To revoke a risky marketplace or smart-contract approval, find the permission for the right wallet account and network in a wallet tool or approval checker, submit a revocation transaction, then verify the permission is gone. Disconnecting a site from your wallet is not enough: an on-chain approval can remain active after disconnection. Revocation stops future use of that permission once confirmed; it cannot reverse a transfer that already happened.
What an approval does—and what it does not do
A wallet connection lets a dApp interact with your account and see public account information. By itself, connecting does not authorize the dApp to move a token. An approval is a separate on-chain permission granted to a spender contract.
- ERC-20 allowance: lets a spender use a specified amount of a fungible token. An unlimited allowance can authorize the maximum possible amount and remain usable until revoked.
- ERC-721 or ERC-1155 approval: can authorize a marketplace or other operator to transfer NFTs covered by that permission.
Disconnecting a dApp ends its wallet connection, but does not cancel an existing allowance or operator approval. Revoking withdraws the relevant token-moving permission; it does not undo transactions already completed.
How to revoke approvals safely
- Choose the right account and network. Open your wallet’s official approval-management feature or go directly to a well-known approval checker. Verify the site domain before connecting. Select the wallet account and the chain on which you created the approval. Ethereum, Polygon, and other networks have separate approval records, so review each relevant chain.
- Review each permission before acting. Check the token or NFT collection, spender contract, amount or operator status, and network shown for each row. Decide which spenders you still need and which you want to remove. A displayed project name is not proof that a contract is safe.
- Start the revocation and inspect the wallet prompt. Select the permission’s revoke control, then read the transaction details in your wallet. Revocation is an on-chain transaction and requires gas; the fee varies with the network and current conditions. Confirm only if the account, network, and action match what you intended.
- Verify the result. Wait for confirmation, then refresh or reconnect the checker and inspect the same account and network again. ethereum.org recommends reconnecting after a few minutes to verify the change. Confirm the permission no longer appears or is shown as revoked.
- Repeat on other chains and accounts as needed. A checker for one network will not reveal permissions on another, and a review of one wallet account does not cover your other accounts.
Ways to review permissions
| Method | Coverage and review | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MetaMask Portfolio approval management | MetaMask’s help documentation listed support for Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain at access time; it describes reviewing approvals from the connected wallet. | Availability and supported networks can change. Check MetaMask’s current help page for the latest instructions: MetaMask approval guidance. |
| Etherscan Token Approval tool | OpenSea’s Ethereum revocation instructions point readers to Etherscan’s Token Approval tool for checking Ethereum approvals. | It is a third-party service, not an OpenSea wallet feature. Confirm that you are on the correct Etherscan site and Ethereum account: OpenSea’s revocation instructions. |
| Revoke.cash | Its approval checker can display supported token and NFT approvals across supported networks. | Detection depends on contract behavior and indexed events; it may not show every older or non-standard approval. Review the service’s limitations: Revoke.cash FAQ. |
These are different interfaces for inspecting permissions, not guarantees of complete detection. For any method, verify the domain and carefully check the wallet’s transaction prompt before signing.

Limited vs. unlimited ERC-20 approvals
| Allowance type | Maximum token amount authorized | How long it can be used | Convenience and fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited | Capped at the amount you specify. | Remains usable until the allowance is spent, changed, or revoked; the cap alone is not an expiry date. | Can mean approving again when you need to spend more, with another network transaction and fee. |
| Unlimited | Authorizes the maximum possible amount of that token. | Persists until you revoke it; moving tokens out of the dApp does not cancel the allowance. | Can reduce repeat approval prompts and transactions, but exposes a larger amount to that spender’s permission. |
Where the wallet or dApp offers an amount choice, use a limited allowance if it suits your needs. Unlimited permission is more convenient, but if the spender is compromised, the approved token balance may be exposed. MetaMask explains the allowance distinction in its token approvals explainer.
What revoking an NFT marketplace approval changes
After an NFT approval is revoked, the marketplace cannot use that permission to buy, sell, or transfer the covered NFT until you approve it again. OpenSea and Revoke.cash note that active OpenSea listings may require approvals to remain active. If a listing or transfer stops working after revocation, review its approval needs and grant only the permission you intend to restore.

Why a clean approval list may not be the whole story
Approval tools depend on contract behavior and the events they index. Revoke.cash says its NFT detection uses standard ERC-721 and ERC-1155 approval events; older collections such as CryptoKitties may not emit the events standard checkers rely on. Therefore, an empty list is not proof that every possible historical or custom permission has been found. If a permission seems missing or a collection behaves unexpectedly, consult the collection’s official documentation or an appropriate block explorer.
Related wallet security
A hardware wallet can add a layer of protection for funds and NFTs, as OpenSea’s safety guidance notes, but it does not erase approvals already recorded on-chain. Treat wallet storage and approval review as separate security steps. See OpenSea’s NFT safety guidance.
