Saving a WebP image and converting it to JPG are different things. A website’s download or save command may give you the format it serves. To get a real JPEG, download the image, open it in an editor that supports WebP, and export a separate copy as JPEG or JPG. Renaming .webp to .jpg does not convert the image.
Why an image saves as WebP instead of JPG
A website can deliver an image as WebP, and your browser may save that same file when you choose its save or download command. That command does not necessarily convert the image to the format you prefer. If the site offers a separate JPEG download or an original-file option, use it; otherwise, download the WebP and convert it in an image editor.
WebP is not simply an inferior version of JPEG. Google describes it as supporting both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Google’s format overview reports that lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent quality, and lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs. Those are Google-published format comparisons, not a guarantee about the size or appearance of your particular image. Google’s WebP overview explains the format and comparisons.
Modern browsers support WebP, but an older app, upload form, or workflow may still require JPEG. Google’s FAQ lists historical browser milestones—including Chrome desktop 17+, Edge 18+, Firefox 65+, and Safari 14+—rather than a complete guarantee for every browser and operating-system combination today. Check the requirement of the app or site you are using instead of assuming one format is always better. Google’s WebP FAQ has the compatibility background.

Convert a downloaded WebP to JPG
- Download the image. Use the website’s download option or your browser’s save-image command. Keep the original WebP until you have checked the JPEG copy.
- Open the WebP in an image editor. Choose an editor that supports opening WebP files. If the editor reports that it cannot read the file, use a compatible editor rather than changing the filename extension.
- Export or save a copy as JPEG. In the editor, choose its export or Save As function and select JPEG or JPG as the output format. Menu names and locations differ by app and version.
- Choose an appropriate quality setting, if offered. JPEG is lossy, so a new JPEG export can reduce image quality. Higher quality usually means a larger file; the best setting depends on whether you prioritize file size or visual detail.
- Open the exported file and check it. Confirm that it displays correctly and that the destination app accepts it. Do not rely on the filename ending alone to establish the file format.
Converting a lossy WebP to JPEG can introduce another lossy encode. It cannot restore detail that was already discarded when the source was compressed. If image quality matters, keep the original and avoid repeatedly converting the same image between lossy formats.
Windows: use Paint if your version supports the workflow
A Microsoft Q&A community answer suggests opening the WebP in Paint and choosing Save As > JPEG. This is community guidance, not a current Microsoft support guarantee, and the available formats or menu wording can depend on your installed Paint version. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.
- Open Paint and open the downloaded WebP file.
- Choose Save As and look for JPEG or JPG among the available formats.
- Save to a new filename, then open the saved copy and verify it.
If Paint will not open the file or does not offer JPEG, do not rename the file as a workaround. Use another WebP-capable image editor and export a JPEG copy. The exact steps vary by installed app version.

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe says Photoshop has native WebP support beginning with version 23.2: it can open, create, edit, and save WebP images without a plug-in. To make a JPEG, open the WebP and use Photoshop’s export or save workflow to select JPEG as the output format. The exact menu sequence depends on the Photoshop version and workflow; Adobe’s support page establishes WebP support but does not verify a particular JPEG-export sequence. Adobe’s WebP support article was last updated August 13, 2024.
macOS and mobile devices
The built-in steps for macOS, iPhone, and Android depend on the operating-system version and the app handling the image. Use an app that explicitly opens WebP and offers JPEG or JPG as an export format. If the app only shares or saves the original, that is not a conversion. Check the exported copy in the destination app before deleting the WebP.
Choose JPEG only if it preserves what you need
| What matters | Choose or keep | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility with a form that specifically requires JPG/JPEG | JPEG export | The site’s stated upload requirement takes precedence; verify the exported file is accepted. |
| Transparent areas | Keep WebP or export PNG | WebP and PNG can support transparency; JPEG cannot preserve it. Transparent areas may be flattened against a background when converted to JPEG. |
| Animation or all frames | Keep the original animated WebP or choose another animation-capable format | JPEG is a still-image format and cannot preserve an animation’s frames. |
| Small file size at comparable visual quality | Compare the original and export | Google’s published WebP comparisons report smaller WebP files in its stated format contexts, but they do not predict the outcome for an individual image. |
Before converting, check whether the image uses transparency or animation. If it does, JPEG may technically satisfy an upload requirement while changing the image in a way you do not want. Keep the original as a backup.

Online converters and browser extensions
An online converter can be convenient when you cannot install an editor or are working across devices. However, it requires uploading the image to a third party. If the image is private, confidential, or sensitive, prefer a local editor unless you have checked the converter’s privacy and handling terms. No particular converter is recommended here.

If your goal is to capture a webpage as an image rather than convert an existing WebP file, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not convert a downloaded WebP into JPEG; use an image editor for that. For a webpage capture, its API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. The following is the supplied one-call cURL example, saving a WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo.

Troubleshooting a JPG conversion
The file is still named .webp
The editor may have saved or copied the original instead of exporting it. Reopen the file, use the export or Save As workflow, explicitly select JPEG/JPG, and save a new copy. Changing the suffix in the filename does not change the encoding.
The editor cannot open the image
That editor or its installed version may not support WebP. Try another editor that explicitly supports WebP. Photoshop’s native support begins with version 23.2, according to Adobe. Do not infer that every older version or every application can read the format.

The converted image has a solid background
JPEG does not preserve transparency. If transparent pixels matter, keep the WebP or export as PNG instead. If the upload destination insists on JPEG, check its requirements and decide whether a flattened background is acceptable.
The image looks worse or the file is larger
JPEG export settings affect both size and quality, and conversion may encode an already-lossy source again. Try a higher JPEG quality setting if visual detail matters, or keep the original WebP when the destination accepts it. The size and appearance depend on the image and chosen settings.
The upload form still rejects the file
Open the exported copy to confirm it is a JPEG, then check the form’s file-type and size limits. A filename ending in .jpg is not proof of the underlying format, and a valid JPEG can still fail a separate size or upload rule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing .webp to .jpg convert an image?
No. The image must be encoded again through an editor or conversion tool that exports JPEG.
Will converting WebP to JPG keep transparency or animation?
No. JPEG does not preserve transparency or animation; keep the WebP or choose a format that supports the feature you need.
Can I force a website to download its image as JPG?
Not reliably through the browser’s save command. Use a JPEG download if the site provides one; otherwise convert the downloaded image.
