To revoke an AI agent’s payment access, do four separate things: disconnect the agent or connected app from the account it uses, remove any saved card or bank method, cancel subscriptions or recurring debits, and contact your card issuer or bank about transactions that already occurred. These controls are usually held by different services, so removing a card alone may not disconnect the agent or cancel billing. Start with the agent account, then work through the payment provider, merchant and issuer controls.
What each revocation action actually changes
“Revoke access” can mean several different operations. An agent may have permission to use an account, a service may have stored your card, a merchant may have an active subscription, and your bank may still be able to process a previously authorized debit. Use the control that matches the risk you are trying to stop.
| Action | Permission or payment it stops | Who normally controls it | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disconnect the agent or connected app | Future access to the account or service connected to the agent | The agent’s service, account provider or connected-app settings | It may not remove a saved card, cancel a subscription, undo data already shared or reverse completed transactions. |
| Remove a stored payment method | The service’s ability to use the saved card or bank method for a new charge | The merchant or service billing page | It does not necessarily cancel a subscription, erase an invoice or dispute an existing charge. |
| Cancel a subscription or recurring authorization | Scheduled renewals or recurring debits | The merchant or agent service; sometimes your bank must also be notified | It does not automatically disconnect the agent or settle an amount you already owe. |
| Lock, replace or dispute a payment | A compromised card or a transaction that has already posted or is pending | Your card issuer, bank or credit union | It does not remove the agent’s account access or cancel the merchant relationship. |
Do not assume one service has authority over all four layers. A payment platform can process a transaction while the merchant controls the subscription and the agent controls its own connection.

Write down the agent’s name, the account or workspace it uses, the merchant shown on your statement, the last four digits of the payment method and whether the payment is a card charge, bank debit, wallet transaction or invoice. Save screenshots of the agent’s connected-app page and recent billing activity. This gives the bank and merchant enough detail to trace a disputed transaction and helps you confirm that the correct account was disconnected.

Step 1: Disconnect the AI agent or connected app
ChatGPT app connections
For ChatGPT-connected services, OpenAI’s help instructions say to open Settings, choose Apps or Plugins (the label can vary as the interface changes), select the connected app and choose Disconnect. Follow the current path in OpenAI’s app-permissions guidance.
Changing an app’s permission settings is not the same as disconnecting it. OpenAI explains that permission controls govern how an app may be used after access exists; changing those controls does not itself disconnect the provider account or revoke access that has already been granted to the external provider. Use the explicit disconnect option, then verify that the app no longer appears as connected.
Other agents and integrations
For another agent, look in the account it uses for headings such as Connected apps, Authorized applications, Integrations, Extensions or Security. Open the individual connection and select Disconnect, Revoke or the equivalent. If the agent uses an API key or service account, revoke that credential at the account owner’s security page as well as removing the visible app connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter disconnecting, sign out of other sessions if the service offers a session-management page. This is especially important when the agent was connected on a shared computer or through a team workspace.
Step 2: Revoke the connection at the payment platform
An agent may not connect directly to your bank or card. It may operate through a payment platform or a third-party extension that has its own authorization record. Check that platform’s connected-app or authorized-applications page even after disconnecting the agent.

Stripe says eligible users can revoke a platform or extension’s access from Dashboard settings. The available control depends on how the connection was created; see Stripe’s explanation of security, permissions and access levels for third-party connections.
When a platform controls the account
Some connected accounts are administered by a platform. Stripe notes that an account holder may be unable to revoke the administering platform directly in a platform-controlled account. In that situation, ask the platform to initiate disconnection and request written confirmation of the date and scope of the change. Removing a user from a dashboard does not necessarily terminate the platform’s underlying authorization.

Step 3: Remove the stored card or bank method
Once the agent connection is disconnected, remove the payment method saved by the service. For OpenAI billing, use the account’s billing settings and follow the instructions in OpenAI’s payment-method removal article.
A removal button may be unavailable when the method is the default for an active subscription, an auto-reload rule, an unpaid invoice or another account permission. Resolve the blocking condition shown by the billing page rather than repeatedly deleting and re-adding the card. If the service requires a replacement method before allowing removal, cancel the subscription first or contact the service’s billing support.
Removing a stored method prevents the service from using that saved credential for a new transaction when the service honors the removal. It does not cancel a subscription, erase an outstanding invoice or reverse a charge that has already been authorized or completed. Keep the confirmation email or screenshot showing the removal.

- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
Step 4: Cancel subscriptions, auto-reload and recurring debits
Merchant subscriptions
Open the merchant or agent service’s billing page and cancel each recurring product separately. A monthly plan, usage-based subscription, credit auto-reload and one-time invoice can have different controls. Confirm the next renewal date and save the cancellation number or email. If the agent is supplied through a platform, cancel at the platform that appears as the merchant on your statement, not only inside the agent’s chat interface.

Disconnecting an agent is not a substitute for cancellation. As a service-specific example, Stripe’s GB consumer terms for its Onelink service say that disconnection prevents further data sharing or transactions through the account but does not affect transactions already approved or completed; previously shared data may remain with the agent, and approved recurring payments may continue. Those terms apply to that named service and geography, so check the terms for your own provider at Stripe’s GB Consumer Terms of Service rather than generalizing the result.
Automatic bank debits
If you authorized an automatic electronic debit from a bank or credit-union account, revoke the authorization with the company taking the payment and tell your bank or credit union that the authorization has been revoked. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes these steps in its guidance on stopping automatic electronic debits: CFPB instructions for stopping an automatic debit. A stop-payment order may be available through the bank.
Stopping a debit does not end the underlying contract or eliminate an amount you legitimately owe. Ask the merchant how to close the subscription and settle any final invoice, and keep the bank’s confirmation of the stop request. The CFPB article focuses on payday-lender debits; confirm the process, fees and notice requirements for your own payment type and jurisdiction.
Step 5: Handle a charge that already happened
Recognize the transaction type
First check whether the charge is pending or posted, whether the merchant descriptor matches the agent or its payment platform and whether another authorized user made it. A pending authorization may disappear without posting, but an issuer can explain whether a temporary hold can be released. Do not wait for a pending charge to become a completed charge if you believe the card is compromised.

Credit-card charge disputes
Contact the card issuer promptly using the number on the card or the issuer’s secure app. Ask how to lock or replace the card and how to dispute the transaction. The CFPB says written notice of a credit-card billing error generally must be sent within 60 calendar days after the charge appears on the statement. This is U.S. guidance; follow your issuer’s instructions and the rules where your card was issued. See the CFPB’s credit-card dispute guidance for the notice process.
Debit-card and electronic-transfer disputes
Debit-card and electronic-fund-transfer investigations use different procedures and reporting windows. Report an unauthorized bank-account transaction as soon as you discover it and follow the bank’s required written or electronic notice process. The CFPB explains the consumer response steps at its unauthorized-transaction guidance. Do not apply the 60-day credit-card figure to every debit or bank-transfer situation.
When card details may be compromised
If the agent or a connected service may have exposed the card number, ask the issuer whether to freeze the card, issue a replacement number and monitor for additional attempts. The CFPB recommends watching accounts closely after card data is hacked; its advice is available at this card-data monitoring page. A replacement card addresses the credential, but it does not disconnect the agent or cancel a subscription, so complete those steps separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Verify that access and billing are actually closed
Do a second pass after each change. A successful-looking button is not proof that every control changed.
- Refresh the agent’s connected-app list and confirm the connection is absent or marked disconnected.
- Check the payment platform’s authorized-applications page for the same provider.
- Open the merchant billing page and confirm that the subscription, auto-reload and scheduled renewal are cancelled.
- Review saved payment methods and confirm that the old card or bank method is no longer listed, unless the service requires it for a final invoice.
- Review recent and pending account activity for new authorizations, refunds or credits.
- Save confirmation pages, emails, ticket numbers and the dates and names of support representatives.
- Set transaction alerts at the bank or card issuer and watch at least the next statement cycle for recurring attempts.
This verification sequence reflects the fact that the agent, merchant, payment platform and issuer can maintain separate records. No single universal checklist applies to every agent or payment rail.

