To run a Mistral AI model locally on Ubuntu, install a runtime such as Ollama, then use its command to download and start a model. You are installing the runtime—not an Ubuntu package called “Mistral.” Ollama publishes a Linux install command, but its documentation does not separately certify Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 by name.
What you need to install
Mistral AI publishes models; a runtime or inference implementation downloads and runs them on your computer. Mistral says its open models can be downloaded and run locally, and links to its Hugging Face page. This guide uses Ollama because it provides a Linux installation command and simple model commands.
Canonical lists Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as released in April 2026, with standard security maintenance through May 2031. Ubuntu’s release-cycle page provides those dates. Ollama’s reviewed instructions apply to Linux generally; they do not explicitly name Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 as certified distributions. If you encounter an OS-specific package or driver issue, check Ollama’s current Linux documentation.
Install Ollama on Ubuntu

Open Terminal.

Run Ollama’s Linux installation command:
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | shThis installs Ollama, the software that runs the model. The command is published in Ollama’s Linux installation instructions.

After installation completes, run one of the model commands below. The first run downloads the model files, so allow time and local disk space for the download.
Choose a Mistral model and run it
Mistral 7B
For the familiar 7B model, run:
ollama run mistralOllama’s catalog describes this model as 7B and lists a 4.4 GB artifact for the current entry. That is the catalog’s artifact size, not a hardware recommendation or a performance measure. See Ollama’s Mistral catalog page.

Ministral 3
To run the Ministral 3 family, use:
ollama run ministral-3Ollama lists 3B, 8B, and 14B variants; its 3B artifact is listed at 3.0 GB. The catalog currently says this family requires Ollama 0.13.1 and describes that version as pre-release. Check the Ministral 3 catalog entry for the current requirement before choosing this route, since model and runtime availability can change.

Check disk space and hardware expectations
Model files are downloaded locally, so make sure your computer has room for the chosen model and any other files you plan to keep. The catalog artifact sizes above are useful reference points, but they do not establish a universal storage requirement for every setup.

Local speed depends on the computer and workload. Ollama warns that large models can be slow without a strong GPU. The sources do not establish a single minimum CPU, memory, or GPU specification that fits every model and use case. If internal storage is tight, an external drive is an option for model files, not a requirement.

For a more hands-on setup, Mistral publishes the mistral-inference repository. It documents Python package installation, downloading model weights, and running command-line demos or chat. This route involves more direct setup than Ollama.

The repository says installation uses a GPU because its xformers dependency requires a GPU to install. It also describes multi-GPU setup for some large models, including 8x7B and 8x22B. Those caveats apply to this library’s documented installation and models; they are not requirements for every local runtime.

After running a model command, confirm that the runtime downloads the model and starts a session. If it fails, check Ollama’s current Linux instructions and the selected model’s catalog entry for updated runtime or system requirements. For Ubuntu-specific driver or package errors, consult the relevant runtime documentation rather than assuming the general Linux command guarantees compatibility with every Ubuntu configuration.
