For common Windows problems, start with the matching troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If that does not resolve the issue, choose the next step by symptom: use DISM followed by System File Checker for suspected damaged Windows system files, or Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) when Windows will not start. Back up important files before recovery actions that could affect them.
How to run a troubleshooter in Windows
Microsoft’s current guided troubleshooters are in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for the problem or the relevant troubleshooter, and follow the prompts. When the run finishes, Get Help reports its findings and suggested remedies. Check whether the original problem is actually fixed before moving to a more disruptive repair. Microsoft’s instructions for running troubleshooters in Get Help cover the current route.
Available troubleshooters include audio, Bluetooth, camera, network and internet, printers, program compatibility, video playback, Windows Media Player, Windows Update, and Background Intelligent Transfer Service. The former Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant has been replaced by troubleshooters integrated into Get Help, so use the app rather than looking for that older assistant. Fix an app that is not working
For an issue limited to a particular app, check whether Windows provides a repair option before trying broader system repairs. Open Settings and find the app’s available options; the exact Settings route and controls vary. If Repair is offered, try it first. If it is unavailable or does not help, consider Reset only after checking what resetting that app will remove or change. Microsoft’s app repair guidance describes the available controls.

Repair suspected Windows system-file damage
Use these command-line repairs when there is reason to suspect damaged Windows system files, not as the first response to any slow or frozen PC. Microsoft’s sequence is to run DISM first and then System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. By default, DISM uses Windows Update as its repair source. - After DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannowin the same elevated Command Prompt and let the scan complete. - Check whether the original problem is resolved. If it remains, use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for the specific symptom rather than repeating repairs without a reason.
If the Windows Update client is broken, Microsoft documents an alternate DISM repair-source syntax; the right source depends on the files and installation available on the PC. Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions include the command sequence and alternate-source details.

Use Startup Repair when Windows will not start
Startup Repair is intended for boot problems. It scans for common causes and attempts to address issues such as missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It is not a general-purpose fix for every problem that occurs after Windows has started.

- Enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). If Windows cannot start, the way to reach WinRE can depend on the PC and Windows version; follow Microsoft’s instructions for that device.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions and allow the scan to finish.
An encrypted device may ask for its BitLocker recovery key before recovery can continue. Make sure you can access that key. Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance covers the recovery route and what the tool can attempt to fix.

Consider recovery options in order of disruption
If the first repair does not work, use the least disruptive recovery option that fits the cause. Recovery availability and exact steps vary by Windows version. Before an action that could affect files, back up important data if possible; Microsoft warns that some recovery options can result in data loss. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guide explains version-specific choices.
- Uninstall a recent update: Consider this if symptoms began after an update. The route differs depending on whether Windows starts and which version is installed.
- Use a restore option: A restore point or other restore choice may be available on some PCs. Availability and effects depend on the recovery feature configured on that device.
- Reset this PC: Windows may offer a choice to keep personal files or remove everything. Keeping personal files does not mean every app and setting will remain; review the selected option’s explanation before proceeding.
- Reinstall Windows: Some Windows 11 versions provide a reinstall option through recovery settings. Do not assume it is present on every PC or edition.
- Use manufacturer recovery media: An OEM recovery image typically includes hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media may not include. Get device-specific instructions from the PC maker’s official support channel.
What to know if you are using Windows 10
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The PC will continue to work, but under the ended support lifecycle Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes.
