Short answer: right-click the image and choose your browser’s save or download command. Then inspect the saved file. If it is already .jpg or .jpeg, you are finished. If it is .webp, .png, or another format, open it in an image editor or converter and export a JPEG copy. Renaming .webp to .jpg changes only the label, not the image data.
Save the image from the webpage
- Open the page containing the image and wait for it to finish loading.
- On a computer, right-click the image. On a phone or tablet, press and hold it. The exact menu wording differs by browser, operating system, and site.
- Choose Save image as, Save image, Download image, or the closest available command. Chrome documents image downloading as a normal browser action, but labels can change.
- Select a folder, enter a useful filename, and save it. Keep the original extension unless you are deliberately exporting a converted copy.
If the menu has no save-image command, the page may be using a background image, an overlay, a viewer, or a protected interface. Try opening the image in a new tab first, or use the page’s own download button. Do not assume that an image visible on screen is available as a separate, original file.
Check whether the download is really JPEG
Look at the filename in your Downloads folder. JPEG files commonly use .jpg or .jpeg. The extension is a useful first check, but it can be misleading if a file was renamed manually.
Windows
- In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions so the complete name is visible.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and check Type of file and the file size.
- Open it in Photos or another viewer. If the viewer identifies it as WebP or PNG, it still needs conversion.
macOS
- In Finder, select the file and press Command-I to open Get Info.
- Check Kind and Name & Extension. Preview can open many formats; its export dialog identifies the output format.
Linux
Use your file manager’s properties dialog or an image viewer that displays the decoded format. If you use a terminal, the file command can identify many image types:

file downloaded-imageDo not rely solely on how the image looks in the browser. Modern browsers support WebP, so an image that appears ordinary may download as WebP rather than JPEG.
Convert WebP or PNG to JPG
Saving and converting are separate operations. First preserve the downloaded original; then create a JPEG copy. This lets you return to the source file if you need transparency, maximum detail, or a different output later.
Using an image editor
- Open the downloaded image in an editor such as Preview, Paint, GIMP, Photoshop, or another application that supports both the source format and JPEG export.
- Choose File > Export, Export As, or Save As. Do not overwrite the original unless you have a backup.
- Select JPEG or JPG as the format.
- Choose a quality setting. Higher quality usually creates a larger file; lower quality creates a smaller file with more visible compression.
- Give the result a new name, such as
image-converted.jpg, and save it.
JPEG does not preserve transparency. If the source PNG has a transparent background, the editor may ask you to choose a background color or may place the image over a default background. Keep the PNG when transparency matters.

Open the image in Paint, select File > Save as > JPEG picture, choose a new filename, and save. Paint may flatten transparency against a background.
macOS Preview
Open the image in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider if needed, and click Save.

GIMP
Open the file, choose File > Export As, use a filename ending in .jpg, confirm JPEG as the format, set quality, and export. If the source has transparency, flatten or choose a background before exporting.
Why a webpage image downloads as WebP
WebP is a web image format supported by current major browsers. A site may deliver WebP even when the page design gives no visible indication of the format. The browser’s save command generally saves the resource it received; it does not promise to re-encode that resource as JPEG.
Sites may also serve different versions according to browser, screen density, viewport size, or image optimization rules. The downloaded file might therefore differ from an image you previously saved from the same page. Check every download when a specific format is required.
When “Save image as” is missing
The image is a CSS background
A right-click may select the page rather than the visual. Look for a built-in download control, open developer tools only if you are comfortable doing so, or ask the site owner for the original asset. Background images can also be intentionally assembled from several resources.
A viewer or overlay is intercepting the click
Close the lightbox, open the image in a new tab, or use the viewer’s download button. A thumbnail may link to a larger file, so saving the thumbnail can produce a lower-resolution result.

The site blocks downloads
Respect access controls, copyright, terms, and privacy expectations. Do not try to bypass authentication, bot checks, or technical restrictions. If you own the page, provide an explicit download link or use the original asset from your content system.
The file has an unfamiliar extension
Inspect it with an image viewer or a file-identification utility. Never “fix” it by guessing an extension; decode it first and export to JPEG.
Browser extensions: optional, not required
An extension such as Save Image As Type – PNG JPG WebP may add JPG, PNG, or WebP choices to an image context menu. Treat an extension as optional software: check its current publisher, permissions, update history, and availability in your browser’s official store. A store listing describes a feature, but it is not independent testing or proof that the extension is safe for every environment.
The normal browser-save-then-convert workflow avoids installing anything and makes the original file available for verification. An extension is useful only when you repeatedly need a format choice at download time.
Quality, size, and metadata considerations
- JPEG is lossy. Exporting can discard detail, and repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG can compound artifacts.
- Use the source format for editing. Keep WebP or PNG as the master when you need transparency, sharp text, or later edits.
- Choose dimensions before quality. Resizing a very large image can reduce file size more effectively than aggressive JPEG compression.
- Metadata may change. Export tools can remove or rewrite color profiles, timestamps, and other metadata. Check the editor’s options if those details matter.
- Animated images need special care. A JPEG stores one still frame. Converting an animated WebP or GIF requires selecting a frame or using an animation-capable tool.

The file says JPG but will not open
The extension may have been changed without conversion, or the download may be incomplete. Re-download it, inspect the actual type, and export a valid JPEG from an editor.

The converted image has a black or white background
The source likely used transparency, which JPEG cannot store. Choose the intended background color and export again, while retaining the transparent original.
The image is blurry
You may have saved a thumbnail or a resized display image. Open the image in a new tab, use the site’s download control, or obtain the original authorized asset. JPEG conversion cannot restore detail that was never downloaded.

The output is too large
Resize to the required pixel dimensions, then lower JPEG quality gradually while checking text and edges. Keep the original so you can try another setting.
The download is a PDF or an HTML file
You likely saved the page or a viewer response rather than the image resource. Return to the image itself and use its download control. A PDF is not converted to JPG by changing its extension; render the required page with a PDF-capable application first.

Is JPG different from JPEG?
No. JPG and JPEG are commonly used filename extensions for the same JPEG image format.
Can I convert an image by renaming .webp to .jpg?
No. Renaming changes the filename only. Open the image and export it as JPEG so the encoded data matches the extension.
Will converting PNG to JPEG keep transparency?
No. JPEG has no transparency channel. Choose a background and keep the PNG if transparency is needed.
