Before investing in a Nigerian stock, build your view from the company’s filings, NGX disclosures and dated market data—not a price chart or an unsourced summary. Read several reporting periods together, test whether reported earnings turn into cash, check debt and share-count changes, compare valuation inputs on consistent dates, and screen for disclosure, compliance and trading-liquidity risks. This is a research framework, not a recommendation to buy or sell a security.

1. Identify the issuer and find its primary disclosures

Start with the company’s full name, NGX listing and sector, then locate its released financial statements and material announcements. The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) X-Compliance Report includes categories for released financials and filing or compliance concerns. Use it as a starting point, not as a complete filing archive: an item shown there may not be the latest disclosure for an issuer.

NGX says periodic disclosures and ongoing material-event disclosures should be released to the exchange in a timely manner. Its listing-requirements summary describes continuing obligations covering quarterly, semi-annual and annual statements and IFRS accounting. The summary is not a substitute for the current rulebook or the issuer’s filings; check the applicable requirements for the company and its listing segment.

NGX’s X-Factbook is an annual reference that describes listed-company profiles, five-year financial performance, corporate-action history, market statistics and index performance. It offers paid modular subscriptions, so do not assume the full resource is free. Use it for orientation and historical context, then confirm important figures in company statements or a relevant market-data source. NGX’s X-DataPortal provides data and reports; its page describes free access that includes seven days of historical price data and a Top Ten Brokers Performance report. Portal access, terms and data freshness can change, so verify the current offering before relying on it. These NGX resource descriptions were reviewed on 4 October 2026.

For an issuer, assemble the latest available audited annual statements, interim statements, accompanying notes, auditor’s report, and announcements of material events or corporate actions. Record the period covered and publication date for every document. If there is a long gap between the latest statement and the date of your analysis, flag the information as stale rather than treating it as a current picture.

Keep a source log

  • Record the document title, reporting period, publication date and whether it is audited or interim.
  • Use the issuer’s published statements and notices to verify figures that appear in summaries or market-data services.
  • Note the date of every share-price input. A valuation calculated with a later price and older share count can be misleading.
  • Save the underlying notice for any filing, free-float or compliance alert that could materially affect your view.

2. Read the financial statements as a connected set

A company’s income statement, cash-flow statement, balance sheet and notes answer different questions. Review them together across several years and available interim periods; a single strong or weak period may not describe the underlying business.

Check earnings and operating performance

Track revenue, operating profit, finance costs, tax and net income. Look for changes in margins and ask what drove them: higher sales, pricing, lower costs, a one-off gain, or some combination. Read segment information where available to see whether results depend heavily on one product, market or customer group. Do not treat a temporary gain as recurring earnings without evidence.

Compare profit with cash generation

Compare net income with cash generated from operations. Persistent divergence deserves investigation, but it is a prompt for issuer-specific scrutiny—not proof of misconduct. Check whether working-capital movements, such as rising receivables or inventories, explain the difference. Review capital expenditure alongside operating cash flow to understand how much cash remains after investment in the business.

Assess the balance sheet and funding pressure

Review borrowings, cash, receivables, inventories and equity, including how these balances change over time. Consider whether debt and finance costs appear manageable in relation to operating performance and cash generation. A growing receivables balance, heavy inventory build-up, or rising borrowing may warrant a closer look at the notes and management’s explanation; none alone establishes a problem.

Read the notes and auditor’s report

Notes can materially change how headline numbers should be interpreted. Check accounting policies, related-party transactions, contingent liabilities, segment concentration and events after the reporting period. Read the auditor’s report for any qualification or other matter that affects how confidently the statements can be used. If a note is unclear or a material figure cannot be reconciled, mark it as unresolved rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

3. Check shares, dilution and shareholder distributions

Per-share measures depend on the number of shares outstanding and on corporate actions. Check the issuer’s notices and current share data for rights issues, placements, bonus issues, splits and other changes before calculating earnings per share, market capitalization or dividend yield. A share-count increase can dilute existing ownership even if the company’s total earnings rise.

Review dividend history alongside the company’s cash generation, borrowing and investment needs. A past dividend does not establish that a similar payment will recur or be sustainable. Calculate yield only from a declared dividend and a dated share price, and make clear which dividend period the figure represents.

NGX lists corporate-action history as an X-Factbook feature. Treat that as a research aid and confirm important actions against the company’s own notices and current share data.

4. Decide whether the valuation comparison is fair

No single multiple tells you whether a Nigerian stock is cheap. Choose a method that fits the business, define every input, and align reporting periods, share counts and market-price dates. The methods below are analytical tools; NGX’s reviewed materials do not prescribe them or provide a universal fair-value formula or current Nigerian market-wide benchmark.

