Disconnecting an AI agent is a two-part job: first remove the account inside the agent, then revoke the agent’s authorization in the email, storage, code-hosting, or identity service it used. Finally, check for separate API keys, app-specific passwords, mailbox delegation, and organization-level approvals. Removing only one of these controls can leave another route open.

The exact labels vary—Remove access, Disconnect, Revoke, or Authorized apps—but the sequence below works across the major providers.

What revoking access actually does

An AI agent normally reaches your mail, files, or other accounts through a provider authorization or credential. The agent may show a friendly connection name, while the provider records a different application name. Find the actual app name in the provider’s authorization list before removing anything. Record the account address, connection date, displayed scopes, and any workspace or tenant name; those details help distinguish two similarly named integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two independent control points:

  • Agent-side connection: disconnecting the account in the AI product stops that product from using the connection according to its own documentation.
  • Provider-side authorization: revoking the grant at Google, Apple, Dropbox, GitHub, Microsoft, or another provider invalidates the permission at its source.

Do both. A product can lose its local connection while an active provider grant remains available for a later reconnect, support tool, or another component. Conversely, revoking the provider grant may leave a stale connection entry in the agent until you remove it there.

OAuth revocation also does not prove that every other credential has been removed. An agent might have been configured with an API key, an Apple app-specific password, a mailbox delegation, or an organization-approved application. Treat each as a separate item to locate and disable. Revocation prevents future authorized calls; it does not automatically delete messages, files, repository content, or data the agent may already have copied.

Quick comparison: where each control lives

Service or account type Primary revocation location Permission detail to inspect Special caveat
Google Account Google Account security settings, under third-party app access Connected application and granted scopes Google’s OAuth token-revocation mechanism removes previously granted authorization.
Apple Account and iCloud account.apple.com → Sign-In and Security → Account Data Sharing App shown beside the sharing permission An app-specific password, if used for mail, calendar, or contacts, must be revoked separately.
Dropbox dropbox.com → Settings → Apps Selected files, an app folder, or full Dropbox The displayed scope tells you how much data the app could reach.
GitHub personal account Settings → Applications → Authorized GitHub Apps Authorized app and repositories or account resources it can access Organization approval is a separate control from your personal authorization.
Microsoft 365 or other managed work account Microsoft Entra administrator controls and app-governance tools Application grant, users, and tenant policies Emergency revocation can take time to become effective; one security product action does not universally revoke every Microsoft 365 permission.

Use four questions when comparing any provider: Where is the grant managed? It may be in the agent, your personal account, or an administrator console. What scope is visible? Some services show selected files or repositories, while others show broader account permissions. Are alternate credentials present? A password or key can bypass the app list. Can revocation be delayed? Managed environments may need time to invalidate tokens and propagate policy changes.

Use this safe revocation sequence

  1. Identify the exact connection. Write down the AI agent, the account it used, the provider, and the app name shown in the provider’s security or authorization page. If the account belongs to work or school, ask an administrator to identify the grant when it is not visible to you.
  2. Check dependencies before disconnecting. Determine whether the connection powers scheduled jobs, shared inbox automations, file synchronizations, or other team workflows. Disconnecting a shared account can interrupt those processes; arrange a replacement connection or maintenance window first.
  3. Disconnect the account in the AI agent. Open the product’s connection, integrations, or account settings, select the linked provider, and choose its disconnect or remove option. Confirm the status changes to disconnected rather than merely hiding the account from a dashboard.
  4. Revoke the provider authorization. Use the provider-specific instructions below. Remove the app or grant, not just an individual file, message, or repository, unless you deliberately want to keep the integration.
  5. Remove alternate credentials. Search the agent configuration, secret store, and provider settings for API keys, app-specific passwords, delegated mailbox access, service accounts, or organization approvals created for the same workflow.
  6. Verify both sides. Return to the provider’s connected-app list and confirm the grant is no longer listed or is marked removed. Then check the AI product’s connection page and any job history for a disconnected state. Providers do not all offer the same confirmation screen, so record what each service shows.

Disconnect the account in the AI agent first

In the agent product, look for menus named Connections, Integrations, Connected accounts, or Settings. Select the account and use Disconnect, Remove access, or the equivalent control. The product documentation explains what happens to queued jobs, cached data, and shared workflows; those effects are product-specific. If several agents use the same provider account, identify each connection rather than assuming one disconnect removes all of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save a copy of the connection details before removal if an administrator will need to investigate. Note the scopes, account owner, and time of the last successful job, but do not copy or circulate access tokens. The agent-side action is not a substitute for provider revocation. Guidance for connecting and disconnecting accounts describes these as separate operations: one removes the product’s connection, while the other invalidates authorization with the provider. See the documented distinction at AI Agent Docs.

Revoke Google access

Open your Google Account and go to its Security area. Find the section for third-party apps or connections, select the application used by the agent, review the listed permissions, and choose the option to remove access. Google’s navigation labels can change, so use the current security page rather than relying on an old deep link.

