To revoke an AI agent’s access, identify the app and credentials it uses, then remove or block those credentials in each service—not just the agent process. Google Workspace app controls and user-granted OAuth tokens are separate; Slack offers single-token revocation or whole-app removal; GitHub actions depend on whether the credential is an OAuth grant, a GitHub App authorization or installation, or another token. Record the identity and scope affected, and verify access separately from reporting views that may update later.

Before revoking access, identify every credential and its scope

An agent may connect to a service using an OAuth grant, a Slack bot or user token, a GitHub OAuth app authorization, a GitHub App user authorization or installation, or another credential such as a personal access token. One agent may have more than one connection, account, or installation. Removing the agent software or turning off its runtime does not, by itself, revoke credentials already granted to a platform.

  1. Identify the integration. Find the app name and, where available, its client ID, workspace or organization, and the account that authorized it. Match the entry in the service’s administration view to the agent you intend to contain.
  2. Classify its credentials. Determine whether access comes from a user-granted OAuth token, an app installation, a bot or user token, or another credential. Do not assume a button that removes one authorization also removes credentials of other types.
  3. Choose the narrowest effective scope. A single-token or user-level action may be appropriate for one exposed credential. A block, uninstall, denial, or suspension can affect every user or resource within its configured scope.
  4. Preserve incident details. Record the app, identity, credential type, action, scope, time, and resulting status. Review relevant security or audit logs as part of incident handling, but do not assume every product edition records every action in the same way.

Keep a short inventory as you work: list each service, the account or organization involved, the credential type, the action taken, and what remains to verify. This helps distinguish containment of one exposed token from removal of every route the agent can use. If the integration has separate user authorizations or app installations, treat each as a separate item to check rather than assuming the first change covers them all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When speed matters, prioritize the action that stops the relevant access at the needed scope, then follow up on related grants and installations. A broad app block or uninstall may interrupt legitimate workflows that share the integration; a narrow token revocation may leave other credentials active. The appropriate choice depends on what is compromised and what resources must be contained.

Google Workspace: block the app or revoke a user’s token

Google Workspace has two related but distinct controls: an administrator can set an app’s access policy, and an appropriately privileged administrator can review or revoke third-party OAuth tokens granted by users. Choose based on the incident. Blocking an app is an app-policy action; it should not be confused with reviewing an individual user’s existing grant.

Review and block an app in the Admin console

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console with an account that has the Security settings administrator privilege. Google lists this privilege in its administrator privilege definitions.
  2. Go to Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage App Access.
  3. Review both Configured apps and Accessed apps. The Accessed apps list shows users, requested Google services, and scopes, which can help you identify which account and data access are involved.
  4. Select the agent’s app and change its access setting to Blocked to prevent the app from accessing Google data. Apply the policy to the whole organization or to selected organizational units, according to the containment scope you need.
  5. Separately review the affected user’s third-party OAuth grants and revoke the relevant token when the incident calls for removing that existing authorization. Google documents administrator privileges for reviewing and revoking user-granted third-party OAuth tokens; the app-policy setting and token-revocation procedure are not interchangeable.

Use the scope deliberately. An organization-wide block is broader than applying the policy to selected organizational units. Conversely, a policy scoped to only part of the organization may not contain access for users outside those units. The app policy controls whether the app can access Google data within the selected scope; it does not replace the need to identify and address a particular user’s existing grant when that is part of the incident.

Google says access changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect. The Accessed apps reporting list is updated 48 hours after a token is granted or revoked, so it is not a real-time confirmation of whether access still works. Check the policy and grant directly, and do not treat a stale list as proof either that revocation failed or that it succeeded. See Google’s Control which apps access Google Workspace data guidance for the controls and timing.

Google Workspace Admin Help also explains a separate Restricted-services behavior: “If you change access to Restricted, any previously installed apps that you haven’t trusted stop working, and tokens are revoked.” That statement applies to the Restricted-service control described by Google; it should not be read as the effect of every app setting change.

Google also documents automatic OAuth 2.0 token revocation after a password change for tokens accessing certain products. This is a limited behavior, not a substitute for explicitly reviewing and revoking the agent’s grants. The details are in Google’s automatic OAuth 2.0 token revocation upon password change guidance.

