Before your first day, check each social account separately: what a stranger can see on your profile, who can see old and new posts, what appears when you are tagged, and how people can find or contact you. Use each platform’s current privacy controls, then view your profile as a visitor would. These steps can reduce exposure, but they cannot control copies other people have made or guarantee what an employer can access.
1. Check what your profile shows to the public
Start with the parts of each account that may be visible without a connection or login: your name, photo, bio, location, work and education history, connections or followers, and public photos or videos. CareerOneStop recommends limiting public visibility and listing only information, comments, posts, photos, connections, and videos you would be comfortable with an employer seeing (CareerOneStop’s social media guidance).
Use the platform’s profile preview or public-view option, if available, and inspect the profile while signed out or from an account that is not connected to you. Check that the visible details are accurate and that you are comfortable with the impression they create. Do this on every service you use; one platform’s privacy setting does not change another account.
2. Review older posts and set an audience for future ones
Look through older posts, photos, videos, comments, and other content that may still be visible. Where a platform offers an audience control for existing posts, use it to limit exposure where appropriate. Then check the default audience for new posts so you do not accidentally publish to everyone.

On Facebook, Meta’s audience selector lets you choose who can see a status, photo, or other post. The selector is separate from profile visibility, so review both rather than assuming one setting covers everything. Meta’s Safety Center describes these controls.
3. Check tags and content on other people’s profiles
Review tag review and timeline review, where available. These controls can help you decide whether tagged material appears on your own profile, but they do not remove a post from the person who published it. Meta notes that people tagged in a post, and their friends, may also be able to see it depending on the post’s audience (Meta Safety Center).

If you find something on someone else’s profile that concerns you, ask that person to remove it or change its audience. Approval settings affect what is shown on your profile; they are not a general takedown mechanism for other people’s posts.
4. Review who can find or contact you
Check each service’s settings for discovery by email address or phone number, search-engine visibility, profile visibility, and who can send invitations or messages. Consider whether public contact details or profile fields are necessary. Labels and menu paths change, so use the current in-app settings rather than relying on an old walkthrough.

Facebook’s Privacy Checkup is one place to begin reviewing selected privacy and security options. It is a starting point, not a single switch that governs every part of an account. Meta describes it alongside audience and tag controls in its Safety Center.
5. Remember what privacy settings cannot do
An audience setting limits who can view content through that platform’s controls; it does not ensure that information is never retained, copied, shared, or analyzed. Other users may save or redistribute material they can access. Platforms or third parties may also analyze information such as metadata. Meta’s Privacy and You explains why audience choices do not eliminate those broader data uses.

For that reason, treat settings as a way to reduce routine visibility, not as a guarantee of confidentiality. Avoid posting information you would not want copied or circulated beyond its intended audience.

Read the terms and privacy notices for accounts or enterprise services your employer provides. LinkedIn’s Privacy Policy says an employer may review use of LinkedIn enterprise services it provides. The policy also says job searches and personal messages are not shown to an employer unless you choose to share them through LinkedIn (LinkedIn Privacy Policy). These statements concern LinkedIn’s described services and should not be generalized to every workplace tool or platform.

7. Know the employment-law context
In the United States, employers may seek social-media information when considering a person’s background. The FTC and EEOC explain that employment decisions based on background information must comply with federal laws that protect applicants and employees from discrimination (FTC and EEOC: Background Checks: What Employers Need to Know). Changing privacy settings does not determine what an employer is legally allowed to consider and is not a legal shield. Outside the United States, consult the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
