There is no single reset procedure for every HP wireless mouse. Start by identifying whether yours uses a USB wireless receiver or Bluetooth: reseating the receiver can restore a receiver connection, while a Bluetooth mouse may need to be put into pairing mode and added again. Restoring default settings is a separate, model-specific option.
First, identify the kind of reset you need
A connection reset helps a mouse reconnect to the computer. A settings reset restores defaults and is available only for supported models. Choose the connection type before trying either:
| Connection | First reset or reconnect step | Model-specific options |
|---|---|---|
| USB wireless receiver | Remove the receiver, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it to a different computer port. | If the mouse and receiver have become unpaired, use the instructions for that exact model; HP does not provide one universal re-pairing procedure. |
| Bluetooth | Confirm Bluetooth is enabled, put the mouse into pairing mode as its instructions specify, then add it in Windows Bluetooth settings. | The HP Bluetooth Travel Mouse has additional recovery steps and can restore defaults through HP Accessory Center. |
These connection steps follow HP Support’s wireless mouse troubleshooting guidance. The Travel Mouse instructions and app feature are model-specific.

- Remove any battery or packaging tab, if present.
- Turn on the mouse using its switch.
- Recharge it or install fresh batteries, depending on the model.
- Check whether the receiver is stored in a compartment or already connected to an HP computer.
Reset the connection on a USB receiver mouse
- Connect the receiver directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a hub. HP notes that a hub might not provide enough power for a proper connection.
- Move the mouse close to the receiver. HP suggests a typical distance of 30 cm (1 ft) or less. Move potential sources of interference, such as TVs, cordless phones, and speakers, away from the receiver and mouse.
- Unplug the receiver and wait 10 seconds.
- Reconnect it to a different USB port. HP recommends trying a port on the opposite side of the computer.
- Test the mouse. If it still does not connect and you suspect the mouse has unpaired from its receiver, find the re-pairing steps for your exact model in its documentation. The receiver reset above does not necessarily re-pair the mouse.
Reconnect a Bluetooth mouse in Windows
- Make sure the mouse is switched on.
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings and confirm Bluetooth is on. HP’s general instructions refer to Bluetooth & other devices; labels can vary by Windows version.
- Use the mouse’s model instructions to put it into pairing mode.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device and follow the prompts to add the mouse.
Extra recovery steps for the HP Bluetooth Travel Mouse
HP gives these additional steps for the Bluetooth Travel Mouse specifically, not for every HP wireless mouse:

- Update the computer’s Bluetooth driver if the problem continues.
HP lists Bluetooth 4.2 or later and Windows 11 or macOS High Sierra (10.13) or later as requirements for this model. These requirements do not establish compatibility requirements for other HP mice. See HP’s HP Bluetooth Travel Mouse setup and troubleshooting instructions.
Restore default settings on a supported mouse
Use this option only if your device is supported by HP Accessory Center. For the HP Bluetooth Travel Mouse, HP documents this path:
Rank #2
- WIRELESS CONVENIENCE – Go cordless with 2.4GHz USB-A connectivity that keeps you connected up to a range of 32.8 feet (2); USB nano receiver stores inside the mouse for easy portability
- QUIET CLICKS – Up to 90% noise reduction on the left and right buttons give you the same satisfying click feel without the distracting sound, making it ideal for working, creating, or playing in any space
- COMFORTABLE DESIGN – Ergonomic right-handed design, wireless optical mouse with 3-button navigation and integrated scroll wheel makes for comfortable and productive all-day use

- Open HP Accessory Center.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Device Reset.
- Next to the mouse, select Reset to default.
This restores settings; it is not the same as reconnecting a USB receiver. HP’s HP Accessory Center guidance describes the feature for supported devices, so check that your model is compatible before relying on it.
Work out whether the fault is the mouse, computer, or surface
Test the mouse on another computer
Try it on a second working computer. If it works there, continue troubleshooting the original computer. If it fails on the second computer too, HP says the mouse might be defective.