What to do when a control is missing or the charge continues
The disconnect option is missing
Check whether you are signed into the account that originally authorized the connection. In a business or platform-managed account, an administrator may have to disconnect it. Contact the agent provider with the account identifier and request revocation of provider access, then contact the payment platform that shows the authorization. Keep the request and its timestamp.
The payment method cannot be removed
Read the billing page for a default-method, active-subscription, auto-reload or unpaid-invoice requirement. Cancel recurring services and settle or challenge legitimate invoices before trying again. If the service still refuses removal, ask support to remove the method and confirm that it cannot be used for new charges.
A charge arrives after disconnection
Compare the charge date with the disconnect and cancellation confirmations. It may be a previously authorized transaction, a final invoice, a recurring authorization that was not cancelled or an unrelated merchant using the same card. Ask the merchant to identify the authorization, notify the issuer if you did not approve it and provide the saved evidence.
The platform says it cannot disconnect you
That usually indicates a platform-controlled account. Request that the administering platform initiate the disconnection, and ask what data, payment permissions and pending transactions remain. If the platform will not act and you see unauthorized activity, escalate to the card issuer or bank rather than relying on the platform’s support queue.
The agent may still have information
Disconnection can stop future access without deleting information already copied or shared. Ask the agent and connected provider what deletion or data-retention options exist, but do not assume that deleting the app erases records held by another provider. Review the provider’s privacy and account-closure controls separately from payment revocation.
Payment-method-specific decision guide
| If the agent used… | Primary action | Additional action | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| A saved credit card | Disconnect the agent, remove the saved card and cancel the merchant subscription. | Ask the issuer about a lock, replacement or dispute for suspicious charges. | Disconnect and cancellation confirmations plus the statement line. |
| A saved debit card | Disconnect and remove the method; cancel any recurring merchant billing. | Report unauthorized activity quickly because debit procedures differ from credit-card billing disputes. | Bank case number and the date you reported the transaction. |
| An automatic bank-account debit | Revoke authorization with the company and cancel the underlying service. | Tell the bank or credit union and request a stop-payment order if needed. | Revocation notice, bank confirmation and the merchant’s cancellation record. |
| A payment-platform connection | Disconnect the agent and revoke the platform authorization where the dashboard permits it. | Ask the platform to disconnect a platform-controlled account. | Authorization-page screenshot and support correspondence. |
Account hardening after revocation
After access is removed, change the password for the account the agent used if you shared credentials or suspect they were exposed. Enable multifactor authentication, review active sessions and revoke unused API keys or service tokens. Remove old team members and integrations, and give future agents only the minimum permissions needed for their task. Enable bank and merchant alerts for every transaction, auto-reload and subscription renewal.
Do not send a full card number, security code or bank login to an agent’s support chat. Use the issuer’s phone number or secure banking channel for disputes and replacement cards. If a support representative asks for information outside the provider’s normal verification process, stop and contact the provider through its published account page.
Key limits to remember
- Disconnecting an agent prevents or limits future access; it does not automatically undo completed transactions.
- Removing a saved card is not subscription cancellation and does not reverse a charge.
- Stopping a bank debit does not end the contract or erase a legitimate balance.
- Recurring authorizations can survive an app disconnect, depending on the service’s terms and payment setup.
- Previously shared data may remain with the agent or provider after disconnection.
- Payment-dispute deadlines depend on the payment rail, issuer and jurisdiction. CFPB guidance is U.S.-specific, and its credit-card 60-day notice rule is not a universal deadline.
- A replacement card is a response to compromised card details, not a replacement for disconnecting the agent and cancelling billing.
Sources and current-label caveat
Provider dashboards change labels and placement. Use the current controls shown in your account, and preserve a confirmation of each action. The OpenAI help pages cover ChatGPT app disconnection and payment-method removal; Stripe’s support and GB consumer terms describe platform-controlled connections and one service-specific disconnection effect; CFPB pages provide U.S. guidance for unauthorized transactions, automatic debits, hacked card data and credit-card disputes. Their procedures do not create one universal process for every AI agent, payment provider or country.
