If an intimate image of you has been shared without your consent, report it to the website or platform hosting it and separately request removal from each search engine where it appears. A search engine can remove a result from its own service, but it cannot delete the original image from another website. You can also use a hash-matching service to help participating platforms detect reuploads.
You do not need to share the image more widely to ask for help. Save the relevant URLs and any messages or threats, and avoid uploading or forwarding sexual images of anyone under 18.
First, identify where the image appears
Make a private record of the image’s webpage URL, any direct image URL you can safely access, and the URLs of search results that show it. Note the search terms that surfaced the results. A platform may need specific links and context to identify the material; Google’s request form asks for content URLs and, where applicable, Search results URLs and search terms. Screenshots or other context may help, but do not include screenshots containing sexual imagery of someone under 18 in Google’s general form.
- Keep copies of relevant messages, account names, dates, and threats in a secure place.
- Do not repost the image to prove it exists, and do not send it to friends or support staff unless an official process specifically requires it and it is safe and lawful to do so.
- If gathering evidence puts you at risk, stop and seek help from someone you trust or an appropriate support service.
Ask the website or platform to remove the original
Start with the service hosting the post or file. Use its report option on the content, or locate its help or support page and submit a request for non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII). Reporting procedures can differ by platform and may depend on whether you have an account. If you do not have an account, look for a public reporting route; under the U.S. Take It Down Act, covered platforms must provide an easy way for people without accounts to submit requests.

For a personal website, contact the site owner or hosting service if you can identify them. Include the precise URL, a concise explanation that the intimate image was shared without consent, and any context the service requests. Keep a copy of the request and its response. Google also recommends contacting the site owner or platform because it cannot remove material hosted outside Google products (Google’s guidance on removing explicit or intimate content).
Request removal from search results separately
After reporting the original, submit a separate request to each search service where the result appears. For Google Search and other Google services such as Drive and Photos, use Google’s NCII removal form. YouTube uses a separate reporting form, so report content there through YouTube’s own process.

Provide the specific content URLs and the relevant Search result URLs and terms requested by the form. Google says supporting screenshots or context can help it assess a request. Do not upload sexual imagery of someone under 18, or screenshots containing such imagery, through Google’s general form. For cases involving a minor, use the child-safety reporting routes below instead.

Google says it aims to review an NCII request within 48 hours. If it finds the content violates its policy, it removes it from Google services; it may also try to find future copies, but does not guarantee it will identify every copy. This review aim is not the same as the U.S. law’s removal deadline for covered platforms.

If the host has already removed the image but it still appears in Google Search, request a cache update through Google’s process. That updates what Search displays; it does not remove a file still available on the original website.
Choose the right route for your situation
| Route | What it can affect | Who it is for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host or platform report | The image or post on the service that hosts it | People reporting content on that service | The host decides whether and how to remove content under its process and applicable rules. |
| Google NCII removal form | Eligible content or results on Google services | People reporting intimate content through Google’s form | It does not delete material hosted on another website; eligibility depends on Google’s policy. |
| StopNCII | Potential matching uploads on participating platforms | Adults seeking to limit recirculation | It is not a web-wide deletion tool and does not control nonparticipating sites. |
| NCMEC Take It Down | Potential matching uploads on participating platforms | People dealing with sexual images of someone under 18 | It does not remove every copy from every website; use NCMEC’s child-safety reporting routes as appropriate. |
Use hash-matching tools to help limit reuploads
The Federal Trade Commission describes StopNCII as a free global tool operated by the Revenge Porn Helpline. It creates a digital fingerprint, or hash, from an image and shares the fingerprint—not the image—with participating platforms so they can look for matches. For minors, the FTC points to NCMEC’s Take It Down. These tools can help participating services detect matching content, but they do not themselves delete every copy across the web. Availability and results depend on the services that participate. See the FTC’s steps for responding to an image shared without consent.

This is a stated target for reviewing a report, not a promise that the image will be removed in that time.
- U.S. Take It Down Act deadline: The FTC says covered platforms must remove a reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request under the Act. This is a U.S.-law-specific requirement; it is not a universal deadline for every website or search engine.
The FTC’s Take It Down Act guidance for platforms explains the covered-platform requirement. Whether the law applies depends on the platform and request; do not assume that submitting a Google form invokes the same deadline.

Escalate threats, inaction, or cases involving minors
If a covered platform has not removed the reported material and known identical copies within the Act’s 48-hour period after a valid request, or it has no working process for requests, report the platform to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. For information about reporting a perpetrator, the FTC identifies local law enforcement and the FBI as options. For cases involving minors, it also points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline. Do not send child sexual abuse imagery to a general reporting form; follow the designated child-safety reporting instructions.
If someone is threatening, blackmailing, or stalking you, preserve relevant communications if it is safe and seek help from local law enforcement or a trusted support person. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. The available legal remedies depend on your location and the facts of the case. The FTC’s image-based abuse guidance lists support and reporting routes.
