A low price or a connector that fits is not proof that a USB charger, cable, or power bank is compatible or safe. Check the device maker’s charging guidance, verify any safety certification against the exact charger model, inspect equipment before use, and stop using anything damaged or modified.
Are cheap USB chargers safe?
Price alone cannot establish whether a charger is safe. USB charger hazards include overheating, fire, electric shock, burns, and damage to a connected device or battery. In a 2019 release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said incidents were more prevalent when chargers had not been evaluated and certified by a third-party testing facility. That is a qualitative finding, not a failure rate for inexpensive phone chargers. CPSC’s 2019 charger safety release
A November 2018 CPSC letter to UL also said test failure was significantly more prevalent among chargers that were not certified. It warned that voltage or current outside limits could damage a device or overheat a charger, with possible lithium-ion fire and explosion hazards. CPSC’s joint letter to UL
These findings support using certification and compatibility as screening checks; they do not mean every uncertified charger will fail or that every low-cost charger is unsafe. The available evidence does not establish a general failure percentage for cheap USB phone chargers.

How to screen a charger before using it
- Confirm compatibility. Check the device manufacturer’s charging instructions and choose a charger suitable for the device and its charging requirements. If you are unsure, ask the manufacturer. - Verify certification for the exact model. Look for a safety certification that can be independently checked, then confirm it applies to the charger’s precise model identifier. A logo, listing description, low price, or resemblance to a known product does not by itself verify certification.
- Check the maker’s instructions and support. Prefer products with clear model identification and instructions. When compatibility or certification cannot be confirmed, do not assume that a matching connector makes the charger suitable.
- Inspect condition. Do not use chargers or cables with damaged plugs, exposed wires, cracked housings, or other damage. Do not use equipment that has been modified.
- Check current safety notices. Search CPSC warnings and recalls for the exact brand and model, not just a broad product category.
Can you use any USB-C cable or charger?
No. A connector fitting into a port establishes only that the parts physically connect; it does not establish that the charger and device are electrically compatible or that either product is safe. Follow the device maker’s charging requirements and use a cable and charger intended to work with that device. If the maker’s guidance does not resolve an uncertainty, contact the manufacturer rather than guessing.
The available sources do not establish model-by-model certification or a ranking of USB cables. Apply the checks that can be verified for the particular product: compatibility, instructions, condition, and any applicable safety warning. Do not treat a generic cable as safer merely because it is inexpensive, or as compatible merely because it fits.

How to use a power bank more safely
Use a power bank according to its own manufacturer’s instructions. A proposed UL 2056 instruction submitted to CPSC in 2023 advises using a power supply or charger recommended or sold by the power-bank manufacturer and avoiding heat, fire, and direct sunlight. The proposal says: “Use of a power supply or charger not recommended or sold by power bank manufacturer may result in a risk of fire or injury to persons.” This is proposed standard language, not a universal legal requirement. - Do not use a damaged or modified power bank.
- Keep it away from heat, fire, and direct sunlight, as the proposed instructions advise.
- Use the charger or power supply recommended or sold by its manufacturer, unless the product’s instructions provide other suitable guidance.
- For overnight charging, follow the instructions for that specific power bank and charger. The available guidance does not establish a universal rule that every power bank is safe—or unsafe—to leave charging overnight.
What to do if a power bank is recalled or warned about
Check the exact model and, where provided, its manufacturing date against the notice. A warning for one model does not apply automatically to all power banks.

Hererod power banks
A CPSC warning issued in September 2026 identifies specific Hererod power-bank models. If your unit matches the warning, follow the notice’s instructions. It advises contacting the local hazardous-waste collection authority and checking whether it accepts defective lithium-ion devices; do not put a device subject to this fire warning in ordinary trash or recycling. HALO Bolt ACDC 58830
A CPSC warning dated November 14, 2025 applies to HALO Bolt model ACDC 58830 units manufactured in or before December 2019. What charger incident statistics do—and do not—show
CPSC reported 156 fire and thermal incident reports involving “universal” chargers for micromobility products from January 1, 2023, through May 16, 2024. Those chargers were marketed for products such as e-bikes and scooters; this figure is not a failure rate for USB phone chargers. CPSC micromobility charger warning
