If someone uses a deepfake of you, report it to the platform hosting it, then take steps based on the harm: request removal of a nonconsensual intimate image, warn people targeted by an impersonator, or secure accounts and identity information that may be exposed. In the United States, a law provides a 48-hour removal process for qualifying intimate images on covered platforms after a valid request; it does not cover every deepfake or every service.
First, identify what the deepfake is being used for
The right response depends on whether the content is an intimate image, a fake profile or scam, or part of an account or identity compromise. Record where the content appears and keep the information needed to locate it and follow up on a report. Avoid resharing an intimate image unnecessarily.
- Nonconsensual intimate image: report it through the platform’s intimate-image or abuse process and use the relevant support service below.
- Impersonation or scam: report the profile or post, alert people who might be targeted, and report suspected fraud.
- Compromised account or identity information: change affected passwords, turn on two-factor authentication, and use the FTC’s identity-theft recovery service if your information was used for identity theft.
The legal and FTC reporting routes in this article are U.S.-specific. Outside the United States, use the platform’s reporting process and check local law and authorities.

Report it to the platform and request removal
Use the service’s report controls or support channel for nonconsensual intimate imagery. The FTC advises reporting intimate images directly to the platform. Keep the post’s location and your report details so you can follow up.

Use the U.S. Take It Down Act process where it applies
The Take It Down Act requires covered platforms to provide a way to request removal of qualifying nonconsensual intimate images, including deepfakes. After receiving a valid request, a covered platform must remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours. The requirement is limited to covered platforms and qualifying content; it is not a guarantee that every image on every site will be removed. If a covered platform fails to act within that period after a valid request, report the failure to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
Choose a service based on the person depicted
- Adults: StopNCII.org is a free service that creates and shares an image fingerprint rather than the image itself. Its matching works with participating platforms, not every website across the internet.
- Images involving someone under 18: use the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s Take It Down service. Treat intimate imagery involving a minor as a child-safety matter and do not circulate it.
The FTC also advises reporting perpetrators to local law enforcement and the FBI. Laws and available remedies vary; the Take It Down Act process described here is U.S.-specific.

If someone is using your face or voice to impersonate you
Report the fake account, post, or message
Report the profile or content to the platform as impersonation or abuse. Keep its location and your report details so you can check the status or follow up.

Warn people through a channel they already trust
Contact anyone likely to receive the impersonator’s requests using a separate, familiar channel—not by replying to the suspicious message. Tell them not to send money or sensitive information in response to an unexpected call or message until they verify it independently. Look up the person’s contact details yourself rather than relying on details in the message.

The FTC warns, “Don’t trust your caller ID. Your caller ID might show the name of a government agency or business, but caller ID can be faked.” Report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC reported that consumers lost nearly $3 billion to impersonators in 2024; that figure covers impersonation scams generally, not deepfake-related losses alone.
If your account or identity information may be compromised
- Change the password for any account whose credentials were disclosed, and change it anywhere else you reused it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for affected accounts.
- If someone used your personal information for identity theft, go to IdentityTheft.gov for reporting and a tailored recovery plan.
- If you sent money, contact the payment provider promptly. Options for recovering it vary by payment method.
What the U.S. removal law does—and does not—promise
The Take It Down Act’s 48-hour timeline begins after a covered platform receives a valid request, and applies to qualifying intimate depictions and known identical copies. It should not be treated as a universal remedy for non-intimate deepfakes, every platform, or every jurisdiction. For a fake voice or video used to impersonate you, the practical routes described here are platform reporting, warning potential targets, and reporting suspected fraud; available legal remedies depend on the facts and location.
