Method What it does Important limitation
DVR-supported USB export Copies selected recordings to removable storage on a compatible security DVR. The DVR must explicitly support export; file and drive compatibility vary. The reviewed Swann manual specifies FAT32 or NTFS.
Network transfer to a computer Moves recordings over the home network from certain supported DVRs. The reviewed TiVo instructions apply to Premiere DVRs and note provider and digital-rights restrictions. They do not establish a general procedure for cable or satellite boxes.
Cloud DVR app download Downloads eligible completed recordings to a supported mobile device for offline viewing. Availability and download limits depend on the service. The documented Xfinity workflow is a device download, not a general external-drive file export.
DVR-formatted eSATA expansion Adds storage that a compatible DVR controls for recordings. It may not move recordings into portable files. Xfinity says its formatted drive cannot be used to watch recordings on a computer or another DVR.

How the documented options work

Xfinity legacy DVR: eSATA adds storage, not a portable archive

Xfinity documents eSATA external-drive support only for named legacy Motorola and Cisco/Scientific Atlanta DVR models. Its support page lists capacity of up to 2 TB for certain Motorola models and up to 1 TB for the listed Cisco/Scientific Atlanta models; these are model-specific limits, not general DVR standards. Xfinity says external hard drives are not available with Xfinity X1 TV Boxes. Check the exact model and eSATA port before obtaining a drive. Xfinity: DVR storage capacity on legacy TV Boxes.

For a compatible legacy box, Xfinity’s FAQ says to connect the drive to the DVR’s eSATA port and follow the on-screen formatting prompts. The DVR includes recordings stored on that drive in its ordinary recordings list and chooses where to record based on available space. This is expansion of DVR-controlled storage, not a general way to copy recordings to a computer. Once formatted by one DVR, the drive cannot be used to watch those recordings on a computer or another DVR; formatting it for another DVR erases its recordings. Xfinity: External hard drive for legacy DVR FAQs.

Xfinity cloud DVR: download eligible recordings in the app

Xfinity describes downloads of eligible completed cloud DVR recordings through the Xfinity Stream app on Apple or Android devices. The service requires cloud DVR and an active internet connection, and Xfinity warns that not all recordings are available. Its stated limits are up to five mobile devices (two on select packages) and up to 50 downloads per device. A download is checked out to a device and cannot be viewed on other devices until checked back in. This may enable offline viewing on that mobile device, but the instructions do not establish export to an external hard drive. Xfinity: Download cloud DVR recordings.

TiVo Premiere: network transfer is model- and rights-dependent

An older TiVo installation guide describes using TiVo Desktop to transfer recorded programs from Premiere DVRs to a PC over the home network. It also notes that some channels or titles may be unavailable because of cable-provider flags and digital-rights protections. Treat this as historical, model-specific guidance; it is not a universal current procedure for every TiVo or provider DVR. The same guide describes an eSATA expander as merged storage and warns that removing the installed drive causes data loss. TiVo Premiere installation guide.

Swann security DVR: export selected recordings to USB

The reviewed Swann DVR manual describes a direct export workflow: connect USB storage, search for recordings, select the recordings, and choose Export. For the DVR family covered by that manual, the USB drive or flash drive must use FAT32 or NTFS. Wait for the “Export finished” message before removing the storage device. This example does not mean a television-provider DVR supports USB export; verify the instructions for your own model. Swann DVR manual.

Protect recordings before replacing or returning a DVR

Check recording availability before exchanging equipment. Xfinity says recordings stored locally are lost when a legacy TV Box is exchanged. With X1, recordings unavailable in the cloud may be lost; recordings visible in the Stream app can be accessed on replacement X1 equipment. Before returning or disconnecting the original box, check which recordings appear in the app and ask the provider about retention for the rest. Practical checks before you start

  • Write down the DVR’s provider, exact model, and whether the recording is local or cloud-based.
  • Confirm the intended result: extra recording capacity, offline viewing on a mobile device, or portable files playable on another device.
  • Verify the supported port, drive format, and capacity in documentation for that exact model. Do not assume that a USB port supports recording export.
  • For a drive already formatted by a DVR, check whether disconnecting or reformatting it will make recordings inaccessible or erase them.
  • If the recording is protected or unavailable for transfer, use only the provider’s supported viewing or download options.
