You can run a continuous candle or fireplace ambience stream on YouTube with a black video feed and audio, but YouTube’s official guidance does not prescribe a particular black-screen-with-audio setup or confirm that format as approved. Use only visuals and sounds you own or are licensed to broadcast, test the actual video and audio before going live, and plan for stream interruptions and the limits on saved replays.
What a black-screen ambience stream involves
A black-screen stream sends a live video feed with no visible fireplace or candle scene while fireplace, candle, or other ambience audio plays. It can suit listeners who want sound without a bright picture, but the precise OBS scene configuration is not covered by YouTube’s official encoder instructions. Treat the configuration below as a general setup approach, not a verified OBS recipe or a YouTube endorsement.
Do not use a blank picture to misrepresent what viewers are receiving. Preview the incoming stream and check it as a viewer so you know that the video is actually black and the intended audio is audible.

Clear rights to both the sound and any video
Use audio and visuals that you created or have permission to broadcast on a YouTube livestream. A license for a clip should explicitly cover livestream or broadcast use; permission to download or use a track in another context does not by itself establish livestream rights. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the feed with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even if you have a license, an interruption can occur unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
How to set up the 24/7 stream
- Prepare your source. In your encoder, make a scene that produces the intended black video and routes your licensed ambience audio to the stream. YouTube’s official material does not specify the exact OBS source, filter, or scene arrangement for this. Test your chosen configuration rather than assuming that a black preview means audio is being sent correctly.
- Create an encoder broadcast in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to connect an encoder. If you have not enabled streaming before, allow for the activation delay described above.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. The stream URL and stream key direct the encoder feed to YouTube. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. Use the key shown for the intended stream and do not publish it in screenshots, chat, or public documents.
- Set a sustainable encoder profile. YouTube currently recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your computer or internet connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube’s networking advice recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. Other devices sharing your connection and interruptions in service can reduce the upload capacity available to the encoder. Test at the intended settings before relying on the setup overnight or for a long run. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Preview and start the broadcast. Check the incoming picture and audio in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before going live. Confirm that the picture is black as intended, the ambience audio is present, and the stream health is acceptable. Then start the broadcast in the encoder and monitor status messages and stream health.
Can you leave a fireplace stream running overnight?
Yes, if your encoder, computer, power, and internet connection remain available and stable. A local software-encoder setup depends on the computer and connection continuing to run; an outage, sleep setting, encoder failure, or restart can interrupt the broadcast. Disable sleep only if appropriate for your machine and environment, keep the encoder visible to status alerts, and check stream health rather than assuming that a running application means YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

YouTube’s official setup material confirms that an encoder can be software or hardware, but it does not establish a reliability guarantee for a particular home setup. A long-running stream is more vulnerable to accumulated local or network interruptions than a short test, so validate the arrangement before depending on it.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Do not count on YouTube preserving the replay of a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its wording is: “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” If keeping a replay matters, make a local recording and/or plan separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on a particular handoff between sessions. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The channel cannot go live: check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. If this is the first activation, it may take up to 24 hours to become available.
- The broadcast does not appear in YouTube Studio: verify that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the broadcast, then check the encoder connection and Live Control Room status messages.
- The video is black but there is no audio: inspect the encoder’s audio source and output routing, then preview the incoming stream. YouTube’s encoder help does not document a black-screen-specific audio configuration, so confirm the actual feed rather than relying only on local playback.
- The stream buffers or loses health: reduce the encoder bitrate or video settings to a level your upload connection can sustain, check for competing network use, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
- The feed is interrupted or replaced: check for a third-party-content match. Review the rights for both sound and visuals; if you hold a license, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- The replay is missing: a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording when you need a dependable copy, or structure sessions below YouTube’s stated archive boundary.
