Start with each company’s latest annual report and quarterly results, then use its investor presentation, earnings-call transcript and exchange filings to test the story against reported performance. HDFC Bank, Infosys, YES Bank, Hindustan Zinc and RVNL operate in very different businesses, so compare them using a consistent process—but use business-specific measures, not one undifferentiated scorecard.
Build an evidence trail before forming a view
- Find the latest results and annual report. Start at the company’s investor-relations site and check its NSE and BSE filings. Confirm the reporting period and whether figures are standalone or consolidated; use the same basis when comparing periods.
- Read the presentation and earnings-call transcript next. Use them to understand management’s explanation of results, priorities and risks. Treat forecasts, targets and explanations as management statements, not independently verified outcomes.
- Check ownership, governance and material disclosures. Review shareholding patterns, board and committee information, related-party disclosures, auditor observations, regulatory disclosures and material exchange announcements. Note the date of each item: governance and ownership can change.
- Make a period-by-period record. For each measure, note the period, definition, source and any adjustment. Compare several periods rather than drawing a conclusion from a single quarter or a headline growth rate.
- Write down what would change your view. Identify the business-specific evidence that would weaken the investment case, and what future disclosure would confirm or challenge it.
Official starting points include HDFC Bank’s investor-relations materials; Infosys’s financials and filings; YES BANK’s investor-relations section and NSE/BSE filings; Hindustan Zinc’s investor-relations materials and annual reports; and RVNL’s NSE filings and company disclosures. Use the issuers’ latest available documents, rather than relying on an older report or a third-party summary.
What to examine at each company
HDFC Bank: funding, asset quality and capital
Use the bank’s latest results and investor presentation to examine deposit and loan growth, funding mix, margins, asset quality, provisions, capital and liquidity. Look at how growth is funded and whether asset-quality and capital measures move in step with it. If management discusses integration-related comparisons, check how those comparisons affect reported periods before treating a change as underlying growth. HDFC Bank’s investor portal lists results, key parameters, presentations, transcripts, annual reports, ownership information and regulatory disclosures; it displayed Q1FY27 materials and an Integrated Annual Report 2025–26 on 7 October 2026.

Compare reported revenue growth with constant-currency growth, and examine margins, client concentration, workforce economics, cash generation and capital returns. Track whether large-deal wins convert into revenue over time rather than treating contract value as current-period sales.
#1 Best Overall
Infosys reported FY2026 revenue of ₹1,78,650 crore, up 9.6% year on year; free cash flow of ₹33,097 crore, equal to 112.3% of net profit; large-deal total contract value of US$14.9 billion, 55% of it net new; basic EPS of ₹71.58; and cash and investments of ₹43,075 crore. These are historical, company-reported FY2026 figures, not forward estimates. The company defines free cash flow as operating cash flow less capital expenditure under its consolidated IFRS cash-flow statement.
Infosys reported an adjusted operating margin of 21.0% for FY2026. That adjusted figure excludes the effect of a stated ₹1,289 crore labour-code-related provision; do not treat it as an unadjusted reported margin. Infosys also reported a ₹48.0 dividend per share and 31.6% ROE for FY2026. Its stated capital-allocation policy expects to return approximately 85% of free cash flow cumulatively over five years, subject to applicable laws and approvals; a policy is not a guaranteed payout.

- It can be a gift option
The company’s financials page offers quarterly and annual reports, multi-year financial data, subsidiary information, statutory filings and guidance-versus-actual reporting. Use those records to check whether growth, margins and cash generation align with management commentary.
YES BANK: verify the latest bank metrics, not just an older report
For YES BANK, examine the latest available quarterly results and annual report for deposit and loan growth, funding, margins, asset quality, provisions, capital, liquidity and profitability. Check investor-relations releases against NSE and BSE filings. The located FY2024–25 annual report describes those publication and filing channels, but it is not a substitute for newer disclosures when assessing the bank’s current position.
Hindustan Zinc: connect production and costs to commodity exposure
Use the latest annual report and quarterly results to examine production, realized prices, cost structure, reserves, capital spending, environmental exposure, regulation and sensitivity to commodity prices. Separate changes in output or unit costs from changes driven by realized prices. An official FY2025–26 Integrated Annual Report is available as a starting point; use the full report and current results for company-specific figures rather than inferring performance from the report’s existence.
RVNL: test project execution, cash conversion and governance
For Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, inspect project disclosures and results for order-book quality, execution, conversion of awards into completed work, working capital, cash flow and counterparty exposure. A large order book alone does not establish that work will be executed on schedule or converted into cash.
Rank #4
RVNL’s NSE integrated filing dated 29 April 2026 included results, shareholding, annual reports, investor and analyst meeting information, credit ratings, governance and material-event disclosures. For the quarter ended 31 March 2026, it reported a board of eight directors: five whole-time directors, two government nominees and one independent director. The filing said appointments of six independent directors were awaited from the Ministry of Railways. This is a dated disclosure; check later filings for changes.
Compare the five without treating them as interchangeable
Use the same high-level questions for every company, but choose measures that fit the business. A bank’s funding and asset quality cannot be compared directly with an IT company’s deal conversion or a project company’s working capital.
Best Value
| Comparison question | How to apply it |
|---|---|
| Is growth durable? | Separate volume, pricing, currency, acquisitions and project wins where the disclosures allow. Check whether growth persists across periods. |
| Does profitability convert into cash? | Track margins, returns and operating cash conversion over multiple periods. Record the company’s definitions and identify one-off adjustments. |
| Can the balance sheet support the business? | For banks, study funding quality, asset quality, provisions, capital and liquidity. For other companies, examine debt, cash, working capital and obligations. |
| Is execution visible in reported outcomes? | Check whether plans, large deals, mine plans or awarded projects turn into delivered output, revenue and cash. |
| Who owns and oversees the company? | Review ownership, board composition, related parties, auditor observations, regulatory actions and material exchange disclosures, using current filings. |
| What could break the case? | State the business-specific downside risks and distinguish disclosed risks from your own analysis. Specify what evidence would change your view. |
Assess valuation only after business quality
Choose a valuation measure that fits the business, state the share-price date and use the same date and denominator for the companies being compared. Compare each company with relevant peers and its own history, and ask what growth and profitability the current price appears to require. Differences in business risk matter: a bank, an IT services company, a metals producer and a rail infrastructure project company do not become comparable simply because they are all listed shares.
No current valuation conclusion follows from the operating figures above. Before relying on a valuation, calculate it from a clearly dated market price and the corresponding financial data, then test how sensitive the result is to slower growth, weaker margins or execution delays.
Quick Recap
Turn the research into a decision record
- Record the latest reporting period and source for each key fact.
- Separate reported results from management commentary, targets and your own estimates.
- Keep adjustments and definitions beside the figures they affect.
- Write a short thesis, the strongest counterargument and the next disclosure that would confirm or challenge each.
- Do not treat growth, an order book, cash, dividends or past share returns as a guarantee of future performance.
