To rotate a screen in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select the display you want to change, then choose an option under Display orientation. For an external monitor in portrait mode, you must also rotate the monitor itself; the Windows setting changes only the image.

Change a screen’s orientation in Windows 11

  1. Open Start, type Settings, and open Settings > System > Display. Microsoft’s display instructions identify this page as the place to change display settings.
  2. If you have more than one screen, select the intended display in the layout at the top of the page. The orientation setting applies to the selected display, not automatically to every connected screen. See Microsoft’s multi-monitor guidance.
  3. Find Display orientation and select the orientation you want, such as Portrait or Landscape. Windows recommends an orientation for the screen; choose the desired setting from the drop-down.
  4. Apply or confirm the change if Windows prompts you. If the image becomes difficult to use, return to Display orientation and choose the previous setting.

Portrait mode on an external monitor also requires a physical rotation

Changing the Windows setting rotates the image, not the monitor. Microsoft notes that a monitor must also be physically rotated for portrait use. Before turning it, check the monitor’s instructions and make sure its stand or mount supports pivoting and has enough clearance.

Pivot capability depends on the monitor or mount. For example, Dell’s E2425HSM product page specifies bi-directional pivot up to 90 degrees; this is an example, not a requirement or recommendation for every setup. Check the documentation for your exact model.

Rotate one screen in a multi-monitor setup

To make only one monitor portrait, select that monitor in the display layout before changing Display orientation. Verify the layout selection carefully, especially if the screens are arranged side by side or have similar sizes. Then change the orientation and physically rotate that monitor if it is an external screen.

What Windows key + O does

Microsoft documents Windows key + O as a shortcut to lock device orientation on supported devices. It is an orientation-lock shortcut, not the documented way to choose portrait or landscape; use the Display orientation drop-down in Settings for that. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference.

If the screen does not rotate as expected

  • The wrong screen changed: Return to Settings > System > Display and select the intended display in the layout before changing orientation.
  • The image changed, but the monitor stayed horizontal: Rotate the external monitor physically, provided its stand or mount supports it. Windows cannot move the monitor for you.
  • The monitor will not pivot safely: Do not force it. Check its maker’s setup guidance and the mount’s compatibility; a pivot-capable stand or mount may be needed for portrait placement.
  • You meant to stop automatic device rotation: On supported devices, use the orientation lock shortcut rather than treating it as a replacement for the Settings orientation control.
