Reserve through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks’ (KDWP) official booking channels, then budget separately for the campsite, required vehicle permit, camping permit, and any utilities or site surcharges. Check the live booking total for your dates: rates change on November 1, 2026, and not every campsite is reservable.

How to reserve a Kansas state park campsite

  1. Choose a park, dates, and site. Start with KDWP’s campsite and cabin reservation information and use an official reservation channel, including the KDWP reservation system, CampItKS, or ReserveAmerica. Availability and reservability vary by park; some sites are first come, first served.
  2. Confirm the rules for your dates before paying. Review the terms shown in the live booking flow. The general reservation terms describe lead times and seasonal availability, but their older April–September wording may not match the live 2026 system. For date-specific questions, use the portal or contact the park office.
  3. Review the itemized total and pay. KDWP terms say online and phone reservations are paid by credit card. At a park office, payment may include card or cash and, with approval, check or money order. Check that the checkout amount accounts for the campsite reservation charge and applicable permits or add-ons.
  4. Save your confirmation and follow the arrival terms. General terms list campsite check-in and check-out at 2 p.m., one camping unit per site, and possible cancellation if you have not arrived within 48 hours unless you made prior arrangements. They also list a two-night weekend minimum including Friday and Saturday, and a four-night campsite holiday minimum. Confirm the terms attached to your specific booking.

Cancellation and changes

KDWP’s general terms state that cancelling or not arriving 0–2 days before arrival brings no campsite refund; cancellation 3–14 days before arrival forfeits the reservation fee, one night’s fees, and $5; and cancellation 15 or more days ahead forfeits the reservation fee plus $5. Changes, rescheduling, or shortening a stay incur $5 under those terms. Check the transaction terms at booking, as the applicable details may vary.

What you pay for

A campsite reservation does not cover every required charge. KDWP requires a valid vehicle permit at every state park, and an overnight stay also requires a camping permit. Vehicle permits are sold separately from campsite reservations and are based on the vehicle, not passenger count. Camping fees are charged per camping unit, so multiple separate tents or units may increase the total. The current fee page also lists a $2.75 processing fee per camping stay.

Use the booking flow to see the campsite reservation charge; do not assume it is included in the nightly camping rate. Utilities and designated prime-site fees may be additional. Check the exact vehicle-permit price and eligibility on KDWP’s entrance and camping fees page before travel: its indexed fee table does not visibly show every current vehicle rate.

Kansas state park camping fees and the November 2026 change

KDWP’s fee page, accessed October 4, 2026, shows the following camping charges. The future amounts are scheduled to begin November 1, 2026; check the fee page and live checkout for the rate that applies to your stay.

Charge Current schedule before Nov. 1, 2026 Beginning Nov. 1, 2026
Daily camping, per night $12.75 $17.75
Utility hookup, one utility, per night $9 $11
Utility hookup, two utilities, per night $11 $13
Utility hookup, three utilities, per night $12 $15
Youth camping, per night per unit $4 $4
Prime-site fee, per night for designated sites, April 1–September 30 $2 $2
14-night permit not stated on the cited fee page $165.50
Overflow camping $6.50 not stated for the future schedule on the cited fee page
Annual camping permit offered no longer offered

The table is not a complete trip quote: it excludes the separately determined vehicle-permit and campsite reservation charges. Add only the utilities and designated-site surcharge that apply to the site you select, and use the booking total for the exact stay.

How to estimate your total

  1. Enter the exact park, dates, and site in the official booking system to establish availability and the campsite reservation charge.
  2. Identify the required vehicle permit and camping permit charges applicable to your visit and stay. Confirm current permit prices on the KDWP fee page.
  3. Multiply the applicable nightly camping rate by the number of nights and camping units, then add any utility hookup or prime-site fee shown for the site.
  4. Add the $2.75 processing fee per camping stay and review the final checkout breakdown for other applicable charges.

For example, the listed current $12.75 nightly camping rate is a per-night fee, not a complete price for a reservation. A stay’s actual total depends on its dates, number of camping units, required vehicle access, site type, utilities, and reservation charge. The rate becomes $17.75 per night beginning November 1, 2026.

Availability and choosing a site

Most Kansas state parks have camping facilities. KDWP lists Mushroom Rock, Prairie Spirit Trail, Flint Hills Trail, and Sand Hills as exceptions. For parks with camping, the specific site inventory and rules remain park- and date-dependent. When comparing sites, compare the total for the exact stay, site type and facilities, vehicle access, availability, and cancellation exposure rather than relying on a nightly base rate alone.