Slack: revoke one token or uninstall the whole app

In Slack, first determine whether the exposed credential is one API access token or whether you need to remove the app from the workspace. These are different scopes: revoking a token is targeted, while uninstalling the app removes the app and revokes all its tokens.

Revoke a single API token

  1. Use Slack’s auth.revoke API method with the token you intend to revoke.
  2. Check the response’s revoked boolean to confirm the method reports that the token was revoked.
  3. Check the integration for other tokens or configurations that may still grant access. A successful response for one token is not confirmation that every credential associated with the agent has been removed.

Slack documents that revoking a token can remove the bot user, slash commands under the documented condition, and incoming webhooks associated with the bot token. Account for those effects before choosing this narrower action, especially if the same bot supports other workspace workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the app from a workspace

  1. Choose app-wide removal when the goal is to remove the app from the workspace rather than revoke only a particular token.
  2. Use Slack’s apps.uninstall method, or have a workspace member or administrator remove the app through workspace administration.
  3. Verify the app is no longer installed and that the affected integration can no longer authenticate. If the agent was configured in more than one workspace, review each workspace separately.

Uninstalling is a broader containment decision than revoking one token: Slack documents that it removes the app from the workspace and revokes all its tokens. Consider whether other workflows depend on that app before using the workspace-wide action. If the issue concerns a single credential and other app functions should remain, the single-token route is the more targeted option—but check for any other tokens or configurations afterward.

Slack’s OAuth installation guide describes revocation when a workspace owner fully uninstalls an app, when a user individually removes their configurations, or when the account that initially authenticated the app is deactivated. Those situations have different effects; do not substitute account deactivation for a deliberate check of the app and its tokens. Slack states in that guide that “OAuth tokens do not expire.” Waiting for expiration is therefore not a revocation plan. Its developer FAQ also distinguishes using auth.revoke for one token from using apps.uninstall for complete app removal.

GitHub: match the action to the credential type

GitHub has several credential types, and the right revocation path depends on which one the agent uses. GitHub’s credential types reference distinguishes OAuth app access tokens, GitHub App user access tokens, GitHub App refresh tokens, GitHub App installation tokens, personal access tokens, deploy keys, and Actions GITHUB_TOKEN. An action against one type does not automatically revoke the others.

Start by identifying which category applies and whose or what resources it covers. A user’s authorization is not the same thing as an installation of a GitHub App, and neither should be assumed to cover a personal access token, deploy key, or Actions token. For organization containment, make sure the selected action addresses organization resources; an individual user’s personal authorization and an organization owner’s control of app access have different scopes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OAuth app authorization granted by a user

The user can revoke the OAuth app authorization in their personal settings. If an organization must contain the app’s access to its resources, an organization owner can deny the OAuth app access to the organization. These controls address different scopes: a user’s grant and an organization’s access policy.

GitHub’s REST API also supports deleting an OAuth app authorization for a specific user. GitHub says this deletes all OAuth tokens associated with that application for that user. The endpoint requires the app’s client ID and a valid access token. Use the REST API endpoints for OAuth authorizations documentation to confirm the endpoint and requirements for the current API version before acting.

That API operation is specific to the OAuth app authorization for the named user; do not treat it as a universal agent shutdown. If the agent also uses a GitHub App installation or a separate credential type, identify and handle those paths independently. Likewise, denying an OAuth app access to an organization addresses that organization’s resources, not necessarily the user’s authorization everywhere.

GitHub App user authorization or installation

A user can revoke their authorization of a GitHub App. GitHub notes that user revocation applies across all organizations, not just one. If the objective is to stop a GitHub App from accessing an organization’s resources, an organization or enterprise owner can suspend or uninstall the app. Do not treat those owner actions as direct revocation of a member’s user authorization: they prevent the app’s access to organization resources through the app action.

Choose between user revocation and organization or enterprise action based on the intended scope. The user-level action has a wider reach across organizations for that user, while an owner’s suspension or uninstall is the documented route to prevent the app from accessing organization resources. If one organization is affected, verify the organization-resource access directly rather than assuming that an owner can revoke a member’s personal GitHub App authorization.

