There is no universal off switch for every AI agent. To shut one down safely, identify the platform and identity it uses, block or disable that execution path, stop work already in progress, disconnect accounts and revoke permissions, then deal separately with API keys, secrets, schedules and external triggers. Finally, verify in both the agent platform and the services it could access.
Disabling an agent is not always the same as cancelling its jobs, and removing an IAM role does not necessarily invalidate an API key. The procedure below separates those controls so an agent cannot continue through a forgotten account, service principal or scheduler.
What you must stop: four separate control layers
“Turn off the agent” can mean several different things. Treat these as separate layers and check each one:

- Availability: hide, disable or suspend the agent so people and automations cannot start new work.
- Authentication: prevent the agent identity, service account or user account from signing in or receiving new tokens.
- Authorization: remove OAuth grants, IAM roles, app assignments and other permissions from the identity.
- Execution and credentials: cancel active or queued runs, scheduled jobs and workflow triggers, then revoke or rotate API keys, secrets and tokens.
These controls have different scope and reversibility. A connection disconnect may affect one account; a Conditional Access policy can block an entire class of identities; deletion may be permanent. Choose the narrowest control that contains the problem, escalating only when you have assessed the collateral impact.

Emergency shutdown sequence
If an agent is currently acting in a way that could cause harm, contain it first and investigate second. Use this order:
- Block the execution path. Use the platform’s stop, disable or suspend control. If the agent is obtaining tokens now, apply the narrowest identity-provider block available while you investigate.
- Stop work already in motion. Cancel running and queued jobs, workflow executions, scheduled tasks and external triggers. Do not assume that disabling an agent cancels work started by its owner or another scheduler.
- Revoke access at the source. Disconnect every connected account and remove the relevant OAuth grants, IAM roles, service-account permissions and application assignments.
- Handle credentials separately. Inventory API keys, bearer tokens, secrets and shared credentials. Revoke or rotate each credential the agent could use; a role removal may not invalidate a separately issued key.
- Verify and monitor. Confirm that the identity cannot authenticate or obtain tokens, review sign-in and audit logs, and watch for continued activity through another principal or scheduler.
- Restore deliberately. Re-enable only after you understand the agent’s integrations, identities, permissions and schedules and have reduced them to the minimum required.
Identify the agent’s real identity and access paths
Before changing settings, record enough information to distinguish the visible agent from the accounts and infrastructure behind it. An agent may use more than one principal.
Build a shutdown inventory
- Agent name, owner, workspace or project, and deployment environment.
- Identity type: platform-native agent identity, ordinary application, service principal, service account or user account.
- Connected OAuth apps and provider accounts.
- API keys, access tokens, signing credentials and secrets in a vault or secret manager.
- IAM roles, app assignments, group memberships and delegated permissions.
- Schedulers, webhooks, queues, workflow definitions and third-party triggers.
- Active sessions, runs, jobs and the logs needed to prove what happened.
Keep this inventory while you work. Deleting a session or agent object may not delete independent resources such as a service account, memory store, environment, vault entry or scheduled workflow.
ChatGPT connected apps and workspace controls
ChatGPT exposes more than one control for connected apps. Changing an app permission changes how an available app may be used; it does not disconnect the app or revoke access that was already granted to the provider account.
Disconnect an individual account
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps or Plugins, depending on the interface presented to your account.
- Select the connected app.
- Choose Disconnect and confirm. If the provider has its own unlink or revoke page, use that as well.
Disconnect each account separately. A permission change in the ChatGPT interface should not be treated as proof that the provider-side OAuth grant has disappeared.
Workspace-wide controls
Workspace administrators can control app availability. Enterprise and Edu administrators can also configure role-based access where supported. Workspace owners can disable agent mode for Enterprise and Edu workspaces and control which apps it may use.
Check the data path as well as direct actions. Controls that restrict an app’s direct actions may not restrict data retrieved through synced data. If the concern is information exposure, review synced-data access and the provider account, not only the action toggle.

Microsoft Entra Agent ID
Microsoft distinguishes newer agent identities from older agents represented as ordinary applications or service principals. The older objects follow the normal application and service-principal governance process, so first determine which object you are actually managing.
Disable one identity or its blueprint
In the Entra admin center, open Entra ID > Agents and select the individual agent identity or its blueprint. Disabling the identity prevents access and token issuance until it is re-enabled. Disabling a blueprint affects agents created from that blueprint, so confirm the scope before applying it.
Use Conditional Access for authentication blocking
Conditional Access can block agent-identity authentication, authentication by agents’ user accounts, or users signing in to agents. Microsoft recommends creating and testing a policy in report-only mode before enforcement. Applying Conditional Access policies requires Microsoft Entra ID P1.
Tenant-wide restrictions can stop more than the problematic agent. Microsoft warns that broadly disabling agent identities may disrupt agents and Microsoft product experiences. Start with an individual identity or blueprint when that is sufficient, and document the affected applications before using a tenant-wide policy.

Re-enabling a disabled agent identity restores access and token issuance. Treat that as a deliberate recovery action: verify roles, app assignments, Conditional Access results and schedules before turning it back on.
Gemini Enterprise Business edition

Use Suspend when owner-run schedules must stop as well as shared-user schedules. Use Disable when hiding the shared agent is enough and you have separately checked owner activity.

