Yes—you can charge a laptop and phone at the same time from one multiport USB-C charger, provided both devices support charging over USB-C and the charger can supply each device with suitable power while both ports are in use. Check the laptop’s model-specific power requirement and the charger’s simultaneous-use output table; its headline wattage is not necessarily what the laptop port receives.
Check that both devices charge over USB-C
A USB-C-shaped port does not prove that a device accepts charging through it. Confirm USB-C charging support for the exact laptop and phone models in their manufacturers’ guidance. Apple provides model-specific Mac charging advice, and Microsoft publishes Surface charging guidance.
Find the laptop’s power requirement
Look up the recommended or minimum adapter wattage for the exact laptop model. Requirements vary: Apple recommends an adapter with at least the minimum wattage recommended for that Mac model for the best charging experience, while Microsoft lists minimum and fast-charge wattages by Surface model. Use the relevant model’s specification rather than assuming that one wattage fits every laptop.

The charger must offer an output compatible with the phone as well as enough power for the laptop.

Check what each port delivers when both devices are connected
Read the charger’s port-by-port output table for the exact case where the laptop and phone are connected together. Some multiport chargers share capacity or redistribute power as devices connect. The largest single-port rating, or the total printed on the charger, does not guarantee that the laptop will receive that wattage while another port is occupied. USB-IF guidance distinguishes shared-capacity products from chargers with assured capacity and says product labeling should indicate when remaining ports may have different power ratings. Verify both outputs under simultaneous use: the laptop port must meet the laptop’s requirement, and the phone port must provide compatible power. If the table does not clearly state the output with both ports occupied, do not infer it from the charger’s combined rating.

Match the cable to the power you need
Check the USB-C cable’s rated power, especially for the laptop connection. USB-IF compliance guidance specifies power markings for USB-C-to-USB-C cables in the 60 W and 240 W categories. A connector that fits does not establish that a cable is rated for the power you intend to draw. Choose a cable with a rating that supports the output needed by the laptop.

USB Power Delivery (USB PD) negotiates power between compatible equipment: a device requests power, and the charger supplies an available, supported level. USB PD Revision 3.1 includes fixed-voltage levels of 28 V, 36 V, and 48 V, enabling up to 140 W, 180 W, and 240 W respectively, according to the USB-IF announcement. The 240 W figure is a standard capability ceiling—not a promise that a particular charger, cable, laptop, or phone supports that amount.

Choose a charger for your actual device combination
- Identify the exact laptop model. Find its manufacturer-recommended or minimum adapter wattage.
- Confirm charging support and phone requirements. Check that both devices accept charging over USB-C and review any phone-specific charging standard or wattage guidance.
- Find a USB-C PD charger’s simultaneous-use table. Confirm its output for the two ports you plan to use with both devices connected.
- Check both allocations. Make sure the laptop receives the required power and the phone receives a compatible output under that same load.
- Check the cable rating. Use a cable rated for the power the laptop connection needs.
- Reassess if charging is slow or absent. Follow the laptop maker’s guidance and try a power source that meets the model’s recommendation.
Compare chargers by their USB PD support and compatible output profiles, laptop-port wattage with the phone connected, phone-port output under that same load, and cable power rating. Higher total wattage is useful only when the charger allocates it appropriately to the devices you intend to charge.

Charging behavior depends on the laptop model. Apple says supported USB-C-charging Macs can use lower-wattage adapters; Microsoft cautions that some Surface devices may charge slowly or not at all with a lower-wattage charger. If your laptop charges slowly or does not charge, check its model-specific recommendation rather than assuming every laptop will behave the same way.
