A poor reading is a prompt to investigate, not a diagnosis or automatic emergency alert. Check which pollutant your monitor measures, confirm its placement and instructions, and look for a recent source. Then reduce that source, ventilate only if outdoor conditions are suitable, and use filtration when particles are the concern. For immediate life-safety warnings, rely on certified carbon monoxide alarms and smoke detectors—not a low-cost air monitor.

What a poor reading does—and does not—tell you

An indoor monitor detects only the pollutants or conditions its sensors are designed to measure. A PM-only monitor, for example, cannot tell you whether carbon monoxide or radon is present. Its reading is therefore not a complete assessment of indoor air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says most pollutants also lack widely accepted indoor concentration limits, while consumer monitor alert thresholds are often set by manufacturers. A red indicator is not, by itself, a universal health limit or proof of a dangerous exposure.

Low-cost sensor performance varies, and temperature or high humidity can affect accuracy. EPA does not generally evaluate sensor performance in indoor conditions. Treat a change as a useful clue to check—not proof of a pollutant, its source, or a health effect. See EPA’s guidance on low-cost air pollution monitors and indoor air quality and its frequent questions about air sensors.

What to do when the monitor shows poor air quality

  1. Identify the sensor and reading

Check the device display or app and its manual to see whether the alert is for particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide (CO2), radon, humidity, or another measure. Find out what the device’s color or alert means according to its manufacturer. Do not infer that an unmeasured pollutant is absent.

  2. Check placement and recent activity

Follow the manufacturer’s placement and operating instructions. EPA’s general guidance is to place a monitor in the occupant’s breathing zone—roughly 3–6 feet for a typical adult, depending on whether the person is seated or standing—with airflow to its sensor unobstructed. Avoid placing it right beside a stove, fireplace, cleaning products, a heating or cooling vent, a draft, an open window, or an exterior door; a reading there may not represent the room. AirNow also advises breathing-height placement and avoiding doors, windows, stoves, and HVAC vents in its air-sensor placement guidance.

Think about what changed around the time of the alert: cooking, cleaning, painting, using a combustion appliance, smoking, or outdoor smoke entering the home. A monitor may help you spot a change associated with an activity, but it cannot establish the cause on its own.

  3. Reduce the likely source

When you can identify an avoidable source, stop or reduce it first. For example, stop smoking indoors or pause an activity that is generating particles. Use household products as directed, and address moisture or combustion-appliance concerns through appropriate means. EPA identifies source control as often the most effective way to improve indoor air. For cooking-related particles, it gives turning on a range hood or opening a window or door as examples, when conditions make that appropriate. Its guidance is in Care for Your Air: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality.

  4. Ventilate only when outdoor air is suitable

Opening a window is not always the right response to a high reading. Bring in outdoor air when local air quality, weather, and safety allow; use kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans that vent outdoors where appropriate. Avoid drawing outdoor air in during wildfire smoke or other high pollution, high pollen, extreme heat or cold, or unsuitable humidity. Check local conditions before ventilating. EPA discusses these considerations in its guidance on biological contaminants and indoor air quality and improving indoor air quality at home.

During wildfire smoke or other outdoor particle intrusion, EPA advises setting HVAC or air conditioning to recirculate to reduce smoke entry. Use a MERV 13 filter, or the most efficient filter the system can accommodate; do not install one the equipment cannot handle. Air the home out when outdoor air quality improves. See EPA’s guidance on emergencies and indoor air quality.

  5. Consider filtration when particles are the concern

A portable air cleaner can supplement source control and ventilation. Choose a model intended for the room size; EPA’s home air-cleaner guide recommends looking for a unit designated HEPA or with a high clean air delivery rate (CADR) for smoke when selecting a cleaner for small particles. Selection depends on the pollutant and room. A particle filter is not a universal solution for gases, VOCs, or radon, and an air cleaner does not replace addressing the source. Do not use ozone generators in occupied spaces: EPA says they are not safe when people are present. More selection guidance is available in EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

    • If a radon monitor reports above EPA’s action level of 4 pCi/L, consider a long-term test or consult a radon professional.
    • If cooking raises PM, increase exhaust ventilation when outdoor conditions make that appropriate.
    • Rising CO2 in a classroom may indicate that more ventilation is needed.

If someone in the household has symptoms that may be related to indoor pollution, discuss them with a healthcare provider. A professional may be needed to identify or resolve a persistent or unclear problem.

When a monitor reading is a safety issue

A low-cost indoor air monitor is not a substitute for a certified carbon monoxide (CO) alarm or smoke detector. CO is colorless and odorless and can cause serious illness or death at high levels; a certified CO alarm is designed to warn of unusual buildup. Likewise, use a smoke detector for fire warnings. Do not wait for a consumer monitor to confirm a suspected CO or fire emergency.

Choosing the right response

Concern Useful response Important limit
Cooking particles or other identifiable particle source Reduce or stop the source; use an exhaust hood when appropriate; consider a room-sized portable air cleaner for particles. A particle filter does not solve every pollutant concern.
Wildfire smoke or outdoor particle intrusion Set HVAC or air conditioning to recirculate; use MERV 13 or the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate; air out the home when outdoor air improves. Check HVAC compatibility before changing filters.
Possible radon If the monitor reports above EPA’s 4 pCi/L action level, consider a long-term test or a radon professional. A general-purpose particle cleaner is not a radon solution.
Possible carbon monoxide or fire Use a certified CO alarm or smoke detector for life-safety warning. A low-cost air monitor is not a replacement for either alarm.
