Before you dispose of an old laptop, back up the files you need, erase your personal data using instructions for that laptop, and check that the drop-off site accepts the computer and its battery. A working machine may be suitable for donation or resale; an unusable one should go through an electronics recycling program. Keep lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them out of household garbage and municipal recycling.
This guidance is U.S.-focused. Collection rules, fees, shipping requirements, and accepted battery conditions vary by location and provider, so confirm the current instructions before you drop off or mail a laptop.
Decide whether to reuse the laptop or recycle it
If the laptop still works, consider whether an upgrade could meet your needs before replacing the computer. A usable laptop may also be donated or resold, extending its useful life. Describe its condition accurately and confirm that the recipient accepts it. If it cannot reasonably be reused, choose a suitable electronics recycling route. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) discusses reuse and recycling as ways to conserve resources: Electronics Donation and Recycling.
Prepare your data before handing it over
- Back up files you want to keep. Copy them to another storage device or a trusted backup service, and check that the files you need are accessible before erasing the laptop.
- Sign out of accounts and remove removable storage. Check for SD cards, USB drives, and other removable media, and take them out.
- Erase personal information. Use the device maker’s instructions for your laptop and operating system. The steps depend on the device, operating system, and storage medium; simply deleting files may not be equivalent to securely erasing the drive. HP recommends backing up files and erasing the drive before recycling: How to recycle a laptop. The EPA also advises deleting personal information before donation or recycling.
Do not hand over a computer until you have confirmed that needed files are backed up and that you have followed the appropriate erasure instructions.

Possible routes include local or state electronics programs, a manufacturer or retailer take-back program, a donation organization, or an electronics recycler. Check that the specific location accepts laptops and ask whether it takes the device with its battery installed. Programs may differ in eligibility, fees, shipping rules, and handling of batteries.
The EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as accredited electronics-recycling certification standards. Certification can be one factor when selecting a recycler; also check its data-handling practices, battery requirements, local availability, and any fees. EPA listings are not endorsements of individual services. See Certified Electronics Recyclers and Electronics Donation and Recycling.

Keep lithium-ion batteries out of household trash and recycling
The EPA’s consumer guidance is explicit: “Lithium-ion batteries and devices containing these batteries should NOT go in household garbage or recycling bins.” Damaged or crushed batteries can create a fire risk in waste and recycling streams. Use an appropriate battery collection or household hazardous-waste option instead, and check the site’s instructions: Used Lithium-Ion Batteries.
If the battery is removable
Only remove a battery if the manufacturer permits it and it is designed to be user-removable. The EPA advises recycling a separated lithium-ion battery separately. Follow the collection site’s handling instructions; EPA guidance includes taping battery terminals and/or placing a separated battery in its own plastic bag.

If the battery is built in
Do not try to remove a battery that is not user-serviceable. Ask an accepting electronics recycler or take-back provider whether it will accept the laptop with the battery installed.
If the battery is damaged
Contact the manufacturer for specific handling instructions and tell the collection provider about the damage before bringing or shipping the laptop. Do not assume that an ordinary drop-off or mail-in program accepts damaged batteries.

Why responsible recycling matters
Recycling can recover materials and avoid some environmental impacts of disposal. The EPA reports a historical estimate attributed to the U.S. Geological Survey: recycling one million laptops was equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 U.S. homes in a year. This is a 2006 estimate, not a current per-laptop impact figure.
