The most reliable way to save a pass is to open it in the issuer’s app or website and choose Add to Google Wallet. If that button is unavailable but the pass contains a barcode or QR code, Google Wallet can create a pass from a clear photo. After saving, open Wallet and swipe up to see your non-payment passes, or use View more and search for the business or another identifying word.
Menus and supported pass types vary by issuer, country, region, account and phone. The steps below cover the supported options and what to do when a pass does not appear.
Choose the right way to add the pass
Google Wallet has three practical ways to save a pass. Use the issuer’s own Wallet button whenever it is available. Use the photo method for an eligible barcode or QR pass when the issuer does not provide a button. Gmail auto-save is optional and works only for eligible items when the required settings are enabled.

A pass saved by one method may not have the same behavior as a pass issued directly for Wallet. In particular, an image-based pass is primarily a convenient way to display its barcode or QR code. It may not receive the issuer’s later changes in the same way as a pass added through the provider.

Save a pass from the provider’s app or website
Start with the ticket, boarding pass, loyalty pass, event pass or other item in the organization’s official app or website. The exact wording and identity checks depend on the provider.
- Open the pass. Sign in to the provider if required, then display the specific ticket or pass you want to keep.
- Choose Add to Google Wallet. The control may be near the barcode, in a menu, or alongside other digital-wallet options.
- Tap Add to Wallet if Google shows a second prompt. This confirms that the item should be stored in Wallet.
- Complete any requested verification. The provider or Google may ask you to confirm your identity or account before adding the item.
- Select the relevant Wallet if you are asked. This can matter when more than one Google account or Wallet context is available on the phone.
- Accept the terms. Finish the on-screen confirmation. The pass should then be available in Google Wallet.
The button is not universal. An issuer can support Wallet for one type of pass and omit it for another, or make the feature available only in certain countries or regions. If you cannot find the control, do not assume the phone is malfunctioning; first check whether the provider offers another delivery method or whether the pass contains a scannable code that can be saved as a photo pass.
What to check when the button is missing
- Open the pass in the provider’s current app or website rather than an old downloaded copy.
- Look around the pass details, sharing menu and options menu for Add to Google Wallet.
- Check whether the item is actually a supported pass. Wallet does not accept every document, ticket or identification item.
- If a barcode or QR code is visible, use the photo workflow described below.
- Ask the issuer whether its scanner accepts a Wallet-displayed code and whether it has a supported Wallet integration.
Save a barcode or QR pass from a photo
Google Wallet can create a pass from an image that contains a barcode or QR code, even when the issuer does not show an Add to Google Wallet option. Google’s Wallet Help describes this capability as follows: “If your pass has a barcode or QR code, you can save it to Google Wallet even if it doesn’t have the ‘Add to Google Wallet’ option.”
This method is useful for a screenshot, a downloaded ticket image or a photograph of a printed pass. The image must be clear enough for Wallet to recognize the code.

- Open Google Wallet. Launch the Wallet app on your phone.
- Tap Add to Google Wallet. This opens the available ways to add an item.
- Choose Photo. Select the image containing the barcode or QR code.
- Review the image. Use a sharp, uncropped image in which the entire code is visible. Glare, blur, folds or missing edges can prevent recognition.
- Add a name and description. Use a label you will recognize later, such as the provider and event name, route, appointment or expiration date.
- Tap Add. Wallet creates the pass and stores it with your other items.
When you need the pass, open the saved item and present its barcode or QR code to the reader. The reader’s acceptance is controlled by the issuer and its scanning equipment, not by Wallet alone. If the code is refused, use the provider’s original app, website or printed document and contact the issuer if necessary.
Understand the trade-off with an image-based pass
A photo pass preserves the code you had when you saved it. It does not necessarily maintain the issuer’s live information, account linkage, balance, seat change or other updates. Google’s management guidance warns that converted or downloaded items can have limited functionality or miss updates. For a pass that changes frequently, the provider’s direct Wallet option is preferable when available.
Find a saved pass later
Wallet places passes and other non-payment items in the app rather than requiring you to reopen the provider’s email or website.

- Open Google Wallet.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. This reveals non-payment cards, passes and IDs saved in Wallet.
- Tap the pass you need. Open it to view its details and display its barcode or QR code when required.

