On a Chromebook, press Ctrl + Shift + Rotate to turn the screen 90 degrees. That shortcut controls the ChromeOS display, not the Chrome browser, so it does not rotate a webpage or a browser window. Google lists it under its system and display shortcuts, separate from the browser shortcuts. This guide covers how to use it, what to do when your keyboard has no Rotate key, and what the shortcut does not do.
Rotate the screen on a Chromebook
- Locate the Rotate key on the keyboard. On Chromebooks that have one, it is usually on the top row.
- Hold Ctrl and Shift, then press the Rotate key once. The display turns 90 degrees.
- To keep rotating, repeat the combination. Each press turns the display by the documented 90-degree step.
Google’s Chromebook keyboard shortcuts help page, checked on 2026-10-07, lists this action as “Rotate screen 90 degrees” under system and display shortcuts.
If your keyboard has no Rotate key
Not every Chromebook keyboard includes a dedicated Rotate key, and the shortcut depends on that key being present. Check the shortcut list built into the device instead of relying on a printed label:

- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the shelf.
- Select Settings.
- Under Device, select Keyboard and inputs.
- Select View keyboard shortcuts and look for “Rotate screen 90 degrees” in the system and display section.
If the action is not listed on your model, the shortcut is not available on that keyboard. Google’s public help page does not provide a full on-screen walkthrough for changing display orientation, so this article does not describe a separate settings path.

What the shortcut does and does not do
- It rotates the Chromebook display by 90 degrees per action.
- It applies to the whole device screen, so Chrome and every other open app turn with it.
- It is not a Chrome browser shortcut. It does not appear in the “Page & web browser” group of Google’s list.
- It does not change how a single webpage is laid out. To make a site easier to read in a narrow or rotated view, use the page’s own responsive layout or zoom controls.
Using Chrome on Windows or Mac
The instructions above come from Chromebook Help and apply only to ChromeOS. Installing Chrome on a Windows or Mac computer does not give that computer this shortcut. Google’s Chromebook page also says to use the Windows key or Command key in place of Search or Launcher where a keyboard is connected to a Chromebook, but the rotation shortcut itself uses Ctrl, Shift, and Rotate and does not require either key.
For a Windows PC or Mac, rotation is handled by the operating system’s display settings rather than by Chrome. Check your system’s own display or keyboard documentation for the correct method on that platform.
