To restore an Acer Aspire easyStore H340, use its Server Recovery Disc on a separate Windows PC connected to the same wired network, then start the H340 with its rear recovery/reset button. The paper-clip button only puts the server into recovery mode; it does not reinstall Windows by itself. Choose Server Recovery to attempt OS recovery, not Factory Reset, which erases the server’s data and settings.
First identify what you need to restore
The H340 has distinct recovery paths for the server, its client PCs, and its data. Choosing the wrong disc or wizard option can put the wrong computer at risk.
| Goal | Use | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Repair the H340’s Windows Home Server installation | Server Recovery Disc/DVD and the Server Recovery option | System settings and user accounts are lost; data recovery is attempted, not guaranteed. |
| Return the H340 to factory defaults | Server Recovery Disc/DVD and Factory Reset | The server’s data and settings are erased. |
| Restore a backed-up client computer | PC Recovery Disc | This restores the client PC, not the H340. |
| Recover files from the H340 | Prioritize copying or imaging the disks rather than reinstalling the OS | Recovery attempts can jeopardize data on failing disks. |
The Acer guide describes separate Software Installation, Server Recovery, and PC Recovery media. Its Server Recovery procedure is for a corrupted server OS or failed system drive. Acer Aspire easyStore H340 User Guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Protect the data before starting
If the H340 still starts or its shares are accessible, copy irreplaceable files to another device and verify the copies before proceeding. Do not choose Factory Reset unless you have verified an independent backup or accept losing the data.

- Boost Your System’s Performance: Increase available memory for smoother multitasking, improved responsiveness and better performance when running memory-intensive applications.
- Matched Specifically to Your Machine: OFFTEK selects the correct memory configuration for the computer shown in this listing, removing the uncertainty from choosing a compatible upgrade.
- We Do the Technical Checking for You: There is no need to compare memory speeds, voltages, form factors or other technical details, as the upgrade has been matched to the machine’s supported requirements.
- Extend the Life of Your Computer: Increasing the available memory can help your existing machine remain productive for longer, offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing the complete system.
- Quick and Straightforward Upgrade: Memory is normally simple to install and requires no software installation; shut down and disconnect the machine before fitting and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- If a drive clicks, disappears, overheats, or reports read errors, stop repeated recovery attempts. Image or clone it first, or seek professional recovery if the files matter.
- Disconnect unrelated USB storage so it cannot be confused with recovery media or a backup destination.
- If you remove drives, record their positions and label them. Do not assume a drive position identifies the system disk: community reports about the first or bottom drive are not an Acer-confirmed specification for every unit.
- If the only goal is file access, do not begin with OS recovery. Removing or connecting disks safely depends on the storage format and requires a read-only approach if you want to minimize risk.
Get the correct recovery media and prepare the network
For the H340 itself, you need the Acer Aspire easyStore H340 Server Recovery Disc/DVD. The PC Recovery Disc is for restoring a client computer; the Software Installation Disc is not the server recovery disc.
Acer maintains an H340 support page, but it does not clearly expose a current downloadable recovery image. Ask Acer whether legacy media is available or look for original media through legitimate second-hand channels. Do not treat an ISO from a forum as an official Acer image; verify its provenance and licensing before considering it, and protect the existing disks first.
For the documented process, use a Windows PC with an optical drive or a way to run the utility from the disc. Connect both that PC and the H340 by Ethernet to the same router or switch. Guest Wi-Fi, VPNs, network isolation, or firewall rules can interfere with discovery.

Run Server Recovery
- Prepare the recovery PC. Insert the Server Recovery Disc. If Windows opens its contents, run
ServerRecovery Utility.exe. Follow the wizard; it may ask you to remove Acer easyStore H340 software and Windows Home Server Connector from that PC. - Shut down the H340. Hold its power button for about four seconds until it turns off.
- Start recovery mode. Press the H340 power button to turn it on. At the rear of the unit, use a straightened paper clip to press and hold the recovery/reset button in its pinhole while the server starts.
- Wait for detection. Continue in the recovery wizard on the PC when it finds the server. Community reports describe a flashing red status light followed by a flashing blue network light, but treat those patterns as field guidance rather than a guaranteed indication for every unit.
- Choose Server Recovery. The Acer guide describes this option as recovery from a system failure: settings and user accounts are lost, and data recovery will be attempted. Continue through the wizard. Do not interpret “attempted” as a promise that files will survive.
Keep the H340 connected to Ethernet throughout the process. After recovery, recreate or verify administrator credentials, user accounts, shared folders, server name and network settings, backup schedules, add-ins, remote-access settings, and client connector installations. The recovery can leave data intact while removing configuration and account information.
Use Factory Reset only if you intend to erase the server
Factory Reset erases all data and settings on the server’s hard drives, according to the Acer guide. Use it only after verifying backups, when clearing the server for another owner, repurposing its disks, or when Server Recovery has failed and data destruction is acceptable.
Enter recovery mode with the same shutdown, power-on, and rear-button procedure above. In the wizard, select Factory Reset only if you accept the erasure, then follow its prompts. It is not the safer alternative to Server Recovery.