Other GitHub credentials

If the agent uses a personal access token, deploy key, Actions GITHUB_TOKEN, or another credential, use the response path for that credential rather than assuming that revoking an OAuth authorization or uninstalling a GitHub App will invalidate it. Establish whether the credential is limited to a user, repository, organization, or installation before removing it. GitHub’s enterprise incident-response guidance organizes response actions by credential type and user or organization scope; consult it for the applicable case: Revoking authorizations or deleting credentials in your enterprise.

The main operational differences are the unit being revoked and the effects of the action. Google Workspace offers an app policy at organizational scope as well as a distinct user-grant review and revocation path. Slack distinguishes one token from removing the app and all its tokens in a workspace. GitHub requires credential identification before choosing among user, organization, or enterprise actions. Only Google’s cited guidance gives a specific propagation and reporting delay here; for Slack and GitHub, do not assume an undocumented delay or treat a console view as instant confirmation.

Verify that access is actually revoked

After taking action in each service, verify the control you changed and test the integration from the perspective of the affected credential, where feasible. A policy view, an API response, and an access-reporting list answer different questions: whether a policy is configured, whether one token was revoked, and what the service’s reporting view currently shows. Avoid treating any one of them as universal proof that every path used by the agent has been removed.

  • Check for additional user accounts, workspaces, organizational units, organizations, installations, or credentials that belong to the same agent.
  • For Google Workspace, allow for the documented policy and reporting delays; use the app control and the relevant user grant rather than relying on the Accessed apps list alone.
  • For Slack, distinguish a response confirming one token’s revocation from workspace-wide app removal, and account for the bot features or webhooks that may stop working.
  • For GitHub, verify the specific OAuth grant, GitHub App authorization or installation, or other credential that was identified. Confirm the intended organization-resource scope separately from a user’s personal authorization.
  • Keep a record of the action, target identity, scope, time, verification result, and any service disruption. Preserve relevant evidence and review the applicable security or audit logs without assuming identical event coverage across editions.

For a final review, compare the credential inventory from the start of the process with the actions and results recorded for each entry. A Google app block, a Slack token revocation, and a GitHub organization-level app action are not interchangeable evidence: each confirms only the type and scope of control it addresses. Note pending Google timing separately from confirmed changes, and record any unresolved credential or installation so it can be handled through the applicable platform control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does deleting or disabling the AI agent revoke its access to Google Workspace, Slack, and GitHub?

No. Turning off or removing the agent process does not, by itself, revoke credentials already granted to a platform. Identify the app and credential type, then remove or block the authorization in each service where it is used.

How long does Google Workspace access revocation take to show up?

Google says app access changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect. The Accessed apps reporting list updates 48 hours after a token is granted or revoked, so a stale list is not real-time proof of success or failure.

Should I revoke a Slack token or uninstall the app?

Use Slack’s auth.revoke to revoke one API token and check the response’s revoked boolean. Use apps.uninstall or workspace administration when the goal is to remove the app from that workspace and revoke all its tokens. Revoking a token can affect its bot user, certain slash commands, and associated incoming webhooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Slack OAuth tokens expire if I wait?

Slack Developer Documentation says, “OAuth tokens do not expire.” Do not rely on waiting for expiration; use the supported token-revocation or app-removal action appropriate to the scope.

Can a GitHub organization owner revoke a member’s GitHub App user authorization?

The cited GitHub guidance distinguishes these actions. A user can revoke their GitHub App authorization, and that revocation applies across organizations. An organization or enterprise owner can suspend or uninstall the app to prevent access to organization resources; that is not direct revocation of the member’s user authorization.

Will revoking one GitHub authorization remove every credential an agent uses?

No. GitHub distinguishes OAuth app tokens, GitHub App user and refresh tokens, installation tokens, personal access tokens, deploy keys, and Actions GITHUB_TOKEN. Identify each credential and use the response path for its type and scope.

The Bottom Line

To revoke an AI agent’s access, identify every app and credential, then take the platform-specific action at the right user, workspace, organization, or enterprise scope. Google app blocking and user-token revocation are distinct; Slack distinguishes one token from full workspace app removal; GitHub requires matching the action to the credential type. Verify each result, account for Google’s documented delays, and do not mistake disabling the agent—or a delayed reporting view—for proof that every grant is gone.
