Report the specific account or post through Instagram or Facebook’s built-in reporting flow, preserve the exact username and URL first, and describe precisely what is being impersonated or manipulated. If your own account was taken over, use account recovery instead of treating it only as an impersonation complaint. Facebook decisions can be tracked in Support Inbox, while a deepfake may receive an “AI info” label rather than being removed if it does not otherwise violate Meta’s rules.
Choose the right route before you report
The fastest path depends on where you saw the material, whether the problem concerns an entire profile or one item, and whether you can still access the real account. A single person may need more than one route: an imposter profile, a copied Reel and a message from the same operator are separate objects for reporting purposes.

Think of these as routes rather than competing products. The platform (Instagram, Facebook or Messenger), the object (profile, post, conversation or account) and your access to the genuine account determine which form is appropriate. If several copies exist, record each URL and report each materially different item.
Preserve identifiers before you submit anything
Platforms can review only what they can locate. Capture the account or item’s exact username, profile URL and, where applicable, the direct URL of the post, Reel, video, Story or message. A display name is not enough: impersonators can change it, while usernames and URLs are more useful for finding the account.

- Copy the complete profile URL and the direct content URL into a note.
- Record the username exactly, including punctuation, periods and underscores.
- Take screenshots showing the profile name, handle, profile picture, post date and the manipulated media. Keep the original files if you have them.
- Write a short factual description: who is being impersonated, what the media falsely shows or says, and the concrete harm or deception.
- Save the confirmation screen or report reference and note the date and platform used.
Do not edit screenshots in a way that removes the handle or URL. Avoid sending passwords, authentication codes or unrelated private documents in a report. Evidence helps reviewers identify the material; it does not guarantee removal or a particular enforcement decision.
Use neutral, specific language. Explain what a viewer is likely to believe, which person or organization is being represented, and whether the item fabricates a statement, endorsement, event or action. If you know the genuine account’s URL, include it when the form allows. Do not guess at technical details such as the software used to make a deepfake; describe what is visible and why it is deceptive.
How to report an impersonating account on Instagram
Report from the profile
- Open the impersonating profile in the Instagram app or on the web.
- Use the profile’s options menu (usually the three-dot button) and choose Report.
- Select the option indicating that the account is pretending to be someone else, then choose the person or entity being impersonated if Instagram presents those choices.
- Complete the questions currently shown. Include the copied username, profile link and a plain-language description when the form allows it.
- Submit the report and retain the confirmation.
Instagram’s published guidance prohibits impersonating others and asks reporters to supply useful locating information, including links, usernames and descriptions. Menu wording and available report routes can change as the app is updated, so follow the closest equivalent labels displayed on your screen rather than abandoning the report because a word is different.

If the report concerns one item rather than the whole account
Open the photo, video, Reel or Story, use its options menu, choose Report, and select the category that most accurately describes the problem. Explain that the item is manipulated or presented deceptively, identify the person being impersonated, and state why viewers could be misled or harmed. Reporting the individual item gives reviewers the exact media under dispute; reporting only the profile may leave a particular post unidentified.
If you do not have an Instagram account
Instagram’s guidance says a person without an Instagram account may still file an impersonation report. Use the current reporting form or Help Center route offered by Instagram and provide the same identifiers: the profile link, username, description of the impersonation and any requested proof. Because forms can change, rely on the fields currently presented rather than a copied set of old menu names. If the form asks for contact information, use an address you can access and check for follow-up messages.
If the profile is private or has blocked you
Do not attempt to gain access by using a deceptive account. Submit the saved profile URL through the available form, or ask a trusted person who can view the profile to preserve the public identifiers. Report a specific public copy separately if you can open it. Keep your description limited to verifiable facts rather than assumptions about who operates the account.

How to report an impersonating profile or deepfake on Facebook
Report a profile
- Open the profile that appears to be impersonating someone.
- Select the profile’s options button and choose Find support or report or the current equivalent of Report profile.
- Choose the impersonation-related reason, identify who is being impersonated, and complete the questions Facebook displays.
- Include the exact profile URL and a concise description before submitting.
Report a post, photo, video or other media item
- Open the specific post or media item.
- Use its options menu and select Report post (or the current equivalent).
- Choose the most accurate category for the deception, impersonation or other harm.
- Describe what is false or manipulated and include any relevant link or username in the available text field.
- Submit the report and keep the confirmation.
Use the item-level route when the problem is a particular deepfake. A profile report and a content report identify different objects, so submitting only one may not direct reviewers to every piece of material that matters. If a video has been reposted by several profiles, report the original-looking profile and each harmful copy you can identify.

