You cannot reset a Windows 11 HWID from Settings or with a supported Microsoft command. In Microsoft’s activation model, Windows uses a product key or digital license associated with the device’s hardware configuration. The supported fix after a major hardware change—especially a motherboard replacement—is to reactivate Windows, not manually clear or regenerate a hardware ID.
If Windows is already activated and you are trying to “refresh” its activation identity, there is normally nothing to reset. If activation failed after changing hardware, use the Activation troubleshooter or the original product key.
What “reset HWID” means in Windows 11
“HWID” is often used online to describe the hardware-based association used during Windows activation. It is not a value that Microsoft exposes as a resettable field in Windows 11 Settings. Changing a MAC address, computer name, Windows SID, disk serial number, or an individual Device Manager identifier is not Microsoft’s documented way to reset Windows activation.

Windows activation instead matches the installed edition and the device’s hardware configuration with either a digital license or a product key. A motherboard replacement can change that configuration enough for activation to fail, producing an error such as 0xC004F211.

Do not confuse these commands with an HWID reset:

Check whether Windows 11 is activated
- Open Start.
- Go to Settings > System > Activation.
- Read the activation status.
Typical successful messages include:
- Windows is activated with a digital license
- Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account
If either message is shown, Windows is activated. Reinstalling Windows or changing an identifier will not provide a supported benefit. For command-line details, open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
slmgr.vbs /dlislmgr.vbs /dlvslmgr.vbs /xpr
/dli shows basic license information, /dlv shows detailed information, and /xpr displays the activation-expiration date. Microsoft notes that /xpr is mainly useful for KMS clients because retail and MAK activation is normally perpetual.
Before replacing hardware, link your Windows license
If you are planning to replace a motherboard or make another significant hardware change, link the existing digital license to a Microsoft account first.
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Add an account.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Confirm that the page now says Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
Use the same Microsoft account after the hardware change. If the license is not linked beforehand, you may need to enter the original 25-character product key.

Reactivate Windows 11 after a motherboard or other major hardware change
Use this procedure when Windows became unactivated after replacing significant hardware.
- Connect the PC to the internet and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently, then select Next.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account previously linked to the digital license.
- Find the computer in the device list and select This is the device I’m using right now.
- Select Activate.
The Activation troubleshooter is available only when Windows 11 is not activated. If the computer does not appear in the device list, check that you used the same Microsoft account that was associated with the license.

The edition installed after the hardware change must match the edition covered by the license. A Windows 11 Home license will not activate Windows 11 Pro, and a Pro license will not activate Home.

Error 0xC004F210 commonly indicates that the installed edition does not match the edition associated with the digital license. Enter a key for the installed edition or reinstall the edition that matches the license.
Reactivate with the original product key
If the license was not linked to a Microsoft account, use the same valid product key that activated the computer before the hardware change:

- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the 25-character product key.
- Follow the activation prompts.
If you do not have a digital license or a valid product key, select Go to Store on the Activation page to purchase a Windows 11 digital license through Microsoft Store.
What if you reinstall Windows 11?
Reinstalling Windows 11 is not an HWID reset. If the PC already has a digital license, install the same Windows edition and select I don’t have a product key when Windows Setup asks for one. After installation, connect to the internet. Windows should activate online when the edition and device license match.
Reinstalling solely to change the activation identity is unnecessary and can create additional problems, including data loss, driver issues, and an edition mismatch.
Should you use slmgr.vbs /upk, /cpky, or /rearm?
Only use these commands for their documented purposes, and run them from an elevated Command Prompt.
Remove the installed product key
slmgr.vbs /upk/upk uninstalls the product key for the current Windows edition. After a restart, Windows is unlicensed until another product key is installed. It does not reset the device’s hardware-based digital-license association.

Remove the key from the registry
slmgr.vbs /cpky/cpky removes the product key from the registry to reduce the risk of key theft. It does not clear the Windows activation hardware association.
Reset activation timers
slmgr.vbs /rearm/rearm resets activation timers. It does not detach a digital license or create a new HWID. It also has no effect when HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionSoftwareProtectionPlatformSkipRearm is set to 1.
Deleting licensing registry keys, removing tokens.dat, or repeatedly running activation scripts is not Microsoft’s documented method for detaching a digital license. These actions can leave Windows unlicensed or damage the licensing state without solving the underlying problem.

Phone activation option
For editions that support it, type SLUI 04 in the taskbar search box, open the result, and follow the phone-activation prompts. Microsoft states that phone activation and SLUI 04 cannot be used for Windows 11 Pro EDU or Windows 11 Pro for Workstations; those editions must activate over the internet.

Bottom line
There is no supported Windows 11 Settings option or Microsoft command that manually resets an activation HWID. If activation works, leave it alone. If activation failed after a hardware change, link the license to your Microsoft account when possible and use Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot > I changed hardware on this device recently. If the license was not linked, use the original product key, and make sure the installed Windows edition matches the license.

Can I reset my Windows 11 HWID from Settings?
No. Windows 11 does not provide a user-facing HWID reset operation. Settings provides activation status, troubleshooting, product-key entry, and purchase options instead.
Does slmgr /rearm reset HWID?
No. Microsoft defines slmgr.vbs /rearm as a command that resets activation timers. It does not detach or regenerate a digital-license hardware association.
Will changing my MAC address or Windows SID reset activation?
No. Microsoft does not document changing a MAC address, computer name, SID, disk serial number, or Device Manager identifier as a Windows activation reset method.

Why is the Activation troubleshooter missing?
Microsoft makes the Activation troubleshooter available only when Windows 11 is not activated. If Windows is already activated, the troubleshooting option may not appear.
Why does my PC not appear in the device list?
The most common documented reason is that you signed in with a different Microsoft account from the one associated with the digital license. Also verify that the PC is online and that the installed Windows edition matches the license.
Can reinstalling Windows 11 reset the HWID?
No. Reinstallation does not constitute an HWID reset. On a device with an existing digital license, reinstall the same edition and select I don’t have a product key during setup; activation should occur online afterward.