Troubleshoot recovery problems
The H340 has no power or does not start
Check the power connection and outlet. If the unit will not power on reliably, recovery software cannot address the problem; hardware diagnosis is needed before proceeding.

The H340 starts but the wizard cannot find it
- Confirm the H340 is connected to the router or switch by Ethernet and is powered on.
- Connect the recovery PC to that same router or switch. Avoid guest networks, isolated VLANs, or Wi-Fi client isolation.
- Temporarily turn off VPN software. If discovery still fails, test with the PC firewall temporarily disabled, then re-enable it.
- Make sure the correct Ethernet adapter is active; disconnect unnecessary network adapters if practical.
- Check the router’s client list for an H340 DHCP lease. Try another Ethernet cable or router port.
- Restart the recovery PC and repeat the H340 recovery-mode startup procedure.
- Confirm the disc is the Server Recovery Disc, not the PC Recovery Disc. Try another Windows PC, preferably one compatible with the older recovery utility.
Failure to discover the H340 does not by itself prove the OS is unrecoverable. Network discovery, firewall settings, recovery media, recovery mode, or a failing disk can all be involved. Acer Community users have reported recovery-discovery issues, but those reports are not a substitute for the manual’s procedure: H340 recovery discussion.
The disc or utility will not run, or recovery fails after detection
Check that the disc is readable and that the optical drive works. Confirm you have the server disc, not client recovery media. A modern Windows environment may not work well with an old utility; testing a different compatible PC can help isolate that issue. If recovery starts and then fails, consider a damaged disc, optical drive, network interruption, or a bad system disk. Change one variable at a time rather than repeatedly trying Factory Reset.

The system disk is missing or failing
The Acer guide includes a failed main system drive among the situations Server Recovery is intended to address, but recovery media cannot repair a mechanically dead disk. If the drive is not detected, test or replace the hardware before expecting recovery to work. A new blank disk may not follow the original workflow successfully; the result can depend on disk layout, firmware state, and the available recovery media. If data matters and a drive is failing, prioritize imaging or professional recovery.
Restoring a client PC is a different procedure
If you meant a computer that was backed up to the H340, use the PC Recovery Disc, not Server Recovery. Boot the client computer from that disc, connect it to the home network using Ethernet, and follow the Restore Computer Wizard. The Acer guide says wireless is not supported for this recovery and requires the Windows Home Server administrator password. This process restores the client PC from a server backup; it does not reinstall the H340.
Should you install another operating system?
Installing a different OS is a migration project, not Acer recovery. It can sacrifice the original Windows Home Server setup and may erase disks. Before considering it, make a separate verified backup and confirm that the chosen OS supports the H340’s older hardware, boot process, storage controller, and network adapter. No compatibility guarantee is established here for Windows 10, Windows 11, current Windows Server releases, or Linux distributions.

Windows Home Server 2011 reached the end of mainstream support on April 12, 2016, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle page. Microsoft’s guidance for unsupported Windows versions is to migrate to a supported OS or replace hardware that cannot run one: What it means when Windows isn’t supported. If you keep the H340 running its original software, treat it as legacy equipment rather than a currently serviced platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore the H340 with a USB stick?
The documented Acer recovery workflow uses the Server Recovery Disc/DVD and a separate networked PC. A generic Acer USB recovery procedure is not established for the H340.
Can I use the PC Recovery Disc to reinstall the H340?
No. The PC Recovery Disc restores a client computer from a backup on the H340; Server Recovery media is for the H340 itself.
Does Server Recovery erase data?
It removes system settings and user accounts and attempts data recovery, which is not guaranteed. Factory Reset is the option that erases the server’s data and settings.
Can I install Windows 10, Windows 11, or Linux on an H340?
Compatibility is not established. Treat another OS as an unsupported migration project, back up the disks first, and verify hardware support before attempting installation.
Can I recover files without reinstalling the OS?
If files are the priority, copy accessible files or pursue a careful read-only disk recovery workflow instead of starting OS recovery. Image or seek professional help for failing drives.
