If a WordPress update breaks your site, first identify what changed—WordPress core, a plugin, or a theme—and whether you can still open wp-admin. Back up the current site before attempting a rollback. Then restore only the affected component when possible; use a full-site backup when the problem is broader or a targeted fix is not available.
Choose the rollback scope before changing anything
A white screen or “critical error” does not, by itself, mean WordPress core is the cause. Memory exhaustion, PHP errors, database problems, and plugin or theme conflicts can produce similar symptoms, so match the recovery method to the change that preceded the failure. WordPress Learn outlines these possible causes in its common WordPress errors lesson.
- A plugin or theme changed: consider reverting that component first.
- WordPress core changed: consider a known-good full-site backup or a carefully planned core recovery.
- You are unsure what changed, or several parts are affected: avoid guessing; preserve the current state and diagnose in staging or with your host.
Before proceeding, make a fresh backup if you can. WordPress advises backing up both site files and the database before an upgrade. Ask your host what its backups include, how old they are, and how restoration works; a files-only copy is not a complete site backup. See the WordPress backup guidance.
If you can still access the dashboard
For a plugin or theme update
- Make a current backup of both files and the database, or confirm that a recent restorable host backup exists.
- Identify the exact plugin or theme updated just before the issue began. If practical, test by disabling or changing that component in a staging copy rather than experimenting on the live site.
- For a plugin or theme hosted on WordPress.org, check whether WP Rollback supports the component and review its current instructions. Its free version covers WordPress.org-hosted plugins and themes; its listing says premium products require its Pro product.
- For premium products, consult the developer’s documentation or version archive. Confirm the version is compatible with your WordPress and PHP setup before installing it.
- After the change, check the affected pages and key functions, then review the site’s error logs or Site Health information if the fault remains.
A rollback tool can itself leave a site broken, as WP Rollback’s listing cautions. Do not treat a successful file change as proof the site is repaired; check the site and keep a way to restore your backup.

For a WordPress core update
Core recovery is not the same as reverting one plugin or theme. If you have a known-good backup of both files and database, restoring that backup may be the more coherent option—but it also restores the site to the backup’s point in time. Content or orders added afterward may be lost or need careful reconciliation.
If you instead plan a core downgrade, use a staging copy if available and make a backup first. The Core Rollback plugin listing describes a version-selection workflow and warns that downgrading can make WordPress unusable or create plugin and theme incompatibilities. An older core release should not be treated as a permanent security fix: use it only as a controlled recovery step, then resolve the underlying compatibility problem and return to a supported, updated installation.

If the update failed while it was installing
WordPress 6.3 introduced automatic restoration of the previously installed plugin or theme files when a manual plugin or theme update fails. The old files are temporarily moved under wp-content/upgrade-temp-backup/; after a successful update, that temporary backup is deleted. This protects against a failed installation, not against a successful update that later causes a problem. The feature is described in the WordPress Core development note.

If wp-admin is unavailable
Use your host’s file manager, FTP/SFTP access, or backup-and-restore controls if you know how to use them; otherwise ask the host for help. Exact paths, access requirements, and restore controls vary by provider. WordPress Learn recommends checking host backup services and explains how to transfer site files over FTP; see its site backup lesson.
- Prefer restoring a verified backup over deleting or replacing files by guesswork.
- If a plugin is the likely cause and you have file access, ask your host or follow the plugin’s official recovery instructions to disable that specific plugin.
- Do not restore an old database without considering changes made since that backup. A database restore can roll back posts, settings, customer activity, or other stored data as well as the code state.
- If you lack a reliable backup or are unsure which files or database to restore, pause and contact the host before making more changes.
If WordPress is stuck in maintenance mode or core files are incomplete
WordPress core updates replace files and use a .maintenance file during the process. A timeout can interrupt an update, as described in the WordPress core update reference. With a backup in hand, check whether maintenance mode is stale and whether the core files were fully replaced. Avoid broad file deletion or manual replacement based on generic instructions; confirm the correct recovery steps with your host or WordPress documentation for your setup.

How to choose between a component rollback and a full restore

When the site is stable enough to investigate, use staging to test likely plugin or theme conflicts before changing the live installation. WordPress Learn discusses staging and host backup services in its troubleshooting lesson.

What to do if the rollback does not fix it
- Back up the current state if possible, even if the site is broken.
- Record the exact error message and the time it appeared; save relevant PHP or server logs if your host provides them.
- Check for plugin and theme conflicts, PHP errors, memory exhaustion, or database problems rather than repeating the same rollback.
- Reproduce the problem in staging and change one likely cause at a time.
- Ask your host for help if the dashboard, file access, database restore, or update state is unclear.
