If your internet service has been suspended, there is no universal technical bypass that restores the suspended account. Contact your provider, ask why service was stopped, and get its approved steps for restoring it. If you need connectivity before that is resolved, arrange a separate active service, such as mobile data or another provider’s plan; a VPN, replacement router, or modem cannot reactivate a suspended subscription.
Find out why the service was suspended
Start with the company that provides the affected internet service. Check email, text messages, mailed notices, and the provider’s app or account portal for an explanation, then ask customer support to confirm the reason. Suspensions can involve billing or another account issue; the requirements depend on the provider and account.
Ask whether the affected connection is ordinary residential or mobile service, or service supported through the federal Lifeline program. For Lifeline, the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) identifies three common reasons service may be turned off: a subscriber did not recertify, is no longer eligible, or did not use the service. Those rules and timelines are specific to Lifeline, not a general rule for every ISP. See USAC’s My Service Was Turned Off.
- Save suspension notices, bills, payment confirmations, and any messages about eligibility or recertification.
- Ask what exact balance, document, account correction, or other action is required.
- Ask when service should return after you complete the required steps, and whether any reconnection charge applies to your account.
- Request a case or reference number and keep a record of the date and details of each conversation.
Follow the provider’s restoration process
There is no established universal reconnection fee or restoration time. The provider should tell you what applies to your account and when it expects to restore service after you meet the requirements. If the issue is a bill, ask whether the provider offers a payment arrangement. If it is an eligibility or documentation problem, confirm exactly what it needs and how to submit it.

For Lifeline-specific service interruptions, USAC advises subscribers to contact their phone or internet company to find out why service was turned off. If a subscriber loses the Lifeline benefit, USAC says they may reapply. Check the provider’s instructions and the program’s current requirements rather than assuming a payment alone will resolve a Lifeline suspension.
Know the Lifeline deadlines if they apply
USAC describes deadlines that apply to Lifeline, not to standard commercial internet accounts:

Check whether Lifeline can reduce the cost
Lifeline is federal assistance for qualifying low-income people who need phone or internet service. USAC’s current FAQ lists a standard discount of up to $9.25 per month for internet or bundled service, and an enhanced discount of up to $34.25 per month on phone, internet, or bundled service for qualifying residents of Tribal lands. The amount is a maximum benefit, not a guaranteed bill reduction; eligibility, participating providers, and service availability matter. Confirm current details with USAC and the provider. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is not a current alternative based on the available status information. A Wisconsin Public Service Commission fact sheet updated June 3, 2024, says ACP ended effective June 1, 2024, and recommends asking providers about lower-cost plans and checking Lifeline eligibility. Its figures about program funding and households losing the discount describe the program’s history, not current assistance. See the Wisconsin PSC’s ACP fact sheet.
Get a separate connection if you need internet now
A separate, authorized connection can provide access while the suspended account is unresolved, but it does not restore that account. Options may include mobile data or hotspot service, or broadband from a different provider that serves your address. Each requires an active plan and compatible equipment; availability, activation time, cost, data allowance, and speeds vary.

- 2-in-1 Solution: The SIMO Pro features a next gen 5G hotspot device (Wi-Fi 6E) along with a 8000mAH power bank built-in

Before signing up, compare the total monthly cost including fees, eligibility, service at your address, time to activate, data limits or speeds, and equipment requirements. Check these details directly with the provider. A new modem or router alone does not provide internet service, and a VPN does not remove an account suspension.

USAC says Lifeline subscribers may switch phone or internet companies at any time, though reapplication may be needed to confirm eligibility. Switching does not mean every provider serves every location or that an existing suspended account will be restored. Confirm the new provider’s availability and terms before cancelling or changing service.

Escalate if the provider does not resolve the problem
If you cannot get help from the company, USAC says you may contact your state utility regulator. For Lifeline-related company issues, you may also submit a complaint to the FCC. The FCC Consumer Complaint Center accepts complaints about internet billing, equipment, availability, and speed; use the category that best matches the issue. Visit the FCC Consumer Complaint Center and keep your provider correspondence and account records available.
