If money has been taken through an online scam, call India’s cyber financial fraud helpline at 1930 promptly, contact your bank or payment provider, and file a complaint at the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. You can also use the portal for other cybercrimes. Save your acknowledgement number to track the complaint; a report does not guarantee that funds will be recovered.
How do I report cyber fraud in India?
Choose the route that matches the incident. For a financial cyber fraud, make the phone report and online complaint, while notifying the payment provider in parallel. For another cybercrime, submit it through the appropriate portal category. If someone faces an immediate physical threat, contact local police or emergency services rather than relying on the cybercrime portal.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Money taken or an unauthorized online payment | Call 1930 promptly, notify the bank, wallet or payment provider, then file online at cybercrime.gov.in. |
| Cybercrime not involving a payment | File at the portal under the applicable “Report Other Cybercrimes” category. |
| Immediate physical danger or a matter outside cybercrime | Contact local police or emergency services; the portal filing page lists 112 for national police assistance. See the portal’s filing instructions. |
What should I do first after a financial cyber fraud?
Call 1930 as soon as possible
India’s government identifies 1930 as the cyber financial fraud helpline. Report promptly: early reporting may help authorities and financial institutions coordinate to try to stop funds from moving, but a call does not guarantee a freeze or recovery.

If an account, card, UPI-linked account or wallet was used without your authorization, contact the provider immediately. Ask it to secure or block affected payment access and give you a service complaint or reference number. RBI directions say banks, after receiving a report of an unauthorized transaction, must take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorized transactions. Customer liability depends on the circumstances and reporting delay, so this does not mean every victim automatically receives a refund. Read the RBI circular dated July 6, 2017.

File the online complaint
Go to cybercrime.gov.in and choose the applicable “Report Other Cybercrimes” option for online financial fraud. The portal’s report-and-track process requires registration with a name and valid Indian mobile number. Follow the current on-screen instructions, which may change. The portal FAQ explains its process.
How do I file a cyber crime complaint online?
- Open the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and choose the reporting option and category that match the incident.
- Register or sign in as prompted for the report-and-track process, using your name and valid Indian mobile number.
- Enter the incident date and time and describe what happened factually. The current complainant checklist specifies a description of at least 200 characters and warns against certain special characters; follow the live form’s validation rules.
- For financial fraud, provide the bank, wallet or merchant name, 12-digit transaction ID or UTR, transaction date and fraud amount. Add relevant suspect details and evidence files if available.
- Review the details for accuracy, submit the complaint and save the acknowledgement number and any confirmation message.
- Use the acknowledgement number to check the complaint status on the portal. The complaint is handled by the concerned State or Union Territory police authorities.
The portal checklist asks for a soft copy of an accepted national identity document in JPEG, JPG or PNG format, with a stated maximum size of 5 MB. It states a maximum of 10 MB per evidence file. Requirements and limits can change, so check the form at the time you submit. See the official complainant checklist and the Government Services Portal listing.

What evidence should I keep for a cyber fraud complaint?
Preserve original records where possible and make copies that show dates, amounts, account or transaction identifiers, web addresses, sender information and relevant conversation context. The NCRP FAQ lists examples including:
- Bank statements, credit-card receipts and online money-transfer receipts.
- Emails, chat transcripts, webpage URLs and screenshots showing a suspect mobile number.
- Envelopes for received mail or courier, brochures or pamphlets, and relevant videos, images or other documents.
- Suspect details, if known: website or social-media account, phone number, email, bank account, address or photograph.
Avoid deleting messages, resetting devices, editing screenshots or forwarding suspicious links to other people. These are practical preservation steps; the portal lists evidence types but does not prescribe a forensic procedure. You do not need to buy a phone or computer to file: use the records and device access already available. See the NCRP FAQ’s evidence guidance.

How can I check my cyber crime complaint status?
Return to the portal and use the acknowledgement number to check status. Keep the acknowledgement and the bank or provider’s separate reference number; they relate to different reports. The concerned State/UT police authority handles the complaint. If you believe a Report and Track response is inappropriate, the portal publishes State/UT nodal and grievance officer contacts: State/UT nodal and grievance contacts.

A portal submission starts a complaint process; it is not an assurance that an FIR will be registered, an investigation will reach a particular result, or money will be returned. The Ministry of Home Affairs says investigation, any conversion to an FIR and subsequent action are handled by the concerned State/UT law-enforcement agencies under law. Its July 28, 2026 release reported that the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System had saved more than ₹11,158 crore across more than 32.80 lakh complaints through June 30, 2026. Those are cumulative system figures, not a prediction of what an individual complainant will recover. Read the Ministry’s release.

The same release explains that “Police” and “Public Order” are State subjects under India’s Constitution, which is why State/UT agencies handle complaints. If you report a financial fraud to 1930, follow the acknowledgement SMS and current portal instructions. An older official handout applies specifically to Delhi and says to complete the online complaint within 24 hours; that should not be treated as a confirmed nationwide deadline. Read the Delhi-specific handout.
Provide accurate information and distinguish what you know from what is unknown; do not guess a suspect’s identity or transaction details. The portal FAQ warns that false information can have legal consequences. Check the portal FAQ.
