Give an AI agent access only to the files and capabilities it needs for its task. Start with the narrowest control your computer provides: limit file and app permissions, use a separate standard account or isolated workspace when possible, and turn off network or write access that is not necessary. Review and revoke access afterward. These safeguards reduce the damage an agent can cause if it acts unexpectedly; they do not guarantee that it will follow your instructions.
Start by defining what the agent needs
Before changing settings, make a short access list for the task. Identify the files or folder the agent needs, whether it must edit or only read them, which apps or system capabilities are necessary, and whether it needs an internet connection. Then grant only that access. Avoid giving an agent administrator privileges or access to an entire drive for a task confined to one project folder.
- Files: Choose a dedicated project folder or the smallest set of files that will work.
- Write access: Prefer read-only access if the agent only needs to inspect or summarize files.
- Apps and capabilities: Allow accessibility, automation, or other sensitive capabilities only when the task requires them.
- Network: Disable connectivity when the task does not need it and your isolation method allows that.
On Windows, access control determines whether an authenticated user can access an object. Folder permissions can be inherited by files and subfolders, so check inherited permissions as well as the folder’s direct settings. See Microsoft’s Access Control Overview.

Restrict an agent on macOS
Review the agent app’s privacy permissions
On macOS 10.15 and later, the system requires user consent for apps to access protected locations including Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive, and network volumes. Accessibility and automation access also require permission. Apple says apps needing full-storage access must be added explicitly in privacy settings.

On macOS 13 and later, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy. Review the permissions relevant to the agent, such as Files and Folders, Accessibility, Automation, or Full Disk Access, and turn off grants it does not need. Labels and layout can differ on earlier macOS releases. Apple’s explanation is in Controlling app access to files in macOS.
Grant access only when needed
If the agent requests access to a protected folder, consider whether the task genuinely needs that location. A request for broad storage access is not equivalent to a need for broad storage access. If the task only concerns a project, keep the relevant materials in a dedicated folder and grant no wider permission than the app and macOS controls allow.

Restrict an agent on Windows
Use a narrowly scoped workspace
Keep task files in a dedicated folder and avoid granting access to unrelated user data. Check the folder’s permissions and inheritance; a folder can pass permissions to its contents. Use a standard account for routine work rather than running an agent with administrator rights. Windows permissions are governed by the account and access rules on each file or object, as described in Microsoft’s Access Control Overview.

A separate standard or agent account can keep the agent’s access distinct from your everyday account. Microsoft’s Windows agent security overview also describes an agent workspace and revocable, explicitly provided access. Some of the agent-specific capabilities are discussed as preview exploration, so availability depends on the Windows feature and release; do not assume every Windows computer has a dedicated agent-permission switch. Use Windows Sandbox carefully
Windows Sandbox can be configured to disable networking and map host folders into the sandbox. If you use it, expose only the minimum folder needed and avoid write access when the task is read-only. Disable networking if it is unnecessary and the configuration permits it. A mapped host folder is still an exposure: Microsoft warns that “Exposing host directories might allow malicious software to affect the system or steal data.” Availability of Windows Sandbox depends on Windows version and edition. Understand developer-level AppContainer controls
AppContainer is a process-isolation mechanism for developer-managed workloads, not a universal Windows setting ordinary users can switch on for any agent. It can restrict filesystem, network, process, and window access; most system resources are denied by default, with access granted explicitly. Microsoft’s newer Create Process In Sandbox API documentation says filesystem and network restrictions require AppContainer to be enabled (app_container = true); path settings without it fail. Choose the boundary that fits the task
These controls operate at different levels; one does not automatically provide all the protections of another. Pick the least-permissive arrangement that still lets the agent do useful work.

Review access and account for prompt injection
An agent can encounter malicious instructions embedded in a document or user interface. Microsoft’s Windows agent security overview calls this cross-prompt injection: hostile content may steer an agent toward unintended actions, including data exfiltration or malware installation. Narrow permissions reduce potential impact, but they do not prove that the agent will behave as intended. Treat high-impact actions—such as sending files, deleting data, changing security settings, or installing software—as requiring human review.

When the task ends, remove temporary access you no longer need. Revisit app privacy grants, folder permissions, mapped folders, and account or workspace access. Microsoft’s Secure agents: Identity, access, and data protection, updated August 1, 2026, recommends a distinct identity, narrowly scoped access to necessary data and tools, and reviewing grants as an agent’s job changes.
