To save a screenshot as a JPG, capture the screen first, then use your device’s Save As or Export command and choose JPEG/JPG. Windows’ Snipping Tool can often save directly as JPEG. macOS normally captures PNG, so open the image in Preview and export it as JPEG. iPhone screenshots are stored in Photos and need an exporter that supports JPEG when a JPG file is required. JPG and JPEG are the same practical format.
JPG and JPEG mean the same thing
JPG and JPEG are two filename extensions for the same image format. A save dialog may show either label, and choosing either produces a JPEG image. The format uses lossy compression, so a JPG is usually smaller than a PNG but may soften tiny text or introduce artifacts around sharp edges.
Taking a screenshot and choosing its file format are separate steps on many devices. Your operating system may capture to PNG, the clipboard, Photos, or a temporary editor before you choose JPEG during export.

Use Snipping Tool
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool. You can also press Print Screen for a full-screen capture.
- Choose a capture mode: rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
- Drag over the area you want, or select the window or full screen. Windows copies the capture and normally shows a notification.
- Open the notification to edit the snip in Snipping Tool. Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window, where you can make changes, save, and share it.
- Select Save as Image or Save As.
- In the file-type or format menu, choose JPEG or JPG, enter a filename, select a folder, and click Save.
If the editor offers an image-quality control, use higher quality for small text, diagrams, or UI screenshots. Use lower quality only when reducing file size matters more than preserving detail.

If Print Screen only copied the image
On some Windows configurations, Print Screen places the screenshot on the clipboard instead of opening a save window. Open Paint or another image editor, press Ctrl + V, then choose File > Save as and select JPEG picture. Enter a name and save it. If Paint warns that JPEG does not support a feature such as transparency, accept the conversion; JPEG has no transparent background.
Check the result
Open the saved file in Photos or File Explorer. In File Explorer, enable View > Show > File name extensions if you want to verify that the filename ends in .jpg or .jpeg. Renaming .png to .jpg does not convert the image; it only changes the label, so use Save As or Export instead.

Capture the screen
- Open the macOS Screenshot app with Shift + Command + 5. Choose full screen, a window, or a selected portion, then capture it.
- Alternatively, use Preview’s File > Take Screenshot commands for a full screen, window, or selection capture.
- Locate the resulting image and open it in Preview.
macOS commonly creates screenshots as PNG. Apple identifies PNG as the SDR/Most Compatible capture format, which is why an export step is normally required when a JPG is requested.

- In Preview, choose File > Export.
- Open the Format menu and select JPEG.
- Adjust the quality slider if it is shown. Higher quality preserves detail and creates a larger file.
- Enter a new name and choose a destination. Click Save.
Apple’s Preview instructions use this same workflow: open the file, choose File > Export, select JPEG from the Format menu, and save. Keep the PNG if you may need a lossless original; export a separate JPG for uploading or sharing.

When JPEG is unavailable in Preview
Make sure you are using Export, not Save. Preview’s Save command may preserve the existing PNG format, while Export exposes the format selector. If the file is already open in another application, reopen it in Preview and try File > Export again.
Save an iPhone screenshot as JPG
Capture and find the screenshot
- On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume up button together.
- On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Tap the thumbnail to crop, draw, or add markup, then save or dismiss the editor.
- Open Photos > Albums (or Media Types) and select Screenshots.
The screenshot remains in Photos before conversion. If you only need to send the image inside an Apple app, sharing may be sufficient. If a website specifically requires a .jpg or .jpeg file, use an exporter that supports JPEG. Apple’s Preview guide documents exporting to JPEG on supported iPhone software: open the image, choose Export, select JPEG, and choose a location.
Preserve the original
Export a copy rather than replacing the screenshot. The original may retain more editing flexibility, while the JPEG is the compatible copy you upload. Check the exported filename and open it in Photos or Files before attaching it to a form.

Why your screenshot is PNG instead of JPG
- The capture tool’s default is PNG. macOS commonly saves screenshots as PNG, so convert it in Preview.
- You changed the extension instead of the format. Renaming a .png file does not create a JPEG. Use Export or Save As.
- You used Save instead of Export. In Preview, Export is the command that exposes JPEG.
- The image is still on the clipboard. Paste it into Paint or an editor, then save as JPEG.
- The destination rejects the file. Confirm that the saved file actually ends in .jpg or .jpeg and is not a PNG with a renamed extension.
JPG quality, size, and compatibility
JPEG is useful when a form, CMS, or image service specifically requests JPG, or when a smaller file is preferable. It is less suitable for repeated editing, transparent graphics, or screenshots containing very fine text. JPEG has no transparency; transparent pixels become a solid background during conversion.

For a crisp interface screenshot, capture at the device’s native resolution, avoid repeatedly opening and resaving the JPG, and choose a high quality setting. If text looks fuzzy, export again from the original PNG rather than from an already compressed JPG.

Troubleshooting checklist
The save dialog has no JPEG option
Use the application’s export command, not a basic save command. In Preview choose File > Export; in Windows paste the image into Paint and choose Save As > JPEG picture.
The file is still too large
Reduce dimensions before exporting or choose a lower JPEG quality. Keep the original PNG so you can create another copy if the reduced version becomes unreadable.
Text or icons look blurry
Start from the original capture, export at higher quality, and avoid repeated JPEG conversions. For very small text, PNG may be technically clearer if the receiving service accepts it.
The upload says the file type is wrong
Check the actual extension and file information. A filename ending in .jpg is not enough if the content is PNG. Re-export through Snipping Tool, Paint, Preview, or a JPEG-capable exporter.

The iPhone image cannot be found
Look in Photos > Media Types > Screenshots, then check the Files location selected by the exporter. The screenshot may still be in Photos even after you export a separate JPEG.
