To reset a Motorola Razr, open Settings > System > (Advanced) > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset) if the phone works normally. If you cannot open Settings, use Recovery mode. A factory reset erases data stored on the phone; if the Razr is only frozen, try a force reboot first because it does not erase data.
Choose the right kind of reset
- Want to erase the phone? Use the Settings reset or Recovery mode procedure below. A factory reset removes local data and settings.
- Forgot the screen lock? Erasing the phone is Motorola’s recommended route to regain access, but you may still need the Google account previously synced to it during setup.
- Phone is unresponsive, but you do not want to erase it? Try a force reboot instead.
- Passing the Razr to someone else? Remove the screen lock and Google account before resetting so the recipient is less likely to encounter ownership verification during setup.
Before you erase the Razr
Back up anything you want to keep. Motorola says a factory reset deletes the Google account on the device, media, settings, app settings and data—including text messages—and downloaded apps. Check that photos, files, contacts, and messages you need are backed up.
- Make sure you know the username and password for the Google account previously used on the phone. Motorola advises waiting 24 hours after changing the Google password before resetting.
- Have the screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password available if you know it.
- Charge the phone before beginning. Motorola specifies at least 30% battery for its external-reset procedure; use that as a conservative minimum if you are resetting through Settings and do not have model-specific guidance.
Preparing a phone for a new owner
Before the reset, remove the screen lock and Google account from the phone. This helps prevent Factory Reset Protection from requiring the previous owner’s account when the next owner sets up the device.
Reset from Settings when the phone opens normally
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then (Advanced) if that option appears.
- Tap Reset options.
- Choose Erase all data (factory reset).
- Review the warning and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm.
Motorola’s general instructions cover Android 9 through Android 15, but the wording and location can vary by Razr generation and software version. The 2019 Razr guide, for example, gives the Android 10 path as Settings > System > Advanced > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). If your menu differs, use the guide for your exact Razr model rather than guessing at another sequence.

Use Recovery mode if you cannot open Settings
This external reset erases the phone. Motorola’s instructions say, “When using this feature; everything is deleted from the device.” Button behavior and menu labels can differ by model or software version.
- Charge the battery to at least 30%, then turn the phone off.
- Hold Volume Down and Power together until the phone starts.
- Use Volume Down to highlight Recovery mode, then press Power.
- If an Android robot with a red exclamation mark appears, hold Power and press and release Volume Up to display the menu.
- Use the volume keys to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power.
- Highlight Factory data reset and press Power to confirm.
- When the reset finishes, highlight Reboot system now and press Power.
Motorola cautions that you should know the Gmail address and password associated with the phone before starting. If the screen or controls do not match these steps, check the instructions for your specific Razr generation.

If you forgot the PIN, pattern, or password
Motorola’s support guidance says a forgotten screen lock requires erasing the phone and setting it up again. After the reset, Android may ask you to verify ownership using the Google account previously synced to the Razr. A reset does not bypass that account verification; if you cannot provide the account details, resolve access to the account before proceeding.
If the Razr is frozen but you do not want to erase it
Hold the Power button for 10–20 seconds to force a reboot. Motorola says this restarts the phone without deleting its data. It is not a factory reset, so use it when the phone is merely unresponsive and your goal is to restart it.

What to expect after the reset
The phone restarts to its initial setup flow. Set it up with the Google account it requests, if account verification appears, then restore backed-up data and reinstall apps as needed. If you reset the phone for a new owner, do not give them your account password; remove your account before erasing the device.
