Stop using expired eye drops and stop using any product identified in a recall. In the United States, the preferred way to dispose of most unwanted medicines is a take-back location or prepaid mail-back service. Follow the bottle, package insert, and recall notice first; if take-back is unavailable, household trash is generally an option for drops that are not on the FDA flush list, provided you prepare them as FDA directs.
Why expired or recalled eye drops should not be used
Expired drops
FDA says a medicine is not guaranteed to remain safe and effective after its expiration date. Eye drops also need special care: FDA states, “Any drug used in the eyes must be sterile to reduce the risk of infection.” Do not keep using a bottle after its expiration date.
Recalled drops
Stop using a recalled product and follow the instructions in the specific recall notice. Recall directions can depend on the product, affected lot, and packaging, so there is no single disposal procedure that applies to every eye-drop recall. If the notice does not explain disposal, contact the manufacturer, FDA, or a pharmacist for product-specific guidance. FDA also advises checking safety alerts and recalls; seek medical advice if eye-drop use is followed by discharge, pain, vision changes, or discomfort.
Choose a disposal route
- Check the product directions. Read the bottle or package insert and any recall notice. Follow specific disposal directions where provided.
- Look for a take-back or mail-back option. FDA identifies a drug take-back location or prepaid mail-back envelope as the preferred method for most unused and expired medicines. Collection sites may include retail, hospital, or clinic pharmacies and law-enforcement facilities. Confirm that a local service is participating and accepts the specific drops and packaging.
- Check the FDA flush list before considering a toilet. Flush medicine only if the exact medicine is listed there and no product-specific direction says otherwise. Do not pour drops into a sink or toilet simply because they are liquid.
- If take-back is not readily available, use household trash only when appropriate. FDA guidance allows most medicines, including drops, to go in household trash when they are not on the flush list and there are no contrary product-specific instructions. Prepare them as described below.
When you are unsure whether a medicine is on the flush list or whether a service will accept it, ask a pharmacist rather than guessing.

How to prepare eye drops for household trash
Use this FDA method only when take-back is unavailable, the exact medicine is not on the flush list, and the product or recall instructions do not specify another route:
- Remove the medicine from its original container.
- Mix it with an undesirable substance, such as dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds.
- Put the mixture in a sealed plastic bag or another closable container, then place it in household trash.
Do not crush tablets or capsules if you are disposing of other medicines at the same time. Before discarding or recycling empty prescription packaging, scratch out personal information on the label.

What the guidance does not determine
FDA’s general medicine-disposal directions do not set a universal discard-after-opening interval for every eye-drop formulation or a universal disposal instruction for every recalled lot. Product-specific package, recall, and professional directions take precedence. Take-back availability and local waste rules can also vary.
