Before reporting an impersonation account, save its profile URL and handle, links to relevant posts or messages, and a brief record of what happened and when. Then use the platform’s official impersonation reporting route. If the account is making threats, committing fraud, stalking someone, or creating immediate danger, contact the appropriate local authorities as well; a platform report is not a substitute for emergency help or an official request to preserve account records.
What evidence should you save before reporting a fake account?
Make a concise, factual record of the account and its activity. URLs help identify material, but a reviewer may not be able to open content that is private or restricted. The Singapore Online Safety Commission advises describing who was involved, what happened, how the material was shared, which platforms were involved, and the dates and times. It recommends saving the URL when possible; screenshots, photos, or recordings can help when a URL is unavailable. For restricted material, provide screenshots as well as the link. - Account identifiers: The direct profile URL, handle, displayed name, profile-image description, and any public account identifier shown.
- Relevant content: Direct URLs to impersonating posts, messages, comments, or other material. If you cannot get a direct URL, note where it appears in the app.
- Context: Screenshots or screen recordings that show enough of the account and behavior to identify what happened. Include visible dates and times where available.
- Timeline: When you found the account, what it did, whom it contacted, when you reported it, and later changes such as a changed handle.
- Impact and follow-up: Affected people or accounts, any requests for money or contact, and report confirmations or case numbers.
South Wales Police also recommends capturing relevant profile, post, message, and interaction evidence, then using the platform’s own reporting tools. Its guidance advises alerting people who might engage with the fake account, watching for new accounts, and reviewing security settings. This is UK police guidance, not a universal legal process. How do you report an impersonation account?
- Check the account through a trusted route. If you are unsure whether an account is genuine, verify through a contact method you already trust—not by replying to the suspicious profile or clicking its links. A discernible parody may be treated differently under particular rules; for example, a U.S. Department of State policy excerpt distinguishes discernible parody from impersonation for its staff policy. - Save identifiers and relevant material. Copy the profile and content URLs, note the handle and timestamps, and capture limited screenshots if useful. Do this before reporting if content may change or disappear, but do not delay an urgent safety report to assemble a perfect record.
- Use the platform’s official reporting route. Choose the closest option for impersonation or pretending to be someone. On X, the targeted person or an authorized representative can report through the Help Center; a bystander can report from the profile, and an X account is not required. - Describe observable facts. Identify the person or organization being impersonated, the exact account or posts involved, and what the account did that could mislead people. Avoid guessing who operates it or claiming a crime occurred unless you have evidence for that claim.
- Keep the confirmation and watch for changes. Save the confirmation or reference number, note any changed handle or replacement account, and send follow-up details through the official route. Warn likely targets using a channel you trust.
- Escalate serious harm locally. For threats, stalking, fraud, financial loss, or other serious harms, use the relevant local police or regulator channel. For immediate danger, contact emergency services. These processes depend on location and the type of harm; you do not need to wait for the platform to act before seeking urgent help.
How can you preserve evidence without creating more risk?
Keep only what is relevant, store it somewhere private that you control, and limit access to people helping with the report. Avoid reposting the content publicly: doing so can amplify the impersonation or expose personal information. If an authentic copy matters, keep the original capture unchanged; make a separate cropped or annotated copy for working notes rather than overwriting it.

Handle sexual material with particular care. UK police guidance says a person reporting sextortion does not have to collect screenshots before contacting police, though details can help build a timeline. If you are uncertain whether everyone in a sexual image or video is 18 or older, do not screenshot, record, or share it—even with police. Platform report or law enforcement report: which route should you use?
These routes serve different purposes and can be used together. A platform report asks a service to review an account or content under its rules. A report to police or a regulator seeks investigation or other official intervention under the processes that apply in your location.

Does a platform report preserve account records?
No. A user’s content or impersonation report is not the same as a law-enforcement request for nonpublic account records. X says it may preserve a temporary snapshot of relevant account records for 90 days after receiving an appropriate law-enforcement preservation request, pending valid legal process. Meta describes a 90-day preservation step for account records connected to official criminal investigations, pending formal legal process, and says it does not retain data for law-enforcement purposes unless a valid preservation request arrives before content is deleted. These are authority-facing procedures, not a user guarantee, report-review deadline, or assurance that every account’s records will be available. The cited official material does not establish a universal platform duty to retain impersonation evidence or a user right to compel preservation. The 90-day periods apply only to the described X and Meta procedures.