Measure When it may help Key checks
Price-to-earnings (P/E) When earnings are positive and reasonably representative of the business. Use a clearly defined earnings period and consistent share count. Consider whether one-off items distort earnings.
Price-to-book (P/B) When balance-sheet value is meaningful for the type of business being assessed. Check the quality and relevance of reported equity; book value may be less informative for some businesses.
Enterprise value to operating earnings When comparing operating businesses with reasonably comparable financial profiles. Define the earnings measure and how enterprise value is calculated. Align periods and treatment of debt and cash.
Dividend yield When a dividend has been declared and the company’s capacity to pay is being assessed. Use the dividend for a stated period and a dated share price; history alone does not prove future sustainability.

Use peers and company history carefully

Compare a candidate with genuinely comparable listed businesses and with its own history. Align fiscal periods, currencies, share counts and price dates. Consider inflation or accounting context where relevant, and separate recurring performance from one-off items. NGX’s X-Factbook and X-DataPortal describe historical and market-data resources that may help provide context, but current prices and issuer-level figures still need to be checked when you do the analysis.

A lower multiple than a peer or the company’s own past is not, by itself, evidence of undervaluation. It may reflect weaker growth, governance concerns, lower liquidity, balance-sheet quality or other business risks. Explain differences before drawing a comparison.

Make assumptions visible in scenarios

If you estimate a value or target price, disclose the assumptions behind it instead of presenting a point estimate as an exchange-established fact. Show how the result changes when earnings, margins, growth, discount rates or currency-related costs move. A range of scenarios makes uncertainty visible; it does not remove it.

5. Screen disclosure, compliance and trading risks

Review NGX compliance indicators

The X-Compliance Report identifies categories that include early and delinquent audited-account filers, delinquent quarterly filers, released financials, companies operating below listing standards, free-float deficiencies, breaches, enforcement actions and companies slated for delisting. These are useful screening signals, not a substitute for understanding the underlying facts. NGX says it does not guarantee the report’s accuracy or reliability and accepts no liability for decisions relying on it. Verify a material alert against the exchange notice and company disclosure before acting on it.

Assess whether the stock can be traded at a usable price

Check current traded volume and value, trading frequency, free float and bid-ask conditions where available. NGX’s compliance and market-data resources include free-float and market information, but the resource descriptions do not establish current liquidity figures for any particular company. Thin trading can make it harder to enter or exit a position at the displayed last price; do not assume that quote represents a price at which a trade can readily be completed.

Understand how market access works

NGX says investors buying in either the primary or secondary market must appoint a registered Trading License Holder/stockbroker to facilitate account opening and trading, and meet the dealer’s KYC requirements. NGX identifies the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) as the licensed central depository, clearing and settlement institution; holdings can be domiciled there through the appointed dealer or a licensed custodian. Verify the dealer’s current registration and account-opening procedures through official sources before funding an account.

6. Compare stocks with one consistent framework

If you are considering more than one company, compare them on the same dimensions rather than selecting whichever headline multiple looks lowest. A simple comparison sheet can keep the major questions visible:

  • Business and sector economics: revenue drivers, cyclicality, customer or product concentration, and growth prospects.
  • Earnings quality and resilience: multi-year margins, cash conversion, leverage, working capital, and exposure to input, funding or currency pressures.
  • Price paid: valuation against aligned peer data and the issuer’s own history, with one-off earnings identified.
  • Marketability and disclosure: trading activity and free float, recency of filings, and exchange compliance signals.
  • Shareholder outcomes: dilution and corporate actions, dividend record and capacity, and governance or enforcement concerns.

These dimensions organize the comparison; they do not constitute an NGX ranking of issuers. Your conclusion should identify what the documents establish, what remains uncertain, and which risks could change your view.

7. A practical pre-investment checklist

  1. Identify the issuer. Confirm its listed identity and gather available audited statements, interim statements, notes and material notices.
  2. Date the evidence. Record reporting periods, publication dates and the market-price date you will use.
  3. Trace performance into cash. Review revenue, margins, net income, operating cash flow, capital expenditure and working-capital movements across periods.
  4. Review financial resilience. Examine debt, cash, receivables, inventories, equity and finance costs, then investigate material changes in the notes.
  5. Adjust for share changes. Verify current shares outstanding and corporate actions before calculating per-share measures or market capitalization.
  6. Choose a suitable valuation method. State the period and inputs, compare with relevant peers and company history, and make assumptions explicit.
  7. Check disclosure and execution risks. Review filing recency, X-Compliance categories, free float and available trading information; verify material alerts against notices.
  8. Confirm the route to trade. Check the current registration and procedures of the required NGX-registered Trading License Holder before opening or funding an account.

NGX’s pages and portals describe sources for disclosures, market context and compliance information, but they do not establish a current fair value or risk ranking for a particular company. Base any decision on the issuer-specific evidence and dated inputs you have verified, and treat unresolved gaps as uncertainty rather than filling them with a confident-sounding estimate.