Google-made agents cannot be disabled, suspended or deleted. A private Agent Designer agent can be deleted, but it does not expose the same disable, suspend or permission-management options. For those agents, secure the underlying accounts, credentials and triggers instead of looking for a missing toggle.
Google Cloud deployed agents
A deployed agent commonly acts through a service account or another principal. Removing an agent from a user interface does not remove that principal’s roles, keys or secrets.
Find the principal and its roles
- Identify the service account or agent identity configured on the deployment.
- Review project, folder and resource-level IAM grants, including grants inherited from groups or other principals.
- List API keys, Secret Manager secrets and other credentials that the deployment can read or use.
- Find schedulers, Cloud workflows, queues, webhooks and deployment pipelines that can invoke it.
Remove an IAM role
For a one-off revocation, use the IAM console or the Google Cloud CLI. The documented command pattern is:
gcloud projects remove-iam-policy-binding PROJECT_ID --member=PRINCIPAL --role=ROLE_NAME
Replace the project, member and role with the exact values from the policy. Google advises using the console or gcloud for one-off role changes, or Terraform for programmatic IAM management, rather than writing custom Python to grant or revoke roles.

Revoke credentials separately
API keys and Secret Manager secrets are separate resources. Rotate or revoke them as appropriate; removing one IAM role does not automatically invalidate a key already accepted by a service, nor does it remove a second service account that can perform the same action. If more than one principal is attached to the deployment, repeat the review for each one.

Stop runs before changing a session
- Send a user message asking the agent to stop its runs, or wait until every run has ended.
- If a session is actively running, use Interrupt to move it toward idle.
- Confirm that no workflow run remains open.
- Only then update tools or MCP servers, archive the session or delete it.
An interrupt does not end an open workflow run. Deleting a session also does not delete independent agents, skills, environments, memory stores or vaults. Revoke permissions and remove those resources separately if they are part of the incident.
Choosing the narrowest effective control

How to verify that the agent is really stopped
Do not rely on a success toast or a missing gallery tile. Verify each layer:

- Identity test: the agent identity or service account cannot authenticate or obtain a new token.
- Permission review: the OAuth grant, IAM role, app assignment and group-based access are gone or explicitly denied.
- Execution review: active sessions are idle or terminated, queues are empty, scheduled jobs are cancelled and webhooks or workflows are disabled.
- Credential review: keys and secrets are revoked or rotated, and no deployment still contains an old copy.
- Service-side evidence: audit, sign-in and access logs show denied attempts rather than successful calls.
- Alternate-principal check: search for another service account, application, owner account or deployment that can perform the same action.
Preserve relevant logs before deleting objects. They may be needed to determine what the agent accessed and to prove when access ended.

“I changed the permission, but the provider still has access.”
A permission setting is not the same as disconnecting an OAuth account. Disconnect the connection in the platform and revoke or unlink it at the provider.
“The agent is disabled, but a job still ran.”
Check owner-run schedules, queued workflow executions and external schedulers. Cancel each run and trigger; availability controls do not have identical job-cancellation behavior.
“Removing the IAM role did nothing.”
Look for inherited roles, a second principal, an API key, a Secret Manager secret or a token that remains valid. Revoke or rotate credentials and repeat the principal inventory.

In Managed Agents, an interrupt moves a session toward idle but does not end an open workflow run. Send a stop request or wait for every run to finish before session changes.

“A tenant-wide policy broke unrelated features.”
Use report-only testing, inspect sign-in results and narrow the policy to the affected identity or blueprint where possible. Broad Microsoft Entra restrictions can affect agents and Microsoft product experiences.
“Deleting removed the visible object, but activity continues.”
Deletion may not remove independent service accounts, environments, vaults, memory stores, skills, schedules or workflow definitions. Revisit the inventory and disable those resources directly.
When it is safe to restore an agent
Restore only after you can answer four questions: which identity will run it, exactly which resources it needs, which schedules and triggers are enabled, and how you will detect unexpected activity. Re-enable the smallest object first, test with non-sensitive data, confirm logs and token issuance, and add permissions incrementally. Keep broad Conditional Access policies, tenant-wide blocks and permanent deletion as deliberate administrative decisions rather than routine troubleshooting steps.
Menu names, licensing requirements, roles and execution behavior can change. The procedures above reflect official platform documentation reviewed on October 13, 2026 and apply to the named surfaces; ordinary applications, service principals, third-party orchestration frameworks and custom deployments may require their own identity, credential and scheduler controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will disabling an AI agent cancel every scheduled task?
No. Cancellation behavior is platform-specific. For example, Gemini Enterprise Disable cancels active schedules for shared users but can leave owner-run jobs possible, while Suspend cancels active schedules for both. Check and cancel schedules and queued runs independently.
Does revoking an IAM role invalidate an API key?
Not necessarily. API keys and Secret Manager secrets are separate resources, and another principal may have equivalent access. Revoke or rotate credentials and review every identity used by the deployment.
Is deleting an agent the fastest way to stop it?
Deletion can be permanent and may not remove independent sessions, service accounts, workflow definitions or secrets. Prefer a reversible disable, suspend or authentication block while you investigate, then delete only when you understand the dependencies.
What should I do if I cannot identify the agent’s account?
Use audit and sign-in logs, deployment configuration, scheduler definitions and secret-access records to map the agent to a principal. Block the narrowest identifiable identity temporarily, then complete the credential and trigger inventory before restoring access.
