Finish any file transfer, unmount the USB drive from your Galaxy phone, then disconnect it. Samsung documents several ways to unmount storage; the control you see can vary by model and software version.
Unmount a USB drive from a Galaxy phone
- Wait for file activity to finish. Complete any copy, move, or backup and wait until the operation is done before unmounting. Samsung places unmounting after the transfer in its USB transfer instructions.
- Try the notification panel. Swipe down from the top of the screen. Expand the panel if needed, then tap the notification or control for the connected USB storage and choose Unmount. This route is documented by Samsung India; the exact wording or availability may differ on your Galaxy.
- Use My Files if the notification control is not available. Open My Files, find the external storage device, tap its three-dot options menu, and choose Unmount. Samsung US documents this route in its Galaxy backup and restore instructions.
- Try the Settings route if your phone has it. Samsung India lists Settings > Device Care > Storage > Advanced; tap the eject icon beside the USB drive. This path is not available on every model or software version.
- Disconnect the drive only after unmounting. Wait for the phone to indicate the drive has been unmounted, then unplug it.
Why unmount before unplugging?
Unmounting gives the phone a chance to stop using the storage before it is disconnected. Samsung’s DeX storage guidance says, “To prevent the data on the USB storage device from becoming corrupted, unmount your USB drive first.” The guidance establishes a precaution, not a corruption rate; it does not mean every sudden disconnection will damage files.
If you are using Samsung DeX
In DeX, select the USB icon on the taskbar and choose Unmount. Samsung says the device is safe to remove after this action. Use this DeX-specific control rather than looking for the ordinary phone notification or My Files steps.

A compatible USB flash drive or portable SSD can connect to a Galaxy phone’s charging port. Depending on the phone and drive connectors, you may need an OTG adapter. Samsung Australia distinguishes a Type-C USB drive from a Type-A drive connected through OTG in its Galaxy-to-USB transfer guidance. Check both connectors before choosing an adapter. Samsung’s cited guidance does not provide a complete compatibility list for Galaxy models, storage formats, or capacities.

If no unmount option appears
Do not assume the drive is ready to remove simply because a transfer screen has closed. Check My Files and, if available on your device, the Settings storage screen. If the phone still does not show an unmount control or unmounting fails, consult the manual or Samsung support for your exact model rather than forcing removal. If the drive is not recognized, compatibility depends on the specific phone and drive; the cited guidance does not establish a universal fix.
