If you want to rewrite selected text without leaving your app, start with Apple Writing Tools: select the text, open Writing Tools, and choose Rewrite or a tone. For a hotkey-driven command that can replace selected text in the active app, Raycast Quick Fix is another documented option. Apple also supports Writing Tools actions in Shortcuts on macOS 26, but that does not establish a universal default shortcut for inline replacement.
Choose the Mac rewriting workflow that fits
| Your priority | Best-supported starting point | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Rewrite a selection using Apple’s built-in tools | Apple Writing Tools | Opens rewrite choices for selected text and shows the result inline. Availability depends on your macOS version and Apple Intelligence being enabled. Apple’s Mac guide |
| Automate an Apple writing action | Shortcuts with Writing Tools on macOS 26 | Apple identifies proofread, rewrite, and summarize actions for Shortcuts. This is automation support, not evidence of a universal global shortcut that directly replaces selected text. Apple’s WWDC25 session |
| Run an AI editing command from a hotkey in the active app | Raycast Quick Fix | Runs Raycast’s Fix Spelling and Grammar AI Command, targeting selected text by default or the whole focused field. It requires Accessibility permission to read and replace text. Raycast’s AI Commands manual |
The available documentation describes features and setup, not a controlled comparison of speed, accuracy, or productivity. Neither workflow is established as compatible with every app.
Rewrite selected text with Apple Writing Tools
- Select the text you want to change in a supported app.
- Control-click the selection and choose Show Writing Tools. In some apps, including Notes and Mail, you may instead see a Writing Tools button near the selection or in the toolbar.
- Choose Rewrite, Friendly, Professional, or Concise. To specify a different goal, choose Describe your change and enter the instruction.
- Review the inline result. Apple’s guide says, “A rewritten version of your text appears inline.” It also describes retrying and switching between the original and updated text.
Apple says to use a current macOS version and turn on Apple Intelligence for the latest available Writing Tools features. Availability can vary, so the menu or controls may not appear in every app or configuration. See Apple’s Writing Tools guide for Mac.
Use Raycast Quick Fix as a hotkey-triggered editor
Raycast describes Quick Fix as running its Fix Spelling and Grammar AI Command directly in a focused app. Its documented default trigger is a double press of the right Shift key. The default target is selected text; Raycast also lets you configure it to target the entire focused field.

- WORKS WITH MAC, IPAD, OR IPHONE — It pairs quickly with your device so you can get to work right away.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
- Install and open Raycast, then configure its AI Commands and Quick Fix settings using Raycast’s AI Commands manual.
- Choose whether Quick Fix should work on the selection or the whole focused field, and set a hotkey if you want a different trigger.
- On first use, grant Raycast macOS Accessibility permission when prompted. Raycast says it needs this permission to read and replace text in the active app.
- In the app where you are editing, select text if you want to limit the change, then invoke Quick Fix. Review the replacement in context.
Raycast documents an experimental Preserve Formatting option for supported apps such as Slack and Notion. Treat that as an app-specific experimental feature, not a guarantee that formatting will survive in other apps. Raycast’s broader keyboard model also allows custom global hotkeys for commands; see its Keyboard Shortcuts manual.

Apple’s WWDC25 session says Writing Tools are available as Shortcuts in macOS 26, including actions to proofread, rewrite, and summarize. Apple also describes making follow-up requests after a rewrite, such as asking for a warmer or more conversational version. This is useful if you want to incorporate writing actions into an automation. The cited session does not document one universal default keyboard shortcut for direct inline replacement, so do not assume a Shortcut behaves exactly like selecting text and invoking an editor in place.