If the agent used Google OAuth, removing the app authorization revokes the grant and its tokens. Google’s developer documentation explains token revocation and user authorization at Google’s OAuth 2.0 documentation. If you see more than one similarly named app, match the entry to the date, account, and scopes recorded during setup. Removing the wrong entry can disable an unrelated workflow. For a managed Google Workspace account, an administrator may need to remove an organization-level application grant even after your personal connection is disconnected.

Revoke Apple Account and iCloud access

Apple’s current path is:

  1. Sign in at account.apple.com.
  2. Choose Sign-In and Security.
  3. Open Account Data Sharing.
  4. Find the app and select Remove access.

Apple states that after removal the app cannot access the shared data until you authorize it again. The procedure and the app-specific-password warning are documented in Apple’s third-party app access instructions.

If the agent was configured for iCloud Mail, Calendar, or Contacts with an app-specific password, revoke that password as a second action. Removing Account Data Sharing alone does not account for a separately issued password. Do not assume the password’s label will match the agent’s brand; inspect the list of passwords associated with the Apple Account. If you cannot tell which password belongs to the integration, document the setup and revoke the suspected credential rather than leaving an unknown password active.

Revoke Dropbox access and inspect its scope

Dropbox provides a useful permission view because it distinguishes how much of the account an app could reach:

  • Selected files: access is limited to files you chose.
  • An app folder: the integration works inside a designated folder.
  • Full Dropbox: the app can reach the entire Dropbox, subject to the permissions shown.

To disconnect the app:

  1. Sign in at dropbox.com.
  2. Open Settings, then choose Apps.
  3. Select the app to inspect its permissions.
  4. Use the arrow beside the app and choose Disconnect.

Dropbox documents both the procedure and these access patterns in How To Manage Third-Party Apps On Dropbox. If the app had full-Dropbox access, review sensitive folders and shared links after revocation; the disconnect removes the app’s authorization, but it does not undo files the agent may already have copied or changed. A selected-file grant is narrower, but still check whether those files were shared onward by a workflow.

Revoke GitHub access

Personal GitHub authorization

For a personal account, open GitHub Settings, choose Applications, and open the Authorized GitHub Apps tab. Review the app and select Revoke. GitHub’s procedure is documented at Reviewing and revoking authorization of GitHub Apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the app’s listed repositories, organization resources, and account permissions before revoking. If the agent was connected to multiple GitHub accounts, repeat the review for each account; removing one personal authorization does not affect another account. A repository-level installation or organization app may remain even when the personal OAuth entry is gone.

Organization resources

GitHub treats organization approval separately from your personal authorization. An organization owner can uninstall an app from the organization, and owners can deny a previously approved OAuth app through the organization’s policy controls. The owner workflow is described in GitHub’s organization OAuth guidance.

If you can revoke your personal authorization but the app still appears to have organization access, contact an owner. A personal user setting cannot override an organization policy or installation that the owner controls. Ask the owner to confirm whether the app was installed, approved, or both; those are distinct administrative decisions.

Handle Microsoft 365 and other managed accounts

Work and school accounts often use Microsoft Entra or another central identity system. If you cannot remove the application grant yourself, involve the administrator rather than repeatedly disconnecting the agent. Provide the app name, affected user, tenant, scopes, and the time of the suspected access so the administrator can locate the correct grant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s emergency guidance notes that there may be a delay between starting revocation and its taking effect, depending on the environment and token patterns. Administrators should follow the current procedure in Microsoft’s emergency user-access revocation guidance and verify the resulting sign-in and application status. During that interval, treat the credential as potentially usable and prioritize disabling exposed secrets and investigating activity.

Security products do not all expose the same controls. Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps documentation distinguishes Google Workspace and Salesforce revocation from Microsoft 365 app controls; do not assume that one Defender action universally removes every Microsoft 365 application permission. The limitations and product-specific actions are described in Microsoft’s app-governance alert documentation. In a school or company tenant, an administrator may also need to review consent policies, enterprise applications, and service accounts.

Look for credentials that OAuth revocation does not cover

After removing the visible app grant, inspect the agent’s setup and the provider for other access paths:

  • API keys: disable or rotate a key created for the agent, then update or delete it in the agent’s secret store. Rotation without removing the old key is incomplete if the provider leaves both keys valid.
  • App-specific passwords: Apple documents these as separate credentials for supported third-party mail, calendar, and contacts setups. Revoke the specific password if one exists.
  • Mailbox delegation: remove delegated access or shared-mailbox permissions granted directly to the agent account.
  • Service accounts and organization grants: ask an administrator to remove tenant-wide consent, an installed app, or a service account that can act independently of your personal authorization.
  • Stored sessions or tokens: follow the provider’s session and token invalidation controls when the service exposes them, especially after an emergency or an unknown credential.