- Open Wallet and swipe up.
- Tap View more.
- Tap the search bar.
- Enter the business name or another identifying keyword, such as an event, airline, venue or organization.
- Open the matching pass from the results.
Archived passes can appear at the bottom of search results. If an item is not visible in the main list, search by the provider name and inspect the lower results before concluding that it was deleted.
Make future searches easier
- Use a distinctive name and description when creating a photo pass.
- Search for the business or organization that issued the item, not only the event title.
- Keep the provider’s original confirmation available until you have verified that the Wallet copy opens and scans.
- For time-sensitive travel or event passes, open the item before leaving so you know which version Wallet displays.
Optionally let Gmail save eligible passes automatically
Gmail can save eligible passes and receipts to Wallet, but the feature depends on settings in both services. It does not import every message or attachment.
Enable the required Gmail setting
- Open Gmail for the Google account that receives the pass.
- Enable Smart features in other Google products for that account. This permission allows eligible Gmail content to work with related Google features.
Turn on Wallet’s auto-save setting
- Open Google Wallet.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Manage passes from Gmail.
- Turn on Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail.
The same Wallet settings area lets you view passes that Gmail has saved. Auto-save affects future eligible items; it does not guarantee that every existing message will become a pass. If you turn the setting off, Wallet stops saving new eligible items automatically.

Wallet availability and transfer behavior vary by country, region, pass type and device. Some passes are connected to your Google Account and can appear after you sign in on another supported device. Other pass types are tied to the original device or need a separate supported transfer process. In those cases, you may have to transfer the item through Wallet or add it again from the issuer.

Before replacing or resetting a phone
A device reset deletes Wallet data stored on that device. Do not rely on the reset itself to preserve passes. Before wiping the phone:
- Sign in to the same Google Account on the replacement device when account-connected restoration is supported.
- Check whether the pass type offers a transfer option.
- Keep the provider’s email, app access or website link so you can add the pass again.
- Retain the original barcode image if you used the photo method.
- Verify that important passes open on the new phone before discarding the old device.
These precautions matter especially for tickets or IDs that are valid for a limited time. A pass that is not restored automatically may still be recoverable through its issuer, but the issuer controls reissue and account-recovery rules.

The issuer offers no Wallet button
First confirm that you are viewing the current pass in the official provider app or website. If the control is still absent, the issuer may not support direct Wallet addition for that item. For a barcode or QR code, use Add to Google Wallet → Photo. The result is a displayable Wallet pass, but the issuer must accept the displayed code and may not provide live updates for an image-based item.

Google says an error can indicate a problem with the pass and advises contacting the pass issuer. Save a screenshot or note the exact message, then ask the provider to verify the ticket, account, barcode and eligibility. Repeatedly retrying the same invalid or expired item is unlikely to correct an issuer-side problem.

The photo is rejected or the code cannot be read
- Use the original, highest-resolution image available.
- Include the complete barcode or QR code and its quiet space around the edges.
- Retake a photo without glare, shadows or folds.
- Do not crop away nearby information until Wallet has recognized the code.
- If recognition still fails, use the issuer’s app or request a replacement image.
The saved code does not scan at the venue or gate
Open the pass full-screen and increase the phone’s brightness if necessary. If the reader still refuses it, present the issuer’s original pass. An image-derived Wallet pass is not a guarantee that every scanner will accept the code; compatibility depends on the issuer’s code format and reader.
The pass is missing after changing region or device
Not every Wallet feature is offered in every country or region. A pass may also be device-specific. Sign in with the original Google Account, check for a supported transfer flow, and try adding the item again from the provider. If the item was created from a photo, repeat the photo process on the new phone.
Gmail did not save an eligible-looking item
Check both prerequisites: Smart features in other Google products must be enabled in Gmail, and Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail must be enabled in Wallet. The message must also contain an item that Google recognizes as eligible. For anything time-sensitive, add it manually from the provider rather than waiting for auto-save.

Use the method that matches your situation
- You have an issuer link and a Wallet button: use the direct provider method. It is the clearest connection between the issuer’s pass and Wallet.
- You only have a barcode or QR image: use the photo method, label the item clearly, and keep the original in case the code is rejected or changes.
- You receive many eligible passes by email: enable Gmail Smart features and Wallet auto-save, then check the Wallet settings area for saved items.
- You are moving to a new phone: sign in to the same account, check transfer support for that pass type, and keep a way to re-add it manually.
- The pass is important and changes often: prefer the issuer’s direct Wallet integration and verify the current version before you need to scan it.
What to remember
Save from the issuer whenever possible. Use Wallet’s Photo option for an eligible barcode or QR code when no direct button exists. To retrieve an item, open Wallet, swipe up, and search from View more when scrolling is impractical. Gmail auto-save is a convenience controlled by two settings, not a guarantee for every email. Finally, treat device replacement, regional availability and pass-specific transfer rules as separate issues: some items follow your account, while others require a supported transfer or manual re-add.