When the form offers several categories
Choose the category that best describes the actual violation shown, rather than selecting the most dramatic label. State that the content impersonates a named person or organization and explain the false impression it creates. If the item also involves threats, fraud or another immediate safety issue, describe that conduct in the factual explanation and preserve the relevant messages.
Check a Facebook decision and request another review
Facebook says report notifications and decisions can be checked in Support Inbox. In the current interface, look under the Facebook menu for Help & support, then Support Inbox; labels can vary by app version, account and device.
- Open Facebook and go to the menu.
- Choose Help & support, then Support Inbox (or the equivalent label shown).
- Open the report notification to see Facebook’s decision and any explanation provided.
- If that message offers Request another review or similar wording, select it and follow the prompts.
Meta’s Help Center says an available additional review is usually completed within 24 hours after the request. That estimate applies to the additional-review route described there, not to every initial impersonation or deepfake report. No general initial-response deadline is established in the guidance.
Read the decision carefully before submitting anything else. A decision about a profile does not necessarily decide a separate post, and a decision that leaves content online may reflect a labeling or context action rather than a finding that every detail is authentic. If an eligible second review is offered, explain briefly what the first decision missed and point to the exact URL or rule-relevant fact.

- Open the Messenger conversation.
- Tap or click the conversation name to open Privacy & support.
- Choose Report.
- Select the option for someone pretending to be someone else and complete the remaining prompts.
The Messenger instructions send impersonation cases to Facebook’s Help Center process. Save the conversation URL or screenshots, the account handle and the date before reporting. If the conversation includes threats or an immediate safety concern, preserve the messages and use the urgent assistance available in your region as well as the platform report. Do not click unfamiliar links or send money while deciding how to report.

What Meta’s deepfake policy means in practice
Reporting a deepfake does not itself guarantee that Instagram or Facebook will delete it. In an announcement dated April 5, 2024 and updated July 1, 2024, Meta described adding AI info labels to broader categories of image, video and audio content when it detects industry-standard indicators of AI generation or when an uploader discloses that the content was made with AI.
Meta also said it would keep manipulated content that does not otherwise violate its Community Standards so it could add labels and context. As Meta Vice President of Content Policy Monika Bickert wrote: “We agree with the Oversight Board’s recommendation that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address manipulated media and avoid the risk of unnecessarily restricting freedom of speech, so we’ll keep this content on our platforms so we can add labels and context.”
Therefore, describe both the manipulation and the harm when you report. State what viewers are likely to believe, identify the real person or organization being imitated, and explain whether the item falsely depicts an action, statement, endorsement or event. A label can warn viewers without removing the media; removal depends on the applicable Community Standards and the facts reviewers find. Do not promise friends or clients that a report will produce deletion, and do not treat the absence of a label as proof that a video is genuine.
If your real account was hacked, recover it separately
An account takeover is different from an unrelated imposter profile. If someone changed your password, email address, phone number or authentication settings, start Facebook’s recovery flow at facebook.com/hacked. Facebook recommends using a device that was previously used to log in, because that can help it recognize the account.
After access is restored, review the account’s email address, phone number, active sessions, password and two-factor authentication settings. Remove changes you did not make and warn contacts about messages or posts sent during the takeover. If an attacker also created a separate profile pretending to be you, report that profile after securing the genuine account. The same principle applies on Instagram: use its account-recovery options for loss of access, not only the impersonation form.
Use the new in-app support assistant when it is available
Meta announced in March 2026 that an in-app AI support assistant is rolling out for support topics that include reporting impersonation and problematic content. Availability can vary during the rollout, by account and by region. If the assistant appears in your app, use it to locate the current reporting route or explain a decision, but submit the report through the official form it opens and keep your confirmation. Its presence does not change the need to provide accurate URLs, usernames and descriptions, and it is not a substitute for hacked-account recovery.

Meta Verified is optional, not a reporting requirement
Meta describes Meta Verified as a paid subscription that can include impersonation protection and enhanced support, subject to eligibility and availability. It is not stated to be necessary to file a report, does not guarantee that content will be removed, and does not replace the standard report and hacked-account recovery flows. You do not need to buy a subscription, security key, password manager or deepfake-detection product to submit the platform report.

What to expect after submitting
Platforms review the material under their current rules and may remove it, leave it in place, add context or take another action. The available guidance does not provide a universal removal rate or a guaranteed time for an initial report. Keep checking the relevant account or item and, for Facebook, Support Inbox. If the situation changes, report the new URL or newly posted copy as its own item rather than assuming an earlier report covers it.
Tell people who may have been deceived how to verify the genuine account, but avoid amplifying the fake by reposting it unnecessarily. If the content involves financial fraud, threats or identity theft, preserve the evidence and consider contacting the relevant local authorities or service provider in addition to using Meta’s report flow.

Can I report Instagram impersonation without an Instagram account?
Instagram’s guidance says people without an account may still file an impersonation report through the current form or Help Center route. Provide the profile link, username, description and any requested information shown by the form.
Should I report the profile or the deepfake post?
Report the object that needs review. Use a profile report for an account pretending to be someone and an item-level report for a particular photo, video, Reel, Story or Facebook post. If both are involved, report both and preserve each URL.
Is Meta Verified required to report impersonation?
