You can configure a Hindsight agent to query existing memories without giving it the retain tool. Whether you can run Hindsight itself on a free host depends on that host’s container, storage, and resource limits: the vendor’s published full Docker image is approximately 9 GB for AMD64 or 3.7 GB for ARM64. Free self-hosted software does not mean a free host has been verified to run it.
What “read-only” means for a Hindsight agent
Hindsight is agent-memory software with three core operations: retain stores information, recall retrieves relevant memories, and reflect analyzes memories to produce insights. Its quickstart describes recall as combining semantic, keyword/BM25, graph, and temporal retrieval. Retain uses an LLM to extract facts, temporal information, entities, and relationships.
For an agent that should consult existing memory without adding to it, Hindsight’s documented integration example sets enable_retain=False, enable_recall=True, and enable_reflect=True. That removes the retain tool from the agent’s available tools while leaving recall and reflection available. The exact setup depends on the integration you use; these settings are the values in Hindsight’s integration example.

Hindsight’s MCP server marks operations such as recall, reflect, list_*, and get_* with the MCP readOnlyHint annotation. Write operations—including retain, create_*, update_*, and refresh_mental_model—do not receive that hint. The annotation is metadata for MCP clients, not proof that the server enforces authorization. The available documentation does not establish a built-in per-tool authorization configuration that would prevent writes if an agent or client can still reach a write operation.

Hindsight 0.6.1 also documents an optional read-only database backend for recall traffic. That is a separate scaling feature: recall can use a read-only database connection while retain and reflect continue to write through the primary. It does not, by itself, configure an individual agent to lack the retain tool.
What a free-host deployment needs
Hindsight’s Docker quickstart runs an API on port 8888 and a control-plane UI on port 9999. In the full image, the embedded database stores data under /home/hindsight/.pg0, so deployment must preserve that directory across restarts or redeployments. The project also documents pip, Kubernetes/Helm, and Hindsight Cloud deployment options.

Neither image eliminates the need for an external LLM for inference. A host that can download and start the container may still be unsuitable if it lacks sufficient runtime memory or CPU, persistent disk, outbound network access, or a suitable policy for idle services. Free-host quotas and terms change; no specific provider’s current limits are established here.

Keep the embedded database persistent
For the full Docker image, Hindsight recommends a named Docker volume for /home/hindsight/.pg0. The installation guide says Docker creates a named volume with ownership appropriate for the container’s non-root UID 1000. If you use a host bind mount instead, the host directory must be owned by UID 1000; otherwise, the embedded database can fail to start. Confirm that your host preserves the volume through restarts and redeployments rather than only providing temporary container storage.
How to evaluate a free host
Before deploying, compare the provider’s current free tier against the requirements below. A listing that says “Docker supported” does not establish that its disk, image-pull, or runtime limits will work for Hindsight.

- Container support: Can you run the required Docker image and expose the API and UI ports?
- Image-pull and disk limits: Can the host pull an image of the relevant architecture and size, and does its disk quota cover the image plus database data?
- Persistent storage: Is storage durable across restarts, redeployments, and periods of inactivity? Can it be mounted at the database path with the required ownership?
- Compute: Are the provider’s CPU and memory limits sufficient for the selected image and its supporting services?
- Network: Is outbound access available for the external LLM and, for the slim image, any external database, embedding, and reranking services?
- Idle behavior: Does the service sleep or suspend, and what happens to the application and stored data when it does?
- Additional charges: Could managed storage, databases, embedding or reranking services, or LLM calls incur costs even if the compute tier is free?
Check these items with the host before committing data or relying on the service. Hindsight’s published software and image information cannot certify a third-party host’s present-day free-tier behavior.

Choose between self-hosting, the slim image, and Hindsight Cloud

Vectorize describes Hindsight as MIT-licensed and self-hosting as free. That refers to the software, not the machine, persistent storage, or LLM usage. The vendor’s Hindsight Cloud is a separate managed service; its pricing and starting-credit terms can change.
