Put each used needle, syringe, lancet, or other sharp directly into a sharps disposal container immediately after use. When the container is about three-quarters full, close it and check your local rules before taking it to a collection site or putting it in household trash. Never throw loose sharps into trash or recycling, or flush them.

What to do immediately after using a sharp

  1. Keep a suitable container within reach before you begin. Place it near the injection or other sharps-use area, but somewhere children and pets cannot access it.
  2. Put the entire used sharp into the container immediately. Avoid handling or manipulating the needle, and do not set it loose on a counter while deciding what to do. The FDA advises that used sharps be placed in a disposal container immediately to reduce the risk of sticks, cuts, and punctures. FDA: DOs and DON’Ts of Proper Sharps Disposal
  3. Close the container as designed. Keep it upright and out of reach of children and pets. Follow the container’s fill line and do not force more sharps inside when it is full.

Which container should you use?

Preferred: an FDA-cleared sharps disposal container

Use an FDA-cleared container if you can. These are generally rigid plastic and have a marked fill line. Choose one whose closure works as instructed, and follow the manufacturer’s directions for use and disposal. FDA-cleared containers are generally available from pharmacies, medical-supply companies, health-care providers, and online; portable travel-size containers may be useful when sharps must be carried. See FDA guidance on sharps disposal containers.

Fallback: a qualifying heavy-duty household container

If a cleared sharps container is unavailable, FDA says some organizations and community guidelines recommend a heavy-duty plastic household container as an alternative. A plastic laundry-detergent container is one possible example, but a household bottle is not automatically suitable. It must have a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid that prevents sharps from escaping; remain upright and stable; resist leaks; and be labeled to warn that it contains hazardous waste. Check whether your local disposal program accepts this type of container.

Do not use a thin bottle, glass container, can, or any container that could be punctured or opened easily. FDA describes container options and requirements in Sharps Disposal Containers.

How to handle a full container

When the container is about three-quarters full, close it and follow community disposal instructions. The FDA’s guidance is: “When your sharps disposal container is about three-quarters (3/4) full, follow your community guidelines for proper disposal methods.” Do not overfill, force additional sharps through the opening, or reuse the container. Find an accepted disposal route in your area

Before transporting or discarding a closed container, contact your local trash service or health department and ask what they accept and how it must be prepared. A pharmacist, hospital, health-care provider, or veterinarian may know about nearby programs, but confirm acceptance with the program itself.

These are possible options, not a guarantee that a particular location accepts household sharps. Fees, container requirements, labels, packaging, and collection arrangements vary. Do not assume a sealed container may go in household trash: whether that is allowed depends on local guidance. If someone is accidentally stuck

Wash the exposed area promptly with soap and water, or use a skin antiseptic such as rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. Then seek immediate medical attention by contacting a physician or local hospital. The FDA gives the same advice if blood or other bodily fluids contact the eyes, nose, mouth, or skin.
