An npm ERESOLVE unable to resolve dependency tree error means npm cannot build a dependency tree that satisfies the peer-dependency requirements it is enforcing. First identify the package declaring the incompatible peer range, then choose compatible package versions, commit the updated lockfile, and verify the result with npm ci. A successful install after bypassing peer checks is not proof that the dependency combination is supported.

What an npm ERESOLVE error means

A peerDependency declares that a package expects to work with a host package or library at a compatible version. Plugins commonly use peer dependencies to state which versions of their host they support. npm 7 and later install peer dependencies by default; npm 3 through 6 did not automatically install them and instead warned when a peer dependency was invalid. See npm’s package.json documentation.

When peer requirements cannot be reconciled, npm may stop with ERESOLVE. The specific conflicting packages and ranges depend on your project; the error output is the starting point for diagnosing them. npm can tolerate some deep peer conflicts by choosing a nearer non-peer dependency specification and issuing a warning. Setting strict-peer-deps makes those conflicts fail instead. The behavior and flags are documented in npm install.

How do I resolve a peer dependency conflict in npm?

  1. Capture the full error. Run the failing install again if needed and retain the complete ERESOLVE output. Identify the package that requires a peer, the peer version range it declares, the host version present or requested, and any other package imposing a competing range.
  2. Check the packages’ manifests and release notes. Confirm which package declares the peer range and whether a maintained release supports the host version your project needs. npm advises package authors to make peer requirements as broad as actual compatibility permits rather than pinning specific patch versions; see npm’s package.json documentation.
  3. Choose a compatible tree. Prefer updating or changing the package versions so the declared peer ranges are satisfied. Review the scope of that change: a fix may involve one package or several, and a broad dependency update can have wider consequences than a targeted adjustment.
  4. Review and commit the lockfile. package.json defines acceptable version ranges, while package-lock.json records the resolved tree. When locked versions satisfy the manifest ranges, npm uses them; when they do not, npm install resolves versions and updates the lockfile. Commit the reviewed lockfile so local development, deployments, and CI can reproduce the same resolution. See npm install and npm’s package-lock documentation.
  5. Verify from a clean state. Run npm ci in the project and in the same configuration used by CI. It requires a lockfile, removes the existing node_modules directory, and installs from the lockfile without rewriting package.json or package-lock.json. It fails when the manifest and lockfile disagree. Details are in npm ci documentation.

How should engineering leaders compare possible fixes?

Evaluate each proposed resolution on four practical dimensions. These are decision criteria, not a scoring model defined by npm.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Compatibility confidence: Does the package combination satisfy its declared peer ranges, or does the proposed fix only bypass their enforcement?
  • Change scope: Does it require changing one dependency, several related packages, or a broad set of dependency ranges?
  • Reproducibility: Is the resulting lockfile reviewed and committed, and does the same clean install succeed in CI?
  • Ongoing maintenance: Is the chosen combination supported by maintained releases, or does it depend on a temporary exception with an owner and a defined removal condition?

What does --legacy-peer-deps do?

--legacy-peer-deps tells npm to ignore peer dependencies while constructing the dependency tree. It can let an install proceed despite a peer conflict, but it does not establish that the packages are compatible. npm warns that “Use of legacy-peer-deps is not recommended, as it will not enforce the peerDependencies contract that meta-dependencies may rely on.” That warning appears in npm’s CLI v7 configuration documentation.

If an emergency makes the workaround unavoidable, treat it as a temporary compatibility risk: record why it is needed, which packages are affected, what validation was performed, who owns the exception, and what condition will trigger its removal. This is a governance practice, not an npm-mandated approval process.

How is --omit=peer different?

--omit=peer is not equivalent to --legacy-peer-deps. npm describes --omit=peer as still designing a tree in which peer dependencies could be placed correctly, while legacy mode ignores peer dependencies when building the tree. Check the current npm install documentation for the CLI version your project uses.

Why does npm ci fail after npm install worked?

npm install can update the lockfile as it resolves versions, whereas npm ci performs a clean, frozen install and rejects disagreement between the manifest and lockfile. A successful local install therefore does not guarantee that CI can reproduce the dependency tree from the committed files.

Configuration can also differ. If the lockfile was created using a tree-shaping flag such as --legacy-peer-deps or --install-links, npm says npm ci must use the same flags or it is likely to encounter errors. npm’s npm ci documentation recommends committing the relevant project-level .npmrc so the setting is consistent. Confirm that local and CI use the same npm configuration and the intended CLI version.
