To alternate two podcast playlists on one YouTube live stream, combine their episode files in the intended order in a single OBS Studio VLC Video source, turn on Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off. For example, arrange the files A1, B1, A2, B2. OBS documents looping and shuffle for a VLC source; it does not document automatic alternation between two separately maintained named playlists.
What you need
- OBS Studio, used to encode and send one audio-video output to YouTube.
- VLC installed on the same computer as OBS. OBS lists its VLC Video source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Local episode files that you have the rights to stream, plus access to the YouTube channel’s Live Control Room.

Build the alternating playlist in OBS
- Prepare and order the files. Decide the sequence before adding episodes. To alternate shows, make one ordered list such as A1, B1, A2, B2. A single combined queue makes the order explicit and easy to check.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS scene you will stream, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the episode files in the planned order. Confirm the source appears in the scene and that its audio is routed to the stream mix.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist so playback restarts after the source reaches the end of the queue. Keep Shuffle Playlist disabled for a fixed A/B rotation; shuffle randomizes the files rather than preserving your planned order. If random playback is what you want, shuffle is an option, but it will not guarantee alternation.
- Check the sequence before broadcasting. Play through enough of the queue to confirm the episodes appear in the intended order, the video fits the scene, and audio is audible in the stream mix.
Schedule and start the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Manage, and schedule a stream. A scheduled broadcast creates a watch page viewers can share and lets them set reminders.
- Copy that broadcast’s YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, check it, and select Go live when ready.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers scheduling and connecting an encoder. In this workflow, OBS sends one encoded output to one scheduled broadcast. In Google’s API terminology, a liveStream resource carries encoder transmission settings, while a liveBroadcast resource represents the event; you do not need to manage those API resources for the ordinary Studio workflow.

Being published on YouTube or available in a playlist does not make a podcast episode safe to rebroadcast. You need the rights to stream every audio and video element in the files, including music, clips, and artwork where relevant.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the content remains, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream. If you have a license for third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent interruption when the channel is not allowlisted. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and get any required clearance before going live.
Plan the broadcast length and replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the replay matters, keep the broadcast under that duration; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a longer stream. See YouTube’s encoder help for its archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common rotation problems
- Episodes play in an unexpected order: Check the file order in the VLC Video source playlist and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
- The queue stops at the final episode: Enable Loop Playlist and confirm the playlist contains the files you intend to repeat.
- The VLC Video source is missing or unavailable: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- Video appears but viewers hear no episode audio: Check the source’s audio routing to the OBS stream mix and verify the source is audible in the mix before going live.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Confirm OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the scheduled broadcast, then start streaming in OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room.
- The stream is interrupted after it starts: Check for third-party-content matches and rights issues. A license may not be enough to prevent interruption if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist.