These checks matter because a revoked OAuth grant only addresses that grant. It does not establish that a separately issued secret, delegated permission, or administrative approval has disappeared. Search the agent’s secret store, deployment variables, automation platform, and documentation for duplicate credentials, while avoiding exposure of the secret values themselves.

Confirm that access is really gone

Use a short evidence checklist after each revocation:

  • The agent’s connection page shows disconnected, removed, or an equivalent inactive state.
  • The provider’s authorized-app or account-sharing page no longer lists the app, or shows the grant as revoked.
  • Any API key, app-specific password, delegation, or organization approval associated with the workflow is disabled or removed.
  • Scheduled jobs and shared automations no longer run under the old connection.
  • For a work or school account, an administrator confirms the grant and relevant tokens were handled.

Do not treat a successful sign-out as proof of authorization removal. Sign-out ends a session; revocation removes the application’s permission. Likewise, deleting an agent project may not remove a provider grant that was created earlier. Providers do not promise a universal audit screen, so retain screenshots or administrator confirmation where your incident process requires evidence.

Common problems and what to do

The app is not listed

Search for the provider-side application name rather than the agent’s marketing name. Check every account profile in the browser, including personal and work identities. If the agent used an API key, app-specific password, or delegated mailbox, it may never appear in the OAuth app list; use the alternate-credential checks instead.

The agent reconnects after revocation

Disconnect the account again in the agent, remove saved credentials from its secret store, and inspect shared workflows for another owner or service account. A second automation may be creating a new authorization with the same provider. Check whether a scheduled job still has permission to initiate a fresh consent flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Access appears to continue immediately after an administrator revokes it

Microsoft notes that emergency revocation can take time to propagate because of environment complexity and token behavior. Ask the administrator to verify the grant, token status, and sign-in activity rather than assuming the first failed attempt was permanent or that continued activity is expected.

A shared workflow stops unexpectedly

That usually means the connection was being used by more than the agent you were viewing. Restore service only after identifying the dependent job and replacing the old credential with an intentionally scoped account. Do not reauthorize the original agent just to make an unexplained automation work.

You removed access but the data is still present

Provider revocation stops new authorized requests; it does not erase copies, exports, cached responses, modified files, or messages already created. Review the agent’s retention and deletion controls, shared destinations, and provider activity logs. If sensitive data may have been copied, escalate instead of assuming revocation alone completed the cleanup.

When to escalate

Contact an administrator or the provider’s security team when you cannot identify the grant, the app has organization-wide access, sensitive data may have been copied, or revocation controls are unavailable. Preserve the app name, scopes, account, timestamps, and any job logs before changing more settings. Those details let an administrator distinguish a personal OAuth grant from an enterprise installation or a separate credential.

If you suspect misuse rather than a routine cleanup, prioritize provider-side revocation and credential disablement, then review account activity according to the provider’s incident process. The goal is to invalidate every usable path, not merely remove an icon from the AI product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is disconnecting the AI agent enough?

No. Disconnect the account in the agent and revoke the corresponding authorization in the provider’s connected-app or account-sharing settings. Then check API keys, app-specific passwords, mailbox delegation, service accounts, and organization grants.

What if I do not recognize the app name?

Compare the provider entry’s account, date, scopes, and organization with the agent setup. Search for the provider-side application name, which may differ from the agent’s brand. If it still cannot be identified, ask the provider or your administrator before removing an unrelated integration.

Will revocation delete files or emails the agent already accessed?

Usually not. Revocation blocks future authorized access; it does not automatically erase copies, exports, cached data, messages, or file changes. Review the agent’s retention controls and the affected provider’s activity history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I revoke access from a work or school account myself?

Sometimes, but managed tenants may restrict user control. Give an administrator the app name, user, tenant, scopes, and suspected access time so they can review the grant and tokens. Microsoft notes that emergency revocation may take time to take effect.

Why is the app gone from my personal settings but still able to reach an organization?

Personal authorization and organization approval are separate controls. A GitHub organization owner, Microsoft Entra administrator, or other tenant administrator may need to uninstall the app, deny consent, or remove the enterprise grant.

Does signing out revoke an AI agent’s permission?

No. Signing out ends a session, while revocation removes the application’s authorization. Perform both the agent-side disconnect and provider-side removal.

What should I do if the agent reconnects?

Remove saved keys or passwords, inspect shared workflows and service accounts, and check whether another automation is creating a new consent. Revoke the new provider grant rather than repeatedly hiding the connection in the agent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there anything to buy to revoke access?

No. Provider-side revocation is performed in account, application, or administrator settings. A security key, password manager, or storage device does not perform that action.

The Bottom Line

Use a two-layer shutdown: disconnect the account in the AI agent, revoke its authorization at the provider, and separately disable every API key, app-specific password, delegation, service account, or organization grant tied to the workflow. Verify both dashboards, allow for administrator-propagation delays, and escalate when data may already have been copied.
