The short answer: take the screenshot with your computer’s built-in tool, then use its Save or Save As command and choose PNG when a file-type option appears. Windows screenshots can be saved from Snipping Tool or Paint, Mac screenshots use the Screenshot controls (with PNG selected through the SDR option on supported macOS Tahoe 26 and later), and Chromebook captures normally land in Downloads as PNG images.
What PNG means for screenshots
PNG is a lossless image format. It preserves sharp text, interface edges, and transparent areas better than a heavily compressed format such as JPEG. PNG files can be larger, but they are usually the safest choice for software instructions, UI bugs, diagrams, and screenshots that contain small text.
Your operating system may save screenshots automatically without showing a format menu. In that case, check the file extension after capture. If the image is on the clipboard instead of in a folder, paste it into an image editor and use Save As with PNG selected.

Save a screenshot as PNG in Windows 11 or Windows 10
Use Snipping Tool with Windows+Shift+S
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture bar appears.
- Choose a mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- Select the area, window, or screen you want to capture.
- Open the notification that says the snip was saved to the clipboard or is ready in Snipping Tool. The image opens in the Snipping Tool window, where Microsoft says you can make changes, save, and share it.
- Click the Save (floppy-disk) button, or open the Save As command.
- Choose a folder and filename. If a file-type menu is displayed, select PNG (often shown as “PNG image” or “.png”), then click Save.
Snipping Tool supports region, window, and full-screen captures. The keyboard shortcut starts the capture workflow; it does not necessarily write a file immediately, so complete the save step before closing the editor.

Use the Print Screen key and Paint
- Press Print Screen (sometimes labeled PrtSc) to copy the screen to the clipboard. On some keyboards, use Fn+Print Screen.
- Open Paint from the Start menu.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot.
- Choose File > Save as > PNG picture.
- Enter a filename, choose a folder, and click Save.
This method is useful when a screenshot exists only in the clipboard. Paint’s PNG command supplies an explicit format choice even when the original capture shortcut did not.
Check that Windows created a PNG
In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions if extensions are hidden. A PNG ends in .png. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and confirm that the file type is a PNG image. Renaming a file from another format to “.png” does not convert it; use Save As or an image editor instead.
Save a screenshot as PNG on a Mac
Capture the whole screen, a selection, or a window
- Press Shift-Command-3 for the entire screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then drag, for a selected area. Press the Space bar after the shortcut if you want to select a window.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls. Choose the screen, window, or selection capture, then use Options to choose a destination.
macOS normally saves screenshots to the Desktop. In the Screenshot controls, open Options and select another destination such as Documents, Downloads, or a folder you choose.

On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the Screenshot app offers SDR (Most Compatible) and HDR image-format choices. Select SDR (Most Compatible) to capture in standard dynamic range using PNG. HDR captures use HEIF instead, so do not select HDR when a PNG file is required.

- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Open Options and locate the format controls.
- Select SDR (Most Compatible).
- Capture the screen and check the saved file’s extension in Finder.
On macOS versions without this format control, the shortcut normally produces a PNG screenshot. If an application has exported the image in another format, open it in Preview and choose File > Export, then set Format: PNG.
Verify the Mac file
In Finder, select the screenshot and press Command-I. The information panel shows the file name and kind. A PNG normally has a .png extension. If extensions are hidden, enable Finder > Settings > Advanced > Show all filename extensions.

Capture the screen
- Press the Chromebook’s dedicated Screenshot key if your keyboard has one.
- If there is no Screenshot key, press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle beside two vertical lines.
- On an external keyboard without Show windows, Google documents Ctrl+Shift+F5.
- Choose full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture.
- Complete the selection. The image is saved automatically.
Chromebook screenshots are saved to the Downloads folder by default. Open the Files app, select Downloads, and look for the new image. Chromebook capture settings can be used to select another folder.

Confirm or convert the format
Right-click the image in Files and choose Rename only to inspect the extension; changing the letters at the end does not convert the image. If the file is not PNG, open it in an editor that offers Export or Save as, choose PNG, and save a new copy. ChromeOS versions and managed school or work devices can expose slightly different capture controls, but the Downloads location remains the default documented location.

When the screenshot is only on the clipboard
A keyboard shortcut may copy pixels without creating a file. Use this recovery path:
- Open an image editor: Paint on Windows, Preview on macOS, or an installed editor on ChromeOS.
- Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Chromebook, or Command+V on Mac.
- Choose Save As or Export.
- Select PNG, specify the destination, and save.
If the editor’s file menu has both “Save” and “Export,” use Export when you need to change the format. Keep the original until you have opened the PNG and checked its dimensions and readability.

Quality, privacy, and file-size checks
- Keep text readable: capture at the display’s native scale instead of zooming a tiny crop after the fact.
- Crop sensitive data: remove passwords, private messages, access tokens, addresses, and customer information before sharing.
- Use descriptive names: include the product, screen, and date, such as checkout-error-2026-09-29.png.
- Expect larger files: full-screen PNGs with high-resolution or retina displays can be several megabytes. Crop unnecessary areas before attaching them to a ticket.
- Do not fake conversion by renaming: a JPEG renamed to .png is still JPEG data and may fail to open or confuse an upload validator.
Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing
Check whether another application or keyboard utility has taken the shortcut. On laptops, try the Fn key with Print Screen. On Chromebooks, use the dedicated Screenshot key or the documented alternate shortcut for your keyboard.

Windows may still have the image in the clipboard or Snipping Tool window; paste it into Paint and save. On Mac, check the Desktop and the destination shown under Screenshot > Options. On Chromebook, check Downloads in the Files app.

The file is HEIF, JPEG, or another format
Use Save As or Export and explicitly choose PNG. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, change HDR to SDR (Most Compatible) before taking the capture. Do not merely edit the extension.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Repeat the capture after the page or application finishes drawing. For a scrolling webpage, a desktop shortcut captures only what is visible; use the application’s full-page export or a browser-based capture tool when you need content below the viewport.
The PNG is too large to upload
Crop it, reduce its dimensions in an image editor, or use a service that supports image resizing. Preserve the original PNG if you may need the pixels later.

FAQ
Can I save a screenshot as PNG without installing software?
Yes. Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, and Chromebook’s built-in capture controls can all create or save screenshots without a separate screenshot application.
Does changing .jpg to .png convert the image?
No. Use an editor’s Save As or Export command so the pixel data is actually encoded as PNG.
Where is my Chromebook screenshot?
Open the Files app and check Downloads first. That is the default Chromebook screenshot location.
